Suspension & Brake refresh

Ed thanks for all you input and help, Yes the helper springs are already compressed at rest. The spring plates are adjusted to lowest setting. From memory the rear springs have 120 / 4 stamped on them. not 100% but will have a look tonight. I was actullaly thinking of putting some weight in the luggage space to try and help settle the rear? I am not going to be able to re-index for a couple of weeks, just hope I can get it done before Bedford, otherwise is it ain't going to be too good as it is!!

The other thing to do is to set the rear dampers to full soft. Apart from that I don't know what to suggest.

I don't know about everyone else, but I hate researching threads that I think are going to give me an answer and then they leave me hanging... So for all those (if there are any) that were wondering about the Gaz Gold kit install, these are the results of my research! I spoke to a couple of well-regarded 944 Indies, who set up track cars. I won’t mention their names publicly as I don’t want to start a debate about who gives good advice, but I’m happy to share privately. They both said the same thing: You take the weight off the back of the car so that the torsion bars are unloaded and set up the coilovers so that the springs are just ‘nipped’. When the car sits on its wheels, the weight is taken jointly by the coilover and the torsion bar. This is for the Gaz Gold kit, which doesn’t have helpers – I didn’t ask about KW… All of which leaves me feeling relieved, as I’ve re-indexed and, with the car set up as above, it has about the same ride height as it did before I started tinkering with it. I’ll play with it this season and then decide whether to lower it further… Roll on Bedford!!

Just a quick update, I have played around with the rears and all to no avail, so biting the bullet and re-indexing this weekend.

So managed to get the Re-indexing completed, really chuffed that it all went ok to be honest and wasn't as hard as it was made out to be reading the reviews and write ups of course I had the use of a 2 post lift and very knowledeagable mechanic on hand!

Think I may have to paint the driveshafts now [:D]

Well done Andy - Hope it all sits nicely when you get it back on the floor.. btw - i would have cleaned & painted the torsion bar carrier as well [;)]

Thanks Ed, I am happy with how she is sitting now you are right about the torsion carrier and it was a bit disapointing to have put it back together without finishing, but it was a 1 day job and to fair to my mechanic it wouldn't have been fair to push it, the whole job was done for £100 [:)]

I haven't had a chance to try her out yet, Mothers day yeaterday, off work today as it's Lin's birthday today and too much snow about [] Going to call Spax tomorrow, I still have a major problem with the rears banging! it appears that the shoulder of the top or the shock is hitting the spring when coming down, the spring will not seat straight above the helper, hard to explain but is as if the top spring is not strong enough, does that make sense? Will have a look one evening this week and try and get a pic (better not do it today [;)] ) if I can get underneath and point the camera without lifting off the weight.

ORIGINAL: andy watson Thanks Ed, I am happy with how she is sitting now you are right about the torsion carrier and it was a bit disapointing to have put it back together without finishing, but it was a 1 day job and to fair to my mechanic it wouldn't have been fair to push it, the whole job was done for £100 [:)]
That is impressive, Andy, took me weeks!! (but the garage floor was very very cold...!). Have you had it 4 wheel aligned?

Great photos Andy showing some nice clean bits. Looks like a very thorough job, hope its nearly sorted now. Mine was on the ramps yesterday for the MOT and looks ok but nowhere near as nice as yours [:(] Btw Mothers Days/Birthdays all good excuses for a trip in a 944! [;)]

Finally tracked down the where the banging noise is coming from, dosen't matter if the coils are wound up or down, whether the wieght is on or off the wishbones, funny enough the offside is nowhere near as bad as this nearside. Another call to them tomorrow, lets hope I have more luck with them this time, going to email this over to them and also speak to D.C Performance. Anyone else fitted this kit and had this or any other problems??

That doesn't look too clever Andy. What sort of seat is there between the helper and main spring? I've usually found these things fit together pretty snugly.

Ed, the seats are plastic and are snug fitting, not sure if you can really see from the pic?

The problem appears to be that there isn't enough force pushing on the top spring retainer, when I wind the coils up to max ride height it takes a larger bump to make it bang. Also the 2 springs do not stay in a straight line, I have some pics I'll post later. I really need someone who has this kit to comment on how there's are. Becoming a "wish I hadn't bothered" project now, I am sure it will be ok eventually

Maybe that's why some people run without the rear coils on these kits?.... Not something you can do easily, but fitting a larger torsion bar instead would work. It all seems a bit odd really. What you don't seem to have there is any sort of fixed seat for the top of the spring - Is that the problem? compare yours to my kw's

all I can see that might be used are those 2 pieces to the right of the c-spanners with the piece cut out - are they fitted up against the top mount?
