Sat Nav/TMC

Hi Guys, apparantly, according to Luke, Porsche Cars GB Customer Relations (after consultation with the 997 project manager) have stated that UK TMC will not be retrofitted to MY 05, but we should be able to update at our cost. Not good news.

Hi

I'm getting slightly confused by this TMC thing. I've just taken delivery of my 997s and the TMC function appears to be working in that the map often contains 'men at work' symbols and lots of blue triangles on the road which I think represents congestion. As the car is so new I haven't had chance to fully read the manual yet so I'm maybe mis-reading or understanding what is being displayed! could it be that the system is now working though?

People have reported it works in Europe, so I'm VERY confused that there is any "retrofitting" required. Surely it is simply a licencing issue?

I have a Kenwood SatNav and was told that TMC decode for any particular country is within the DVD. So any retrofitting would only involve obtaining a later DVD. The TMC receiver is the same for all countries. So assuming it is built-in to your unit (ie received German or other country TMC info) it should work

So what is involved: a hardware and / or software update to our PCM systems - or just a new DVD? And at what cost?

The SAT/NAV was a £1200 option! TMC was a listed capability, so as far as I'm concerned I have already paid. If a new DVD is required, which can be as much as £120 from Navteq, I will expect the OPC to be free issuing. Otherwise they best take cover.

I have to say I agree It is unreal that we pay £1200 for an option with TMC, then are told that if we want what we originally paid for we will have to pay extra, sorry Mr. Customer we just wanted some more of your money!!

Apparantly there is a disclaimer on the Porsche web site stating that they can change products at any time. Moreover, according to their legal department they are not obliged to supply us with an updated DVD to enable TMC to work. I'll see what we as a Club can do to twist a few arms.

Derek,

Thanks for your efforts on this so far.

May I confirm that no change is required to the hardware or software embedded within the PCM system and only an updated DVD is required?

If all that is required is a new DVD then I'm sure that most of us would be grateful for a preferential purchase price!

Porsche Customer service advised that the April disc only highlights traffic hot spots it doesn't re-route. I presume that's what the hardware update is all about.

The most disapointing thing is that Porsche doesn't seem to acknowledge a moral responsibility and is happy to hide behind legal disclaimers. Very disapointing[&o]

Coolbox.

Extremely disappointed to hear this. I too concur with "we've already paid for it" point of view. When I ordered mine, I was told that the glossy booklets to promote the car are standard issue however the price list is the real spec of the UK car. This states TMC as a feature, and what I paid for![]
They should not be allowed to get away with it! []

Hi Guys,

I am putting polite pressure on PGB through the Board of PCGB. That's all I am allowed to do as a Register Secretary as we are not allowed to approach PGB direct. What we do personally as owners is another thing all together. People power will eventually win when sales dip!

Derek,

Thanks. This will be an interesting test of the relationship that I think we all hope will develop profitably and beneficially between the Club and Porsche GB!

I remain disappointed about the TMC issue and also the MP3 also.

I have just returned from a 2 week trip to South of France and was not aware that the TMC was working on my system. However the French motorways are heaven compared with our motorways ( also French drivers by and large have very much better lane discipline although they have a tendency to tail-gate)

I'm disappointed at their attitude here. I thought we had this sorted at the visit to Reading back in April. As far as I'm aware the DVD upgrade is of the order of £450 plus VAT, available in August. That's a significant price to buy an accurate road-map and TMC which we all thought we had in the first place. Given all the niggly little problems we've had with our 70k sports cars, and the fact that sales and profit have soared for Porsche in the last results, I do think there ought to be some solution offered to club members by PGB. How many cars are affected in the club I wonder ? If we could get an idea of the number, maybe we can go back to them with a plea bargain for the complementary upgrade, or at least some group discount ?

I'm happy to buld a database of affected users, please everyone e-mail me at 997@porscheclubgb.com
with your name, model, registration number and supplying dealer...

A freind of mine has just taken delivery of 997S and TMC is working very nicely thank you. I tried his DVD in my car and guess what? PCM reports "non compatible DVD inserted". So no quick fix there then.
I suspect that earlyer cars simply do not have TMC capability at all, irrespective of which country your in. I would be pleased to hear the contrary from anybody using it sucessfully in Europe.
Meanwhile I shall be making loud noises to supplying OPC, who said it would work later when licence issue resolved, with no mention of further costs.
