I recently bought a new 944 badge for my rear panel £7 from OPC, regularly advertised for £22 on ebay which makes the porscheshop look cheap at £16.

I have a porche 944 coupe ,the problem I have is the sunroof will not come out as it says in the manual ,it says to open it then release the front catches and simply lift out but once I lift the catches it will not lift out ,any ideas ?

Are you sure you aren't confusing open with retract the arms then release the catches? They can only be retracted in ignition position 1 with the engine off. Little known fact also is that is you lock the car with the sunroof arms retracted it will also lock the sunroof [;)] Welcome to a great forum mate.

As Rob says sunroof switch does different things depending on ignition switch position.

What he neglectfully missed was that we do require payment in the form of pictures of your 944!

Have a look at the motor end and make sure everything is attached there - it's hidden behind the carpet in the rear nearside wing.

I would imagine in your case the clutch is so far out of adjustment it just slips when the weight of the sunroof is resting on the arms.

i have read think i get it !
i have adjusted some slack up via the motor for the cables and that with adjusting the slip clutch has got the sunroof going up and down although i have to push it home fully, i suspect the seal in past its sell by date.
i think i still need to do some adjusting as the motor will keep wurring away if the button is held down for too long.
at least i am moving in the right direction

There is a friction clutch between the motor and the cable to stop it stripping the gears at the end of travel when retracting the lifting arms (there is no limit switch to stop the motor). Perhaps the grease has got into it and now it's letting go too soon? There is a guide on Clarks garage that tells you how to adjust the slipping torque correctly.
 
As many of you will know, my car has be in and out of JMG in Christrcurch for the last 2 years, and I've asked them to attend to the sunroof over and over again. And it still doesn't work. Lots of mutterings about looking at wiring diagrams and microswitches, but no actual fix. Must be harder than it looks...

The seal around the outside keeps going Green and i keep cleaning it of again. The car is due for a respray soon so if any welding is to be done, now's the time.
 
my sunroof will go up and down manually so i dont think anything is slipping.
When you turn the nut, it is outboard of the clutch, so if the clutch is slipping the manual operation will still work. From my experience, the factory setting is in my opinion too stiff. It is OK when the car is new as both arms reach their end stops together, but if one gets to the end first it WILL strip followed by the other one stripping in sympathy a microsecond later. I backed off the clutch setting until it just drives the roof and also fitted spacers under the sockets in the roof itself so the arms move freely into place. Also make sure the roof settles down flush with the body particularly if a new seal has been fitted and not fully tapped into place.

You can't weld in the existing sunroof because it's plastic.
Best thing is to bond in a carbon fibre or GRP panel like this:

Obviously you will also need a new headlining (for a road car).

If the roof's never been removed then what were you doing retracting the arms?

If the motor is silent and nothing is moving then it is probably a switch problem; a microswitch somewhere (in the roof or on the motor) or even possibly the switch you push in the dashboard. The microswitches do go out of alignment; the one in the roof of my car jammed itself closed against the plastic surround earlier this year for no good reason. 'Twas a five minute job to take it out, bend it straight and clip it back in again but I have no reason what caused it to happen. (I blame thermal expansion and contraction due to all the stinking hot weather we are having these days. Oh, wait a moment .... [:eek:])

But - try taking the roof out now that the arms are retracted and then refit and see if the micro switch clicks into action
