The money no object garage question(s)

easy I'd have an Aston Martin
vantage1.jpg

Ok I'll play too.

Mk 2 Mini Cooper 1275S - the original (apart from the Mk1 that is!) and the best!
Volvo Amazon estate - just slightly played with...
E30 2.7 Alpina Touring - only 14 RHD mind.
My Caterham 21 but with a duratec engine.
TVR Cerbera 4.5 lightweight- but I want the one that works regularly.
Porsche 996 Turbo X50 - something for daily use!
Audi RS2
E39 M5 or an Alpina B10 V8S - not quite sure which.
Weismann coupe
Aston Martin DB6 Vantage
1 VEV AM DB4GT Zagato (or 2 VEV if someone beat me to it!)
Zonda F cab - hell why not.

I think I'll claim the prize for cheapest 12 (except the Zonda) but they are all cars that I really quite fancy.

Oh great fun!

  1. Ferrari 250 GTO
  2. Ferrari Daytona for cruising to the yacht in the Med....
  3. Porsche 993 GT2 in orange!
  4. 1973 911 RSR
  5. Lotus Exige - the supercharged one in Kermit green
  6. TVR Griffith 4.3
  7. Original Lotus Elan Sprint
  8. Current Audi RS6 estate
  9. Lamborghini Miura, complete with Matt Munro soundtrack...
  10. Aston Martin DBS - 007 alike!
Oh, and my 944t of course.....

I love this kind of thread

I know I'm in the minority here, but the Verywrong, ahem, sorry, Veyron does nothing for me. It's ugly, too heavy and has far too much trickery to be my kind of car. I'd rather have the 9ff car if I wanted that sort of power to weight. However I do have to admit that if I were to own only one car it would probably be quite high up the list, which is rather wierd [&:]

I admire the Veyron for its technical achievement of 1001BHP but agree with all that you say. If I had to have one hypercar it would be a McClaren F1 LM as it's almost as fast as the Veyron and MUCH lighter. Did you see the Top Gear episode where the Stig took a Veyron around the track. It was only about 4th fastest car they've had. Fell very short of being the quickest and a few weeks later was beaten by a powerful Caterham. i mean a Caterham!! Its a Lotus 7 copy which is a 50year + design and the Veyron is slower on a track[:-] than a 50 year old classic! Too heavy.

I bet the F1 LM would top the Top Gear board, even today. 680BHP in a car weighing less than 1100KGs.

And didn't the Verywrong look boring doings its lap. Compare that to this one [:D] (don't have any sound connected on this PC []). I do realise that's not quite comparing like for like. So then, what about the unofficial time the Ultima GTR did? I have to agree that nothing looks quite as much fun as the Caterham lap though.

Wow, that's an, err, unusual looking car!

A Donkervoort held the `ring record for a while IIRC

I`m still compiling mine but wonder if Fen remembers the Lambo LM2 , I certainly do. It cost the equivalent of two Cayennes in its day. I wonder if the hummer was based upon it [;)]

Ok my list...

Ford Capri 2600 RS in FULL race trim,,OR E9 BMW CSL [Batmobile]again in FULL race trim.[ This is after last years visit to the Classic Le Mans.]
Porsche 935 Fire spittin turbo...[ Yet again Classic Le Mans.]..
Vauxhall Chevette HSR 2.6 AKA Russel Brookes rally version.
Caterham SV with FULL lightweight package..[ Got to be an SV as i cant fit into a normal one]...
Aston Martin DB9 / Vantage.
Porsche 968 Club Sport in Yellow OR Riviera Blue..
Merc AMG C class "BLACK".
Ferrari 355 spyder in Blue mettalic.
Fully covered in trailor, OR even a fully kitted out transporter...
Poss an Audi RS 4 estate..For mundane load lugging. Or pulling the trailer to race events..

The rest im still thinking about....Theres just too many to be able to drive....[8|][8|][8|][;)][;)][;)]

Its a Lotus 7 copy which is a 50year + design

Not any more, they`ve ditched the de-dion and gone independant and the number designations mean bhp/ton. They should try a well set up and tuned Westfield also!!

I had a Westy 1) tall [and wide] folks do not fit cateringvans and 2) they are stupidly expensive but they are not a better car in my book)

To start of with I am thinking of including: a highly tuned VXxe engined Westy or their XR4 or a Radical, Ultima GTR or Arial Atom, Lancia Stratos, Hilux 4x4 truck (owned one for over 18 years). roadgoing 917...............................................

