Sunroof

Andy,

In the absence of anybody more knowledgeable answering this one, I think that the micro-switches and the associated cam are next to the sunroof motor located in the 'wall' of the boot. I haven't yet explored the workings of my sunroof yet, but it is on my (ever-growing) list of 'jobs to do' on my S2. I must admit, I've not done it either, but I thought the microswitch was under the roof panel next to the windscreen. I think that's what the little plastic tab on the suroof panel presses on.

Mike, that is just one of them on the 944, don't know if the UK market '84 924 is the same but should be easy enough to tell. Then there are another 3 of them back on the drive motor.

The sunroof is an overcomplicated nightmare that usually gives every owner headaches.
 
If I remember rightly, it is on the roof just a few inches back from the courtesy light. This is where the OPC mechanic fixed mine when it was not opening properly. Hope this helps.

Why do you want to unplug it?

As the others have said, there is a micro switch between the sunvisors. The triangular shaped tab.

I think yours will be different to mine (pic of the motor in boot) '89 S2 two micro switches above motor.
Earlier 944s were different, micro switch above and below. So most likely the same as your 924.

Thanks for the info, its proven v usefull! Just to let you know why i want to un-plug it.

When you go over 10mph, if the sunfoof hasn't been locked down (i.e.the sliders havent gone back into the sunroof so you can still push it open) the sliders go back into the roof and stop, leaving the sunroof closed but the sliders back in the sunroof so you can't push it open.

Anyway at 10 mph regardless of what stage the sunroof is in open, closed, tilted, whatever it tilts up to maximum and then slips on the nylon gears making a horible sound that you can't stop unless you drop back below 10mph.

So booked the car in to have it sorted, because i wouldnt know where to start, but i cant drive the car without stripping the nylon gears down to nothing. So i've just taken the relays out of the motor with the sunroof closed and locked, and i can pop them in quickly if i need to take the roof off.

Car is booked in next week to have it done properly, because i hate having anything wrong with my car. [:mad:]

I agree. Beaky seems to ignore the ignition switch in position I or II criteria and retracts the legs completely which ever. To lock the roof I have to lean into the back and watch until the pin on the leg crests the incline and then take my finger off the switch. It's not very cool, and I tend to leave the roof locked unless I press the wrong button by mistake when adjusting the wing mirrors.

Those usually don't totally fail, they fail in steps and not being able to distinguish the ignition key position is step one. Borrow a fellow owner's working relay and see if that resolves the problem. But be aware that there are at least two different versions of the relay for different year cars so check the relay base and make sure they have the same pin outs. The early ones are missing one of the legs, I forget if it is leg A or 1, whatever, they are missing a leg.

I have every confidence that, as it is expensive, that will be the fault. [:mad:]

As I don't use the sunroof, I think I may stay happy in my ignorance as to whether the relay is going or not. If we prove it to be a faulty relay I wont be able to resist replacing it.
 
Can you hear the motor when you press the open button?
If you cant then take the switch outand check it works, and theres power to the switch.
If it does work then,

Take the trim off at the rear of the sunroof, there you will find two gears that work the arms.
Check that they have not been stripped or damaged.

if they are ok, then you will have the check the microswitches at the sunroof motor in the boot, I find that if i havent used mine for a while, like all winter, they sometimes stick.

If none of that works, then I'm a bit stuck without anything further to go on.
 
Are you pressing the close button to get the roof to latch back in? If so I believe that's the wrong side and paradoxically it's the open side of the button that latches the roof.

when I put it back in place the two rear levers don't move

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but ignition must be in first position otherwise the levers won't move forward to block the roof panel.

You people are wonderful, take a pat on the back, the micro switch had a bad connection, once cleaned the sunroof works OK.

If you're talking about the metal curved lifter then its likely your gear wheels are worn out.

you'll need to remove the rear cover panel, under there you'll find the covers, unscrew the one where the raising bar has come out and see what kind of condition the plastic gears are in

Cogs are only a few £s from Porsche. A lot more expensive on e-bay. [;)]

and buy two pairs (you'll probably strip the cogs on the first pair while setting it up :ROFLMAO: )
