Sat Nav/TMC

You may be right, however there are a couple of threads on 'Rennteam' that wouldn't support your view; at least two US 997 owners have had their PCM2 units corrupted. Fortuitously, one had the wrong disc supplied by his dealer - so the dealer is replacing not only the disc but also the PCM unit!

John,

Any possibility you can share the name and or contact details of the OPC that resolved your TMC?

James

Wow, I stand corrected on the corruption question. So this means the PCM system has a very poor fundamental design. ie you can insert something that will cause a catastrophic, unrecoverable failure to the system.

Fortunately they are great at making chassis and engine :)

I test drove a Toyota Prius hybrid recently and they have clearly taken a lot of time over the in car system, what with the sat nav, perfect bluetooth, eveything integrates well as far as I could see. PCM seems to bolt together all the seperate components, but hardly in a modular and seamless way

The Prius is light years ahead in that department. It has touch-screen as well, which makes a world of difference. The Prius doesn't look as good, or drive as well tho ! [:D][:D]

Right! And street cred drops to rock bottom. Unlike a 911 where the issue there is fighting off all the beeping, cutting up, and other general light forms of abuse...just cos its a 911. I got a lot more driver respect driving my Boxter S

Just bumping this back to the top in the hope that the Club has some news for all of us affected by this debacle.

Latest news is that my OPC (Swindon) has not got the updated DVDs nor software yet! Other than that I have not news. This does not look good and I'm off to collect my teddies that have been thrown out of the cot!

Derek,

Thanks for your prompt reply. I know that you are doing your best for us all - but I'm getting frustrated that the 'bond' between the Club and Porsche GB is not being exploited fully by the Directors. If they cannot empower you to act on their behalf and represent the views of the Club members affected by this issue then they need to be seen to be doing something positive and overt themselves!

Thanks once again for your efforts.

Derek

At the risk of being seen as a dog with a bone, I'm not going to let this one lie! It is disappointing, if not downright unacceptable, that 'our' directors have not felt it appropriate to record what, if anything, the Club is going to do on our behalf. Derek is not empowered to act and deal with Porsche GB - but surely the Club hierarchy are? Much is made of the relationship that the Club has with Porsche GB so it would be beneficial to all concerned if some tangible proof could be forthcoming in the guise of a timely resolution to the PCM 2 TMC farce! I understand that Brands Hatch is looming and that the directors may feel that their priorities should lie elsewhere; I disagree!

Once again, no criticism of Derek.

You are not alone in questioning the abilities of the directors of PCGB. Their inactivity on such a core issue speaks volumes for where their priorities truly lie.

Not so much, in acting as a force for the good of all PCGB members (isn't that what they are supposed to be doing?), rather a select cliche who savour each other's company whilst enjoying some form of reflected glory for their status in PCGB.

To stand as a director you need to have been a Regional / Register Organiser - whatever happened to getting the right man (or woman) for the job. EG, the finance director (I do not know the current emcumbent or his / her skill base) should be a qualified accountant, or other person with suitable work experience and relevant qualifications. Having been an RO or similar means having a knowledge of the inner workings of PCGB but not neccesarily anything more, or better, or more qualified to act as a board director - except that they know you already!

No wonder Lazza found a reason to leave quite soon after being co-opted !! (I do not know his true reasons BTW).

I believe it is about time the PCGB board stood up to be counted and got their act together by proving their worth by getting Porsche Cars GB to take this matter seriously and address this issue once and for all.

This is a customer relations matter which could also be construed as a trading standards one as well.

No doubt silence will ensue and the board will savour their prawn sandwiches in the special centre at Brands, sucking up to the importer and saying nothing about this issue.

How, I would like to be proved wrong!

I think you're wrong on this - as far as I know even the Chairman has never held a Regional Organiser position. And wasn't Helen the RO not Lazza? Robin Duckett was the finance director and I'm sure he is a qualified accountant.
I don't know if any of the Directors own a 997 - this might make the issue be a bit more focused certainly in that directors mind. I'm sure though Derek as the Register Sec, will make our collective feelings known through the appropriate channels.

Sorry Graham, I should have prefaced my comments with;

'According to a recent edition of PP wherein the board asked for nominations for two vacant directors posts, apparently the qualifying criteria to stand as a director are currently;................'

Hope this clairifies my comments, it was not my own understanding but that put forward in the article. To be fair the article may not have made this a pre-condition, but it was suggested strongly that anyone without such experience should not bother putting themselves forward.

Hi Guys,

I am doing the best I can for you guys with TMC (incl Boxster), but I am particularly frustrated that I am achieving nothing. Our Chairman has assured me that he has forwarded my e-mail to PGB, but personally I agree with all that has been said, the Board need to do more and need to be seen to do more. My loyalty has always been with the members and will remain there. All that said, do please watch what you say and stick closely to the facts! This is an emotive issue and I appreciate and share your concerns. Free speech is something we cherish on this forum but we must be correct in what we say.

