Silverstone 944 track evening July 14th

Soooo jealous of you guys last week [:'(]

The pictures look great, did I read right that MarkK only brought his slow car? [;)] Just going to watch Peters video now. What a lovely Sunday morning it's turning out to be

ORIGINAL: Simon Davidson

Hey I am back in the PCGB, ........... i will start a new thread soon about the 3.9 range rover engine i will be fitting

Nice to see you back Simon, when will you finally let Allan paint that car so it's all one colour and looks as good as it goes? [:D]

Can't wait to read all about your V8 transplant when you get it started

As i had a few comments re painting the lux I feel a I should explain a little. Firstly I really love the look of old race cars especially when they are proud to have a hard life. Secondly I just cant bring myself to have any paintwork done until I stop cutting more off the car. I am already determined to cut the spare wheel well out and the GRP bonnet and badge panel will get some treatment while the V8 engine is being forced in, i mean fitted. I hope to start fitting in late August after one final track fling with the tired old lux engine.

What an engine the 2.5 8v lux is though, its so reliable but i just wish it had more power.

the 2nd video is up. This one was uploaded in HD.

Not my soundtrack though... unfortunatly United Music Group didnt like the fact that I had overlaid some Guns N'Roses on my track video so I had to use something out of the Youtube freebie box. ( or at least it will be when the audio swap is finished!!! )

Silversone Long Video

It is good to see cars moving around... Paul and I were both talking about increasing spring rates, hopefully the vid will help decide how hard to go. Will try and get the video on the drivers side next time cos from there you could really see the front wheel lifting.

was a little surprised to see the GT3RS 'bobble' as much as it does...

I really enjoyed the evening, thanks to Ollie and Darren. This was my first track day and I was so impressed with the 944's, all the cars looked superb and were so quick, well done to everyone. I was just knocked out with the laps in Ollies red car and Mark in his white one, brilliant! Great video Peter. The one thing I realised is that you dont have to race your car hard , to enjoy the experience, there is no pressure to go mad. So I hope to do one soon. Thanks again everyone for a great evening!

Another great video [:D], that GT3 was being driven quite erratically all evening, it was getting faster towards the end but still was really only quick on the straights and the cornering manners/mirror useage left a lot to be desired. Bit of a waste really [&o]

Glad to hear you've got the taste for trackdays now Michael!
Are you tempted to join us in August? [;)]

lali -- yes that was a great vid of my car and confirmed the need for some suspension work!

latest news story about weight and handling below:

----------------------------------------------------------------
Paul Needs To Get A Grip And Go On A Diet!!
29th July 2009
To translate, the handling of the car was just not good enough and the car was also too heavy by about 60kg. Urgent action was required.
On the weight saving front: door bars, some window winding gear, power steering pump, various unused bracketry and a lot of redundant wiring were removed. That saved about 20kg, then I fixed a problem inside the fuel tank which will enable me to run with less fuel load, this gave another 15kg saving. Finally a nice shiny stainless steel exhaust was installed saving almost 15kg more and might also unlock some power. That should help me along nicely, so am now off the diet!
Good news is that I have had a step change in the handling since the last race and now had a very good trackday at Castle Combe learning the 'new' car and the track ready for the race there on 31st Aug. For the first time it feels chuckable and gives me a lot more confidence on the limit -- a good result especially when that circuit is such a bumpy track.
So the changes: Harder springs 800lb front & 550lb rear, with about 4 degrees camber front and 2 degrees rear. Then softer shock and ARB settings. Corner weights were a net of 110kg out ie the sum of the extra weight on front left, compared with the extra weight figure on rear right. All of it cannot be dialled out but just over half was. Final mod now is the need for a lightened flywheel -- just found out I have a standard dual mass one!! This must have been holding me back and I now want the extra acceleration to help me stay with the top guys. That is on a plane now and should be in the car by Thruxton on 15/16th August.
NOTE: Ben Demetriou, currently winning Class 1, was coaching me at Castle Combe and also drove the car and now says it is almost there ahead of the new flywheel. So I am quietly hopeful of a better 2nd half to my season -- could this be an F1 McLaren moment!

800lb front springs :p, blimey, that's twice what I'm running!

How are you finding it without the power steering?

Sounds like the car is coming along a treat Paul, can't wait to see it in action.

Peter-hi

No power steering is a strong positive for me -- better feel and perhaps quicker response to changing grip levels etc. Only prob is walking pace in the paddock when gorilla arms are needed!

The harder springs have been a revelation and together with softer settings on the other things -- the handling is truly transofrmed. May also moderate uneven tyre wear a bit. To get the best out of your lighter car (?) I would hazard a guess that you should be on something like 600lb front and 300-350lb rears.

uuummmm 17th Aug is tempting for Mk II -- depends on how I get on racing at Thruxton on 15/16th.

I was hoping you wouldn't say that about the power steering, I suppose it's inevitable that I'll get rid of it one day, but I do wonder if I'll regret it when using it on road (I remember Fen looking into adding electric power steering after he got rid of his, for example).

I like the sound of your suspension setup, I was contemplating going a bit stiffer when I have the suspension overhauled next time, the only thing that puts me off going too far is I think I'm a bit borderline for road use now, it can be pretty lively on bumpier roads.

I've read a rennlist post on PS that suggests racers are actually quicker with PS by about 1 sec per lap (by TonyG, the chap with the LS conversion)

You're absolutely right about stiff springs on the road - they just don't work. That's when a car becomes trackday / sprint / race only. I've had 2 ex-race cars that I used on trackdays & drove to & from the circuit They were very uncomfortable, and I wouldn't even contemplate running one as an everyday car.

IMHO if you wanted to build a great track car, you wouldn't start with a 944 (too heavy for a start..) It still remains a great compromise between road & track - I can't think of a car that will do both jobs so effectively.
