912 'Champagne' Spring Run to Reims

Top up your oil, check your tyre pressures and head with us to the continent for the 912 Run to France this Easter. As some of you will already have read on the Forum and on the web site, Gavin and I have planned another 912 extravaganza for your flat-4 adventures that follows on from the success of the Donington and Ypres spring events of the past few years. The formula is the same - maximum fun, minimum expense and lots of cunning treasure hunt clues to test your driving and navigational skills on some great driving roads. And have we got a treat in store for you in 2004! Here's the deal:

Saturday 20th March, meet at Dover for the channel crossing to Calais. On the ferry we'll give you your 'clues' and road map for the treasure hunt. Plan your route carefully! We'll drive in convoy to St. Omer where we can get brunch, and then you're left to your own driving / navigational skills. Remember - the 912 you're following is probably lost and going the wrong way!

Overnight we're booked in at the old medieval town of Laon that perches high up overlooking the surrounding landscape. There's no time limit, the distance is about 200kms, drive at your own pace and solve as many of the clues as possible. We'll be waiting for you with prizes for novely, style and (just maybe) the team with the most clues. Then off to town (on foot!) for dinner. Check out http://www.ville-laon.fr to discover more about the town ( no surprises, it's in French!).

Sunday and you're free to explore, so you can head for Reims and the heart of Champagne country another 30km or so to the south. For those in the know, Reims hosted the original French Grand Prix in the 1930s, 50s and 60s, we're told that the grandstands and pits are still there today, fading away. Otherwise, enjoy the city, its history and culture. Just be back in Calais early evening for the return ferry - you can take the auto-route (13 Euro toll) if you want to zip along. And don't forget just how flexible a 912 load space is for any shopping.

The total cost is based on two people sharing and is £85 each. This includes your ferry and your hotel accommodation in Laon.

Cheques should be made payable to Porsche Club Great Britain and sent to me (Stuart) at the following address ASAP. Clearly state your name/s address and telephone number and please state whether you will require a twin or double room at the hotel.

It's up to you to check your insurance cover for driving overseas and to you're your own arrangements for breakdown cover if you want to take it because we cannot be responsible for breakdowns (not that a 912 will break down though, surely not!?!).
See you there, Stuart.

I've found a web site that charts the history of the old Reims circuit for anyone who wants to come exploring on the Sunday. Some great photos past and present... check out those roads too!

I was in the Reims area in September 2003 returning from a driving trip in South Burgundy and planned to stop off to view the old grandstands along the way. I had 'clear directions' which I'd printed off a website. I even took along a load of old photos as a comparison.

The only problem was the main road which passes through the grandstands is no longer open to the public - and has been 'bypassed' with a dual carriageway which was being finished off at the time of my visit.

After about half an hour of driving around the area I came across a small roundabout with four or five exits - BUT one of the exists was totally blocked off and had 'no entry' signs.

So, what do you do when you've driven halfway across France to see an old circuit and the road is closed?

Of course, I nipped around the barriers and about half a mile down a perfectly straight road came across the old start/finish straight.

To say the whole place is atmospheric is a massive understatement. I spent about an hour there just looking around in awe (my other half was even impressed by the place and she has absolutely no interest in cars or motor sport).

I guess the plan is to flatten the place now that the road is no longer in use. It's a real shame that no one in Reims seems interested in what the place stands for. It's not even mentioned on the Reims Tourist Board website.

Best of luck with the trip - and try and get to see this 'monument to motor racing' while it still stands.

If anyone needs directions leave a message here and I'll study my map and try to remember how I found my way around the closed roads.