Good game, good game
After a quick think - first draft....

1. Mk1 VW Golf GTi (boy racer)
2. Audi RS6 Avant (family man)
3. VW Camper split screen - with all the custom kit I can fit in it. (festival mobile)
4. Landrover Defender V8 (let's off road!)
5. Westfield Megabusa (track car)
6. Escort RS 2000 (just remember watching Escorts rally when I was a kid)
7. Orange 1969 Dodge Charger (obvious)
8. Aston Martin - not too picky as long as I can drive it from the dealer brand new.
9. A hyper car of some description
10. My current Lux with all the bits I cannot afford currently.
11. My first 993cc Vauxhall Nova in white

As for ideal garage, I would stretch the meaning of the question and specify my ideal garage itself and (for the moment) keep the cars I currently have.

My ideal garage would have dry storage for 12 cars, have a service workshop area with a four post lift (all the best tools I could ever need), have a body restoration/metal working area with chassis jig and rollover spit (for easy welding of the underside) and a spray booth/bake oven. I'd also have a machine shop with lathe, mill, pillar drill and other useful machining bits[:D]. Of course a massive compressor and lots of air tools.
I would then restore for my own use:-

Series 1 3.8 e-type
Early 70's 911 2.4E in yellow or orange
1960's Mini Cooper
Mk1 Golf GTi
series I or II landrover
A really challenging and old car where I have to make many parts (pre wwI)
Of course I would get the 944S2 and my Morris Minors tip top before starting on that list- should keep me busy for a few years then I would think again.

If I could only have one car, I might have to keep my Morris Traveller, just because I put so much effort into restoring the underside some years back, although I'd be absolutely gutted to have to let the S2 go[]

OK .... if John would add a Citroen DS to that list, and probably a UR-Quattro as well, I'll live next door to him and share his garage (if he'd let me!) [:D]

Oli.

ETA: He may find me spraying his early 911 white one day though ... with a blue stripe along the bottom of the sides ...

I had forgotten there was more than one version of the Lambo off-roader. The Hummer was in the frame as well. In fact an H3 is a serious real-life proposition as a replacement for the Cherokee one day since Jeep stopped making a real Cherokee in 2001. Fantasy-land would be an H1 though - if the Lambo didn't exist.

The LM-002 was born from the 1-off Lamborghini Cheetah prototype military vehicle. Sans doors.

And there was another 1-off LM-004 which was essentially an LM-002 with a torquier 7.3litre Lambo marine engine replacing the detuned Countach Quattrovalvole 5.2.

Crumbs ... the LM002 (quad-carb, IIRC) was meant to have a massive thirst for juice ... a 7.3 litre engine'd version must have been stupidly expensive to run!

And unique tyres, IIRC. Was available with a roof hatch for hunting with falcons, I suspect it was mainly designed for countries where the oil is a little cheaper! [8|]

Funny you should say that, but I really like the Citroen DS. I would restore one of those too to go in my garage and with such good taste, Oli, you'd be welcome! (although I'd hide the spray guns )[;)]

I'd think about asking nicely if I could leave a Caterham (R400 probably) somewhere in a quiet corner as well. But they are only small, and I'd let you drive it as well John!

Oli.

ETA: Toying with the idea of an original BMW328 as well. No, not the 328 that everyone is thinking of, one of these instead:

17-bmw-328.jpg

... but it may usurp the e-type. Having said that, both could be an option ...

Oli.

OK, OK there were lots of LM variants and they all had different names. I'd clearly have to have the most powerful one [:)] (after all it is my practical choice). Lucky availability isn't a concern with those tyres, eh?

I'm liking some of the suggestions that I would never have thought of. 328 is especially nice and would beat an E-type in my book any day. Might not be so clear cut on an XK of some sort though.

I'm still mulling my last 6 slots and there isn't likely to be a Jag in there, but I am semi seriously tempted to buy a Mk2 in the real world as down here there are some surprisingly affordable ones that are still usable. Usable as in perfectly fit and healthy and not so concourse they can't go out in the rain.

Now I think of it the E was probably the first Jag that started to lose it for me, and it went downhill pretty quickly from there until a stab at moving in the right direction when they put round lights back on the front of the XJ.