Good God, what a load of old wives you lot are!

If one man could get a free April 05 disc and his TMC enabled by his local OPC then the clout of this board should be able to achieve so much more than a mere mortal such as I.

I really think the membership need to something about the apparent apathetic attitude of the directors; they clearly need direction, and they need it now. All said without prejudice.

Reason why updated Sat Nav + TMC will be very handful!!! ;-)

Sorry, impossible to resist. ;-)

Thanks!

Dear All,

After 2 x 996 (3.4 Coupe, 3.6 Cabriolet), I plan to buy a 997S. I don't know about you but the Porsche Cars UK + OPCs outcomes will make a big difference. Should I stay with Porsche or should I go...

Anyway, next time I see the OPC Reading Dealer Principal I'll try to get answers.

Thanks for all your efforts!

Fab

And the response from OUR directors is.......nothing: no comment, no action - nothing! I can only assume that they either have no access to our/their website and its forum - or they don't care! Come on directors - your membership deserve better than this; show us that you are willing to represent our views - and demonstrate to the 'rank and file' Club members the value of the Club's relationship with Porsche GB.

Delbox

Are we (us, not just you) being a little naive here?

Do we believe that the moderator of this thread is actually alerting the directors to it and suggesting that they provide an answer?

Do they care - see my earlier post - are they really bothered about the 'masses' or rather their cosy relationship with the powers that be in motorsport, (I once had reason to speak with DN - I thought PP had too many pictures of him in it - yes he took time out to speak to me, but just had to drop into the conversation the fact that he was calling from Brands and had to go to talk with Jonathan Palmer about the 2005 festival arrangements) celebrity circles, special inside freebies (I did not see a figure mentioned that JM paid for his lesson with Aubrey for example), etc etc. Free publicity for Aubrey's course I guess. (And yes I did see that we can get a £75 discount - but off what gross figure - not mentioned).

Perhaps you wish to send an email to ALL the board at their email addresses at Cornbury House directing them to this thead? If you send to them all in one go, perhaps one of them may have the gumption to actually take a little time to see what the problem is and, and what? do something about it? Shock!

Did we think that we had a board of professionals running the club, or a group of people looking after their own self interests.

Derek tells us that DN has promised to act, and as you say, we have heard nothing of what he proposes to do, who he intends to raise this with, etc. Perhaps he is hoping it will die down and go away !!

I guess he has either solved his own problems with his personal contacts (good for Porsche GB) or doesn't use the TMC function on his PCM.

dypoyton's comments are not strictly correct or fair. Whilst I agree with some of his points, those refering to me are inaccurate. So let me fill you in (sorry about the pun [:D]):

1. I have contacted David Newton by phone and by e-mail on many occasions. I have appraised the Board (thro DN and the Register Director RW) of the full situation. Moreover, I have invited them to view in detail the content of this Forum.

2. Due to the strength of feeling I have suggested that out Chairman not only discusses this on our behalf with PGB, but importantly be seen to be doing so. I have invited him to post a note here to explain just what the Board is doing. He has declined, but stated that he had forwarded one of my e-mails to PGB.

3. My TMC still does not work []. Moreover, I suspect that PGB would not be too inclined to grant me any special favours as it was I who started this tread. My own OPC, who are very helpful, have told me that as yet they do not have any upgraded discs or new software. Thus they have not solved this problem for me.

4. There is a PCGB Board meeting every month. By all means contact DN and request a meeting with the Board. I would attend.

5 I have stated that my loyalties lie only with the 997 Register. If the majority are not happy with my stewardship, then of course I would resign. Perhaps dyponton would like to purchase a 997 and take over [:)]

6 Apologies will now be accepted from dpoynton [:D]

Derek

Email (and forums such as this) can be dangerous. Inflection and meaning can easily be lost and misintepretion and unintentioned hurt can be caused. [&o][]

My comments were not meant to be a criticism of you, or your role in this matter in any way. I have no reason to doubt your allegiance to the 997 register, your handling of 997 register events or your support for PCGB.

If to avoid you taking offence I could have worded my post in a better way, for that I do apologise, unreservedly. When I said, 'do they care?', I meant the board, not you, you are clearly concerned otherwise you would not have started (and continued) this thread.

You have now provided more background information which I (and others) was / were not aware of, and I appreciate that this could be a delicate matter in some respects. The additional information is welcomed.

I hope this reassures you that I was not attacking you / your role in any way.

Please feel free to email me directly through my profile if you believe this post does not resolve matters satisfactorily for you.

Regards
David

I will not be buying a 997!
