Suspension Upgrade for 944 S2

ORIGINAL: sawood12

Strange. When I called up the OPC to order the TB's he came across two M030 TB's listed. Upon furher inspection he came to the conclusion one was 25.5mm 944 M030 and 30mm 968 M030 which is why I thought the 968 M030 was different. Oh well, maybe he forgot his glasses that day. I went with the 944 M030 option as I knew they were 25.5mm from my own research with the PET and didn't want to go bigger.

Wonder if the 30mm were 944 cup.

Crumbs Fen, people are in the love with that car! If you could put that look in a bottle and sell it, you'd be retiring by this time next year ...

Did you have any problems with speed bumps and road surfaces with it? My S2 is all on standard springs and D90's, and seems to ride a smidge higher than most others I have seen, and yet even that touches very slightly when loaded 4-up and going over speed bumps. Any lower and I'd be digging holes in road surfaces (and losing bits of waggon in the process.)

Oli.

Never had a problem with any 944 grounding to be fair, even the Turbo with the front splitter. Now the Mini...

I guess the old S2 looked OK, but looking at the pics now I don't like the cut down numberplate and it was crying out for clear front indicators.

Negotiations start at 10k Sterling (blimmin' NZ keyboard with no Pound symbol!). That's the rub - I don't know that the market would support that just now (or ever again?), but it's way less than the sum of the parts, never mind the labour to put it all together.
  • 1990 944 Turbo in Glacier blue
  • Rust and accident free shell (apart from a blister around the number plate lights), Waxoyled and Hammerited around the sills prior to fitting 968 side skirts
  • Strasse built ex-Porsche race series engine circa 300bhp
  • KW v3 suspension with re-indexed torsions[;)], including replacement of the axle mounts
  • Weltmeister adjustable ARBs front and rear with Rose jointed links
  • solid bushes front and rear (wishbone, castor, rear arms)
  • Rose jointed adjustable top mounts
  • Front strut brace (I think Weltmeister)
  • Big Black front brakes with Performance Friction 97 pads all round and 964 Turbo drilled front disks
  • Griffin custom alloy radiator
  • Custom thermostatically controlled oil cooler
  • air-con delete
  • power steering delete
  • power windows, headlight height, headlight wash, rear wiper, central locking, power and heated mirror, hatch release etc. removed including stripping wiring from loom
  • seats replaced with 2 x Corbeau Sprint XL, solid mounted
  • 2 x Sabelt 5 point harnesses - mounted but never used (because there is no rear cage/harness bar)
  • Genuine 17" Cup 1 wheels with Dunlop SSR track tyres, painted anthracite
  • 18" Cup 2 replicas with road tyres
  • 968 CS door mirrors (i.e. manually adjusted)
  • Carbon fibre 968 Turbo S adjustable rear wing
  • Carbon fibre effect front splitter / undertray
  • Front fog/driving lights removed (parking lights relocated behind clear indicator lenses)
  • Lindsey Racing "stage 5 header panel" (badge panel with big hole in it to aid intercooler cooling)
  • Momo dished suede rimmed wheel
  • Rennsport adjustable throttle pedal and matching brake/clutch pedals
  • Fuel and brake lines entirely renewed from the tank to the engine bay
  • Spare fibreglass bonnet (not fitted)
  • Goodridge brake hoses
  • Clear indicators front and rear (I ran the group buy a few years ago...)
There is more I'm sure were I to sit down and think it through properly.

The car is a track slag, not a looker or daily driver; there is gravel rash/chipped paint, marks where the side strips were removed, exposed fasteners holding the side skirts on etc. It is also not that pleasant to schlep through traffic in; no air-con and no power steering sees to that. Lastly the bushes squeak like a box of mice when it's warm, the Rose joints chatter and the brakes squeal like stuck pigs. I think that's all part of the character and you could use it everyday but it would be hardcore.

It would come with a full MoT which would probably mean a new windscreen as well as it is cracked due to my being a clumsy berk with the bonnet one day.

Hi Fen, out of intrest do you have any photos of this car you could post ?

Cheers Steve.

Are these the shocks mentioned in this post ? http://www.suspensiononline.com/Porsche-944-968-Koni-Sport-Shock-Strut-p/koni-8641-1414s.htm
How adjustable are they and for what ?
Also i have been reading this http://www.944s2.com/suspension/suspension.htm and i see the rear MO30 ARBs are adjustable, is the case for all 968 MO30 rear ARBs, silly question but is this to adjust the roll and if so whats the best setting....?

