Suspension & Brake refresh

Ed, My thinking was to get the rear back up, and if I wind them up tight without the helpers it should stop the banging a they won't be loose, no need to remove back box so only 4 bolts. I am clutching at straws, I don't have enough knowledge or time for anything else

trouble is, if you have the main springs tight when the car is in the air, the torsion bars may not be doing much when the car is on the floor (and they are still your main rear springs) bring your jack & tools to Bedford & we can all have a play [:D]

probably dont have to be tight do they? just tight enough not to rattle, the same as having the soft helpers compressed? so in compression the same, in droop they might rattle? though presumably the torsion bars apply pressure in the reverse direction once re-indexed and you droop past a certain point. Yes sorry that's what I meant, tight as in so they don't rattle, but bringing the rear up again off the floor! Good job I like a challenge, shame in a way I didn't just buy the RSX 104 kit to start with [:D] no need to have re-indexed and I could have enjoyed my weekends being in the car driving instead of underneath!

Sorry for the bad luck you've had with this, certainly tests the patience. Poor show of Spax I think not getting it sorted with you by now. Was thinking of buying Spax for my Golf GTI resto but starting to think twice now after a mate recently had similar issues with his Hope you get sorted soon Andy and enjoy Bedford [:)]

but that's what the helper springs are for isnt it? strikes me that there's something that doesn't fit as well as it should, rather than the helpers being too soft (although that might also be an option). I'm assuming the helpers are fully compressed at rest, but not fully extended at full droop? if there's any level of force from the helpers on the main springs, they shouldn't be able to move around and knock on the body of the damper.

You should have said about the springs Andy! Weather permitting I should be at Bedford and I could have brought something for you ;). They are probably a little irrelevant for you but I do have a pair of 10.5" 200lb springs from the 205 which are simply one rate. I removed them as IMO the car was a little too stiff on the front in addition to sitting too high (I dropped down a rate on the springs). However, the car is at a unit (although I could swing by Cov on the way :)).

Thanks mate that's kind of you, don't go out of your way though I think she will run without noise now, well not too much anyway! she is sitting a little higher at the back but will live with that for now. If you look at the video, the top collar that I am moving with my finger is the offending part which is making the banging the reason for this I have deduced is that there is not enough pressure on this from the spring - due to the fact that, set to the ride height I want the torsion bar is holding the car up too much and lading the spring enough. If I wind the spring up to stop the noise the rear of the car naturally goes up, so after Bedford the torsion bar will be re- indexed another spline and then once I wind the springs up to the correct ride height the top collar will be under tension - hey presto no noise!! Hopefully [:)]

Update, have taken the rear springs off, dropped the front to match and no banging....Yippee [:)] She is sitting a little lower on the rear but I can raise her on the adjusters, it is a lot lower than I had originally wanted - But I quite like it

Look at you, ya low-rider! [:D] Glad you got it sorted now Andy. Will you adjust the ride height do you think or just live with it as-is for a while?

Slammed I is dude [:D] It was vibrating when under load, not sure what that was? anyway she is raised on the adjusters and will post some pics later but here is another of the slammed beast....

When my S was set up on coil over I asked 4 a fingers thickness between tire and arch, came back with the rim half way inside the arch. 18" rims so it looked more slammed then yours, but prob about same. Had a front splitter on turbo front end as well with about 30mm ground clearance. I told them 2 take it back and set it up how I asked. I think it looks better on yours then mine as its rubber in the arches rather then alloy.

I am now happy with the ride height and the how quiet it is!! I think the best thing to do is just forget about the rear springs and pretend I bought the RSX 104 kit!! I have had a lot of correspondence with Spax, not impressed with them or there product and can only say I would not recommend buying a Spax product. I would like to thank all you guys for your help and assistance which has been fantastic............

I can now get back to driving and cleaning [:D] Cheers fellers

That's looking spot on now Andy, was a touch too low at rear in earlier pics. How much do you reckon you raised it by? Don't want to state the obvious, but I take it you are going to have Geometry redone now. Alan.

Hi Alan, I reckon she went up about 10 - 15mm, I thought afterwards I should have measured before and after! will be getting the Geo done next week.

Guy's As a newbie I would be interested in your thoughts. I am thinking of putting a Spax RSX kit on my S2 Cab. Good move or not. Aussie dollar to the Pound makes it a great option. Interested in any thoughts good or bad. Use is mainly fast road.
