The money no object garage question(s)

Fen

Spawned from another thread that went off-topic (noooo, surely not!) I thought it might be fun to discuss a couple of related questions. Or not. We'll see what you guys think I guess.

What would be in your garage if money to buy and maintain plus availability was not an option? Let's say the garage only holds 10 or 12 cars max, though.

In a similar vein years ago at work I was asked an interesting question; "If money was not a consideration either to buy or run, but you could only have one car, what would it be?" I'm happy to share my answer, but it might be fun to see what others think.

OOOH everyone runs off to think.....

Fen,

It's a question which is regularly done to death on Pistonheads, with various tweaks.

For it to be useful you need to put limits on it. So, 6 cars, or 10 cars, or something. Or even just one car.

And is it to last you for the rest of your life? Are you allowed to borrow (or hire) other cars? Can we have modified cars? If so, how modified? A classic Mk2 Jag with full XKR running gear, perhaps? What about your wife - is she allowed a car as well? (Mine isn't - she's very nervous when driving and public transport is less fraught, but that's neither here nor there.)

If you question is "What one car would you own for the rest of your life, no modifications allowed?", my answer would be an Audi RS2. (One we have done ad mortem here before.)

If you were to open it up to 4, or 10 cars, the answer would change.

Would I be allowed motorbikes as well?

Oli.

1) That Bugatti Type 57S Atalante found in the garage in Newcastle - never seen this model before, but I love the shape of it.
2) My 944, in beautiful deep shiny Azure Blue
3) My Silver 1981 Ford Cortina - It was my first and only new car, and I've always missed it since the day I sold it.
4) A Black, Red or Silver Carrera GT - just to hear the sound.
5) A 911 turbo - 1980's, just like the poster. Probably in Red.
6) A Ferrari - probably an old 60's model, again in Red
7) Something practical to get to work in, a Silver Mondeo or similar.
8) Something for Beloved to drive - maybe a Silver BMW Z3 which she likes, provided the boot is big enough for her clothes shopping.
9) A Lamborghini Diablo - Yellow
10) Something kind to the environment - that new electric sports car that was on top gear.

Oli,
Wife - see 8) above.
I wouldn't bother modifying anything.
No motorbikes - vehicles need doors and a wheel at each corner.
I'd be happy keeping these for the rest of my life, except the Mondeo - that would be replaced regularly, and 8) That would be bumped regularly.

Would love the following in a 12 car or so dream garage;Veyron,carrera Gt,993 GT2,Daytona Spyder,F430 scuderia,F430 spyder (manual),Gallardo Superleggera,Ruf yellowbird,Maserati Quattroporte,Rolls Royce Phantom,Cayenne turbo S,9ff twin turbo 951(just to see what its like)[:D]

For one car only dream garage-Ferrari F430 coupe manual(Rosso,Crema,Shields,Tubi please).....

That was a nice two minutes of dreaming!

I would need a bigger garage but for starters
Sunbeam Tiger Mk2, Ruf GT9R, AM DBS (just to look at), Enzo, Diablo, Porsche 959, Atom, Zonda F, Mclaren F1, Jag XJR-15 and Carrera GT.
Doh, that's 11. As you can see all practical every day cars for popping down the shops! I'd keep the current one for that[:)]
Oh, and a Spec C Scooby as my four seater.

  1. AM DBS
  2. Austin Healey 3000
  3. Ferrari 250 GTO
  4. Ferrari 308 GTO
  5. Issignosis Mini Cooper
  6. Lamborghini Countach - just to look at
  7. Lamborghini 400GT
  8. Lamborghini Reventon
  9. Ford Mustang GT - Bullit car
  10. 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS
  11. Porsche 998 convertible
  12. Porsche 944 lux - mine
  13. Mercedes 280 SL Convertible
  14. TR6
I don't want much do I!!!!

Great idea [:D]

Only 12 cars??? That's a bit of a problem, thank god for the edit facility on this forum [;)]

In no order:

1). My White car when it's 'finished' (how sad is that?)
2). Modern recreation (or original racer) of a 924 GTR or similar
3). Metro 6R4 - perfect shopping car and run about [;)]
4). Lamborghini Countach (with spoilers)
5). Lamborghini Diablo GTR race car
6). Ferrari F40LM
7). 993 GT2 lightweight
8). Zonda (not fussy which model...)
9). Spyker C8 (to look at whenever I feel bored)
10). TVR Speed 12 (silly!)
11). Aston Martin DBR9 (noise!!!)
12). Ferrari 550LM (not entirely sure why I want one, but suitable donor cars are getting temptingly cheap now).

I seem to have completely missed out the classics and classic racers (Lola T70 for example, Porsche 962 and 917), and a Mac F1 LM and a Porsche GT1 wouldn't go amiss... In fact the 550LM shouldn't be in the list at all and I haven't even added a Bentley Blower, or an Aeromax or a...

Oli.

I visit PH approximately quarterly, usually when someone posts a link to a thread that sounds interesting. I don't really like it enough to go there regularly somehow. We'll get a better class of respondant here.

