snow scene & 944

Scotty,
i am a non PCGB member but a paid up for the next 3 years TIPEC member, i have previously been a PCGB member but let my membership go due to various reasons with certain sections and members of PCGB.
I have considered rejoining but to be honest i think the membership fee is expensive about the third of what i pay for insurance on both of my 944 Turbos (both mint by the way) with or without a certificatfrom PCGB, I am not tight, far from it i spend quite a considerable amount of money on things for my 944's that most people would never dream of just to have them right.
You are bang out of order having a pop at people who choose to use their cars all year round, as previuosly said it's their car and their money and they should do as they please.
Good 944's are becoming scarcer now and it's a sad fact that a lot are worth more in bits, keep yours minty and it will be eventually one of the better ones and be worth more accordingly.
Ferdinand Porsche i am sure would have been happy to know that his creations are still blatting about with big miles on them in all weathers come what may and the owners enjoying them as he intended.
Mine still don't do salt though (Sorry Ferdinand)
In a word Scotty..........Chill !

Let it snow some more. My 944 can take it.

Here is mine after a snow fall last Friday night - with a warm bonnet as I had the audacity to take it to work with me! [:D]

This isn't entirely fair, different people enjoy their hobbies in different ways. There is a great deal of satisfaction to be gained from owning a really nice example of something old, whether it's a car or anything else, particularly something fairly rare & a bit special like an old Porsche.

Scotty has a point, in another 20 years the only 944s still around will be the ones that were conserved or preserved rather than used regularly.

However when the Scottys of this forum want to know how to fix something, the ones who know the answers are the ones who use (and break, and then fix) them.

There is room for both, try to get along please because both types need each other.

Quote of the year, I couldn't have put it better myself. [:)]

At the moment it's cheaper to replace the car than fix it in many cases; with Luxes easily available for under £1500, and a big service often costing that much, it's not surprising that there are so many cars being sent to that great scrap heap in the sky.

I think there's a lot to be said for preserving the cars if you have the time and money. You won't ever get it back, as has been said even the worst money-pit of a 1980s 911 will be worth more than the better car that the 944 is. You will, however, be responsible for preserving a bit of history.

I have thought about this before. Is the enjoyment about owning the car, or using it? Personally, it's about 50:50 I guess: I love driving it, and being part of a great group of enthusiasts, some of whom have become really good friends. A big part, though, is just coming home and seeing the car on the drive, and thinking "that's mine".

I hope that people who express strong opinions either way are part of this forum. It'd be very boring if we all agreed, but it's not a pleasant place to be when people gang up, or when anyone is thoughtless when posting comments. That's what Pistonheads is for. [;)]

Decided to bring the car out of the garage today and take it for a short spin..... really wish I hasn't bothered. Roads were much worse than I expected.....

Anyway.... decided to treat the car to 968 door mirrors and handles for Xmas.... to be fitted soon. Yes that really is snow all around!

Judging by your driveway that looks like a mission too far on reguar tires ;)

I had to make a short 1/2 mile run down the the village garage today. Although the roads are now clear of snow they must be a little icy as I couldn't keep the wheels from spinning even in second. I've got brand new tyres and drove mostly on idle but it was still hairy.
Must be that damn Promax chip lol[:D]

Do you think using my car in bad weather has devalued it ? I'm not going to sleep tonight now!..........[;)]

You need some nice winter tyres [:D]
I drive my 968 every day, and the skinny 205 nokian's transformed it.
I had a very fun (albeit at 30mph max on the 'clearer' sections) drive out to the shooting club last week.
Hard pack icy snow. Turn in, quick prod, balance the opposite lock and gently lift off [:D][:D][:D]
Havent enjoyed a drive that slow that much since the rally mini in similar conditions.

I guess Im devaluing my 'rare' car too, but I enjoy it sooooo much [8D]

Been driving my red turbo this week, the photo of the red dirty turbo a while back inspired me to stop being precious and just get it out and drive it,being careful though as the roads are a bit slippy, still got r888 toyos on it which are not ideal with such a peaky power curve.....[:D],I love the car so much with it's burbles whooshes and pops and it is running really well after a BIG service and check at Promax,I think it likes the cold air too.
I do battle with myself about using cars in rubbish weather but like the film said one day we will all be worm food and Seize the day and all that.

I guess you were not driving through a tiny village high street then [:D][:D] ...........you've been watching too much TopGear Dave[;)]

I drove our 968 once last week when the RFL on the Rangie run out, does this count [:D]. The 'other' one has been sat in our 4 walls and floor painted and sealed garage with the dehumidifier rattling away since October, race cars lead a pampered life off track.

I absolutely did not go out for an hour at 12.30am just to do this on the icy back roads the other night, and if I had I'm certain it would not have been an aweful lot of fun ballancing the car without having to exceed 30mph.

I agree there are probably two sets of people who drive Porsches those who drive them as a different and interesting means of transport and those who have the luxury to be able to store them in bad weather or only drive them when the sun shines.

I am one of the former who uses his 944S2 as an all year round car primarily because I have to although if possible I will leave it behind when the roads are covered in snow and slush, but not to preserve the car more my sanity. However I do think it is wrong to cast judgement on either group of people it is after all the choice of the individual and if driving in bad weather stops the car being a pristine example then again that is the owners choice. These cars were designed to be driven and personaly I woould prefer a car regularly driven than one hardly used, but that is my decision.

My S2 has to stand on the drive as the garage is full of motorcycles and I recently left if for 10 days in sub zero conditions with over 20" of snow covering it, how nice did it feel when I cleared the snow off the other day (took over an hour) and climbed in to find it bone dry and able to start first time. I felt really smug especially when other people in my road with much more modern machinary could not get started.

Everything in Scotland is at a standstill at the moment. Motorways still shut, etc. I think the world has fallen apart, it is also a balmy minus 12.5c at the moment!
Looking forward to the inevitable burst pipes in the garage!

I enjoyed almost an hour in a large carpark near here in the middle of the morning - seaside carparks are nice and empty in the snow. I have never been so far sideways for such long periods, and the controlled ken Blockesque donuts around the lamp post areas felt good. i even had an audience of fairly senior dogwalkers spectating for a while. But anyway Ben I see the student lifestyle isnt cramoing your car buying too much, how long have you had the 996?

PS I would have stayed for longer but was running out of fuel and rally driver victory style donuts made me queasy

What again? Must be defective pipes you have up there - it burst when I was there last year as I recall!

Crappy design where they come out of the floor David. Have been frozen all week so managed to get in today and lifted everything off the floor as a precaution! Better to be safe than sorry.

Quite. Mind you I think you must have permafrost up there by now - I'm getting a bit fed up with the thermometer not clearing freezing but that must seem quite warm to you currently.
Must be starting to cause other issues like diesel freezing or oil like mud isn't it?
