Sat Nav/TMC

Sorry to ask a naive question - but I will anyway...

How come the OPCs are keen to 'mark-up' the price of cars fitted with the OEM Sat Nav system, and quick to point out that a car without said system is worth less come trade in, when the thing doesn't work anyway?

The OPC isn't going to pay the retail price of £400 I have been quoted to get the system sorted out.

I am taking delivery of a C2S in March and read with interest the concern over poor phone performance and post sale customer service. My current thinking is that I will not pay the final invoice until the phone can be proven to work.

What tests do I need to do to satisfy myself it is ok ?
Presumably I will need to test the phone with background noise and for this will need to drive the car. Could be a Catch22 situation.

I suspect that the OPC would take the line of:- No pay - No drive!
Never mind Catch 22 - it's Hobsons Choice! You want the car - you pay! This will be a test of the after sales staff!

Michael,

I too have had the upgrade; the postcode search functions - but it's not obvious! Enter the first 5 letters/figures of a postcode into the first line of an address; the rest will become obvious. Also, don't forget to select dynamic routing for the TMC function to be of benefit.

How does the PCM compare with tomtom and AVIC? I was thinking of getting the new AVIC Z1 with the built in HD, upgraded Ipod support etc for my 987s

I'm sorry Adrian this all relates to the DVD PCM. As far as I know there's no upgrade for the earlier CD version.

Hello chaps,

I've just had my 996 valeted and the muppets have scratched the screen of my PCM unit.

After a bit of a fight they have agreed to claim on their insurance for a replacement. I rang AFN in Guildford today to find out if I can take the opportunity to upgrade from my CD based PCM to the DVD model.

However they said this wouldn't be possible because the 996 didn't have the Optical cables that the later 997 has-but I'm a bit confused by this, as only a few months ago they quoted me about £1200 to fit a CD changer, their explanation being that it was so expensive due to it being connected optically.

I therefore guess that what I need to know is:

How do I know if my PCM is the Optically connected Version?

If it is, can I therefore replace it with the DVD based system, and hopefully get TMC working?

(I have to say, that whilst I am absolutely loving my first foray into 911 ownership, I am a little surprised at how little my local dealership seems to know when it comes to techncal matters....I have always had BMWs up until now, and their customer service is excellent; in fact I would go as far as saying that Vines in Guildford provides absolutley EXCEPTIONAL customer service!)

Anyway, any help anyone could offer would be really appreciated.

Cheers

Nick

Latest update - I've just had a call from Geoff Turrell at Porsche this morning. They're going to come back to early next week with their position on the TMC, age of maps, and the phone issues. Broadly, their thinking is on the lines of TMC - should it have been offered, are they technically/legally obliged to make it work in the UK as it does work overseas and hence it is fitted, maps - an issue with the feed from their supplier and a new release has been ordered, phone - calibration down to a very fine level must be performed - I think Derek Sharp posted on this some time ago - it's not a simple task !

I think this marks the first formal acknowledgement of our concerns, and they understand there are a number of customers whom I'm representing.

I'll keep you posted as soon as I hear.

That sounds hopeful.

But, what happens to 987/997 owners who shelled out for the TMC upgrade at their OPCs on the understanding that Porsche would not be providing it?

Oliver, why have you dug this out ? I think that post is nearly a year old, and as we know, they wouldn't upgrade the navigation to include TMC. Which is why I ran a cost-price upgrade-offer over the winter.

To Nick with your 996, you have absolutely no chance of upgrading your 996 with a DVD driven PCM unit from a 997 I'm afraid. The TMC software is on the navigation discs, and given the 997 discs is 3 years out of date I doubt there's a TMC-enabled upgrade for the 996 which uses CD-ROMs.

Sorry, completely my error.

Nick's post threw up your reply and I didn't check the date.

Anyway, I've had the update and it works fine.

Anyone know when the next disc update is due?

My guess is never. Porsche will probably "upgrade" the system to PCM2.2 or something and simply abandon all support to earlier versions as with PCM1.[]

Thanks Oliver.

Geoff I think you're right, they've probably no need to upgrade the mapping so they probably won't bother. Before, the discs were dated April and August, so we're probably due a release, but even so it wouldn't be available before November...

The dates on the discs DO NOT refer to the release date of the mapping database from Navteq. As far as I can tell the date on the disc is the only thing that is changing, apart from the TMC and so called post-code search facility, which was added April 2005. The current mapping seems still to be 2003, which I concluded by playing with a brand new Cayman S.