I have called up Porsche centre Exeter and Proven Products who all seem to think the parts for this little project are ready avalible...looks like i will be making the order tomorrow SO...is there anything which i might need to add to the order while im there ?

This is the list i have so far:

Koni sport adjustable front and rear
968CS FRONT SPRINGS
968 FRONT M030 ROLL BAR
BUSHES FOR ABOVE
BUSHES FOR ABOVE
WASHERS FOR ABOVE
968 REAR M030 ROLL BAR FOR MANUAL TRANSMISSION
BUSHES FOR ABOVE

I gather from what i have read hear am i right in thinking that my the new 968 MO30 ARBs will fit my standard Drop links fron and back ? Are new Caster mounts worth the lolly ? And top mounts ? can i use the original ones or should i replace with new original ones or new uprated ones ?

Thanks for any help chaps... [:)]

Steve.

Drop links no problems.

Top mounts if OK keep if shot have to think about fitting KLA ones (Essential Styling sells em) as new OEM ones from Porsche where an eye watering price, perhaps they have come down now.

New 968 caster mounts are more important then all the other stuff except replacing shot shocks.

Yes they are the INSERTS mentioned. Remember you will need to cut apart your old shock, drain the fluid, drill a hole for the insert bolt and then fit the insert inside the old shock. They are adjustable for rebound - basically you have a white knob that fits on top of the shock, twist it one way for softer and one way for firmer. There is about two full turns of adjustability.

The rear 968 M030 ARB has three holes for the mounting bolt. In practice most people use te centre hole as this will keep it balanced with the front ARB. The other two holes will bring oversteer or understeer unless you can adjust the front to compensate.

I would definately fit the updated caster mount at the same time, your old rubbery ones will be very worn by now

Thanks for the info guys... Caster mounts... Do you no where the best place to go for the updated ones would be ? I guess i wont know if my top mounts are shot until i take them out...

Sorry chaps but another question.... Are there caster mounts on the front and rear or just front or rear...and would the 968 ones fit fine and be classed as the updated version ?

Cheers Steve.

Castor mounts are just front, they mount the rear of your wishbones to the car. Dead easy to do, even I managed it. 968 ones are the updated version.

Do we no if the ball joints will be affected by this suspension up grade or should that all be ok as the car is not being lowered that much ? ...

Been watching this post with much interest and quite fascinated by a) all the different solutions and opinions and b) everybody's knowledge! Here's a slightly new take I guess:
Fortunately my car already has the M030 factory option, but it has never been touched since new and the car has done 118k. I am certainly keen to do 'something' to the suspension because a) I know whatever I do it will feel much better and b) I want a lower ride height (currently lowest settings on M030 and rear spring plates) for the looks as much as a lower centre of gravity. Although I haven't experienced KWV3 I believe everybody who says it is the best available, but I too am struggling to justify the £1350 product price (forgetting labour at the moment). I know I can get my M030 dampers refreshed and that is reasonably cheap and I quite like the 'old-school' feel. Is there a simple replacement front spring option to go lower? Also, how much would it cost in labour to reindex the rear torsion bar alone? Realistically, I suppose I'm aiming to achieve a lower ride height with new suspension (front and rear) and my comparison is between KWV3 or refreshed M030 with shorter front springs (and reindexed torsion bar on both accounts). Thanks.

Spoke to Essential Styling today reference the KLA top mounts and was given a price of 120 a pair... i know this is a lot cheaper than the original porsche ones but are the KLA the ones to have? i was told they have no rubber in them at all but this sounds like they might bang over pot holes/speed bumps ect ? Are there any other top mount options i should be looking at ? is there a adjustable top mount of any sort for controling the top of the strut ?

Thanks Steve...

Ben how do you find the MO30 Set up on the 944 ?

M030 fronts have adjustable spring perches so you can wind them down lower,
Tony

They do knock a little but offer much more positive location than the originals. Adjustable are an option but are also without rubber and pricier.

Steve.
The KLA top mounts are solid, ie NO bushing at all...
I have seen them + to be honest look cheap + cheerfull. + personally i wouldnt fit them to my car...
I have a pair of the "unobtainable" Dynatech mounts fitted, THERE GREAT...[:D][:D][:D]
There are the Racers edge ones or others, you pays your money ,, etc etc etc ....

It should only become an issue if you lower it, although if it were me I'd look to uprate them with something like the Rennbay kit whilst it's all in pieces.

I use the Racers Edge top mounts and they seem excellent, so if you want adjustability I'd say they're definately worth investigating.