If you want rules then here you go:

The garage has space for 12 cars maximum. You have all the money in the world so if you choose to fill it with 150 unicycles then that is OK. Let's assume when it's full you are keeping those cars as you have unlimited money and availability of what you want is not an issue, so there is no need to buy a red S2 while you wait for a nice Glacier Turbo to come along [;)]

For the other question it's one car you have to own and use. Sure you can hire a Transit on occasion to move a wardrobe, but it's the car you take to work, Tescos, the in-laws. It is also for a reasonable term; not for life, but not for 2 weeks to see what it's like and then get something sensible. Your partner does not need to drive it ever, but equally he/she has a car of their own that they use fully and you get no access to. I guess I can allow joint use of either car though when I was asked this at work I did not consider my wife nor her car in formulating my response.

I honestly don't have a list of 12 yet, and like Dougie it is probably going to be pretty fluid until I have worked it out. What I can say is that no vehicle I currently own would feature on a list of the last 12 cars I can have until I die. I know for sure it would include, in no particular order:
  • Pagani Zonda (probably roadster, but I'd need to look into it more)
  • Veyron
In terms of the single car I chose a Macca F1 for being exotic but practical(ish). By that I mean proper German engine, some luggage space and 3 seats rather than 2. As a bonus it is LHD/RHD agnostic.

1. Donkervoort D8 270RS - the only car I'd have if I could have one "only"
2. My current 944 turbo [:)]
3. Lamborghini Gallardo, original form
4. TVR Cerbera 4.2, original form, slightly redesigned so it won't break down.
5. Bugatti 59
6. Cobra Daytona or AC A98
7. Ford GT40 Mk1
8. Lola Mk1
9. Lamborghini Miura SV
10. Lancia Integrale

I know I'm in the minority here, but the Verywrong, ahem, sorry, Veyron does nothing for me. It's ugly, too heavy and has far too much trickery to be my kind of car. I'd rather have the 9ff car if I wanted that sort of power to weight. However I do have to admit that if I were to own only one car it would probably be quite high up the list, which is rather wierd [&:]

Wow, that's an, err, unusual looking car!

Forgot to add the Iso Bizzarini and Yamaha 099-11 to my list [:)]

C554192D5ADC4BF1868CAF2252133A78.jpg

1) My 944 as I only just got it.
2) An E34 BMW M5 for when I have passengers
3) A Ferrari F50GT for when i need to scare the crap out of something
4) A Z4 to keep the missus happy
5) Some form of ultra911... 993GT2 or 997RS spring to mind.
6) James Bonds Lotus Esprit (preferably submersible but id take a standard one)

then fill it with classics, a mixture of performance and looks;

7) Ferrari 512BB
8) Iso Grifo S1
9) Maserati Ghibli Spyder
10) Lamborghini Countach
11) BMW M1

forgot a modern classic;

12) Lotus Exige to chuck around

Now im gonna go play with my virtual garage; Forza 2 on the XBOX 360... Closest I'll get ;)

I've been mulling further and was hung up on the practical car. After all one of the 12 has to be of some actual use beyond looking superb and not being able to get across a speed bump. I think I've settled on a Lamborghini LM to fill that particular niche.

I'd need something Porsche I guess and I'm not sure what. I don't think the marque necessarily would get 2 spots, so I'm probably going to go predictable on 1973 RS Lightweight. Much as I like blood orange and viper green I'd probably take it in classic GP white. Fly in the ointment is that I do like a bit of forced induction so a 930 or 935 appeals. I'm utterly certain the one Porker would be rear engined and have neither radiator nor coil springs.

I'm pretty sure my acid green or bright orange requirements could be met with a Miura.

I'm struggling with a Ferrari - do I really want one? The only one that has me at all is the 250GTO. At this stage I guess I'd probably have that on my list, but it might get bumped if the spots fill up and something really jiucy is not on there.

I have to admit that I am liking some of the suggestions on here Fen and the logic. I am in a rather lucky position in that I have a friend who has driven pretty much all the recent high end supercars, has an opinion I trust, and crucially isn't hamstrung by either the gestalt on internet forums or journalism.

- Pagani Zonda, don't really love the way it looks but my friend tells me it is amazingly good, I really do mean amazing as well not just quick and intoxicating.
- One of the mad AMG mercs has to be in any ultimate garage as the ultimate modern hyperperformance luxo barge sportsscar, something like the SL63 would be great for those weekends away across the continent.
- 73 RS or the 2.4 S I should have bought 6 years ago [:(]
- Bowler wildcat thing or whatever it is called and some off road fantasy play ground to drive it.
- A recent RSR or similar race car for the ultimate track day thriller.

I would keep my 968 and use it as a shopping trolley.

Good point, I didn't think about an off roader. Luckily, I only spec'd 10 cars for my garage, so this can be number 11. If we order the two at the same time, we might get a discount. [;)] Fifth Gear had something like it last night - Bowler Nemesis?

Kerching! Bowler Wildcat! Can't believe I forgot about them, and I have been thinking "what would I use to play in the mud/bush?" as well.

I have half-filled my garage now and already I can think of at least another dozen candidates.
