Sat Nav/TMC

Derek,

As ever, thank you for your most prompt and comprehensive response. It is clear to me that you are doing all in your power to seek a resolution to the TMC issue; however, it is equally apparent that your efforts are not mirrored by David Newton or the Board. Given the obvious strength of feeling, it is appalling that Mr Newton has chosen not to address the members that he represents through this open forum; that speaks volumes for the Board's - and his personal - priorities. I joined the Club as I was led to believe that not only was it recognised as one of the most professionally organised and run but also it had a formal relationship with Porsche; consequently, I had expected its Deirectors to be interested in major issues affecting the membership - and strive to resolve them. Unfortunately, through Porsche Post and this forum, it is becoming obvious that the Chairman and his Directors are more concerned with the external face of the Club rather than repesenting the views of the membership. Come on Mr Newton, as our Chairman you owe it to us to detail what you and the board are doing on our behalf to resolve the long-standing TMC issue. Copying one of Derek's e-mails to Porsche GB is just not good enough; what meetings have you had with the appropriate company representatives? If my message appears emotive then perhaps it is; however, it is not meant to be offensive - just represent the frustration experienced by many, if not all, 997 and 987 owners with non-TMC enabled PCM2 fitted to their cars

Derek

Hi Derek,

I've got a couple of dozen names on the database now of people who contacted me to register their Nav/TMC issues. I'll contact DN now and ask for a meeting with the board as you suggest, and perhaps when I've got a date you and I can put a case together. I'm sure we'll be well supported by our fellow owners in this thread.

All - will update when I've made contact.

Robert,

You may wish to publicise this issue on the Boxster area of the Forum - given that the 987 has the same PCM as the 997.

Derek

HI Derek, Thanks for the advice, I've no idea on how to paste links to threads, but as soon as I've got a date I'll put a note out on the Boxster and Cayenne forums too. I've got some 987 owners on my database from when I did this before.

Just to let Boxster owners know I put this in next month PP article when I submitted it for publication a couple of weeks ago...

All - an update.

I have called and written to DN asking for a slot at the next board meeting. The note outlined the problems and the request to:
1. Formally acknolwedge the issues with the system and the problems us members are having.
2. Agree to unite and represent members interests
3. Agree and implement an action plan for a united approach to PGB for a resolution plan for each member.

I have spoken to our chairman this evening. Not entirely sure he can help as I have requested above.

However, I have agreed:

DN to contact PGB on the basis of my e-mail and evidence.
Myself (and anyone of you who would like to support me) to meet DN on the Monday of the Porsche Festival
Myself (and DS ?) to make our representation at the October board meeting - an earlier slot is not yet available.

I have more than a dozen names on the database of cars with problems. However, it is IMPORTANT that you contact me ASAP to include your car if you haven't already. I need your name, model, registration, and supplying OPC please.

Contact me at robert.prince@bt.com or 07802 451 253.

Mark Bennett / Delbox, please could you post this on the Boxster and Cayenne forums for me ?

Thanks

Rob

Maybe I've missed something here? I've just come back from Europe and travelled through Holland, Belgium and into Germany. TMC worked fine in Holland and Germany and updated the route so as to miss the jams and road works - absolutely brilliant. As soon as I crossed the border into Belgium all the TMC data disappeared - so its not just the UK who have the issue.
I popped into my OPC today re-something else, and asked what was happening regarding the TMC in the UK. I was informed that 'Its just a licencing issue as yet unresolved'. I remember seeing something in the press saying that an agreement had been reached, between the 'suppliers' and Porsche and it was only a matter of time before the system becopmes 'live' for all us lucky Porsche drivers! Why would need a new DVD disc or software upgrade? The system works - surely they (who ever 'they' are) just needs to transmit on the right frequency - like they do in Germany and Holland?
Graham

Graham, your OPC sells Porkers and tells Porkies!
TMC works here on all cars built after April/May. Try asking your OPC to explain that.

I see on the Boxster threads the MY06 price list and some new 997 options (£8200 for power upgrade!) and an extended navigation module. Dont know what it is but could it be an upgraded version with TMC?

Hi All

I have just received a "News Update Porsche Centre Hatfield" newsletter.

In the news letter there is a section on TMC
"Porsche Communication Management (PCM) 2.1 can now be made more dynamic with a Navigation?TMC update. TMC offers drivers real-time traffic data, enabling timely and accurate information on predicted journey times taking account of tfaffic congestion, whether caused by road works or accident. The Porsche Telequipment navigation update for PCM 2.1 will be available in the Autumn, please contact us for a quote"

I wonder what we should quote!!

I am awaiting a call from the OPC parts department and will post the costings when available.

I have spoken to OPC Guildford and they are still waiting for the PCM 2.1 to come into stock. However they are aware of what OPC Reading are up to and have told me that in addition to buying a new DVD ROM, the dealer will also need a special disc to reprogramme the unit in the car. This will allow the new DVD to work with TMC in the UK. By the way, there seems to be some confusion on pricing because I was first quoted £345 but apparently this is for the CD ROM (3 discs) version. The DVD (single disc) for us 997 owners is £230. Having said that I still am miffed in being ripped off because I bought my car in March this year and nobody told me about the 2.1 upgrade.

With any other "software" you buy elsewhere (including aftermarket GPS systems), you would normally expect any upgrades/bug-fixes etc for a reasonable period of time (often a year) at no charge.
Why should this not be the same?

I have had same communication from Porsche Centre Bournemouth. I have asked for a full specification and price. I have also asked if Porsche AG will discount or free issue this upgrade since it was an advertised feature of navigation system in the first place. Still waiting for a response at time of writing this. I will expect full demonstration of the "latest maps" to ensure that most of the errors and ommisions have been rectified, some hope!

Answer from OPC as follow:
"The only information we have at present from Porsche Cars Great Britain is that it is on CD format that is loaded onto PCM from MY05. Hopefully this should be available before christmas. We are unaware currently if this system is FOC for 997's."
Well that says a lot - NOT.

Geoff, I am now even more confused. Why do Porsche say they have PCM 2.1 on CD format? All new cars use DVD. Or is PCGB mixing up the formats like my OPC.

Myself (and anyone of you who would like to support me) to meet DN on the Monday of the Porsche Festival

Thanks for the effort. Unfortunately I can't back you up in person as I won't be there on Monday (only Sunday), but feel free to use my information with as much weight as possible to endorse the request.

I had also asked Porsche Colchester about it and they confirmed that it's likely a disk upgrade but did not have any details as of a few weeks ago. Checking for an update next month.
