Saratoga Sunroof - Bulk-Buy

IIRC if you look back on ?Rennlist about Saratoga Sunroofs a few years back there were problems with the fixings and Pilkingtons had to do a modification - but my memory may not be all it used to be!:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

that doesn't look good..can't really tell from the photo but to me it looks a simple turning job, if I had one of these roof's I think I'd have a look at making the things myself...they look aluminium but guess they aren't as that wouldn't break...are they something stupid like 'white metal' castings or such??

Hhhhhmmmm! They haven't exactly showered themselves in glory over this project have they? Some jobs in manufacturing seem to become a Cluster Chuck (or something like that) with prolems cascading for no apparent reason.

I hope you don't end up waiting as long for your replacement fixing kits as it would be a brave man to actually drive with the current ones by the looks of it. [:(]

I'm inclined, using this as a justification, to cancel my order (since I haven't received any collection notification yet). Yet another "failure" is more than I think is reasonable at the end of this whole, protracted process, and I really don't want to get into "returns and repairs".

If they decline, I will file a dispute with my credit card company. I'm now quite relieved that I decided to pay with the CC rather than some other mechanism.

Yes: for anyone who hasn't yet paid it is, sad to say, probably a good idea to pay by credit card, in case of problems.

Not the best start ....

Well ... despite some misgiving, I have jumped in and made payment.

And I sent this to Karen, copied to Nick:

" I mentioned to you my, and others’, great concern that apparently the sunroof fixings broke the first time that a PCGB member tried to fit their new Saratoga sunroof.

It was my understanding that this used to happen; but that as a result, Pilkington had changed and redesigned the fixings.

In which case, this should not have happened ?

You said that Nick is looking into this and we all look forward to clarification of the position from him as soon as possible. "

And Nick has come back encouragingly promptly and said he is looking into it.

Excuse my French but....oh FFS! []

I've just had a call saying mine is ready to pick up and now have a slightly sick feeling in my stomach.

Mine is at home, but sadly I am in Lincoln till Friday, hope the broken one is just a one off and speedily rectified,

Yet to hear that mine is available for collection but I am a little concerned by this latest turn of events.

I'll watch this thread closely.

Oli.

I've also not been informed yet that mine is ready for collection.

But in any event I'll hold on that until above issue is understood - and any rectification is in place.

Mine arrived this morning from Glasgow, not home and won't be able to fit until Saturday, my good lady opened the box and on the face of it all is well, won't know until fitted if any problems with buttons, will keep in touch.

Dave S

I have not had notification yet that mine is ready for collection either, I'm glad I chose to make my payment via CC. I think I wont hurry to pick it up until we hear more about this failure.

Suggestion.

Someone who is collecting from a Pilkingtons depot, take your car to collect it, ask the manager to come to the car park with you and assist/witness while you remove the sunroof panel and (attempt to) fit the Saratoga - with a photo record. Then Nick can get a report from a Pilks manager of what happens.

Has Nick now spoken to you, John ?

He said he would and I hope he has.

Hoping there is progress ....

Same issue here. Picked up today. The roof looks great but fixings are rubbish. Broke one and didn't even try the other.

Sounds like the "unicorn" may actually be a donkey wearing a cardboard dunce's cap.

I suspect the catches have been fitted incorrectly in the factory. Reading part of the (extremely long) Rennlist thread, there seems to be some scope for tightness adjustment just like you can with the factory roof (presumably to allow for roof fitting variation and seal compression over time). If they're at their maximum tightness setting and you fit it with new seals I can see it putting too much strain on the fitting, particularly if they're not too strong to start off with.

hmm... doesn't sound good, if another has broken when trying to fit then clearly they are not robust enough for the job in hand. I hear what Glen says but even if over tight they shouldn't break this easily, I certainly wouldn't drive with the roof open using these catches...hell I wouldn't fit the roof at all until this is sorted, last thing you want is the car getting damaged by a flying roof panel at speed....:(
