Track Days

I have never seen that bad etiquette on PCGB day. Steve usually makes expectations pretty clear before you are allowed out!

To be fair, someone official had a word with him after I had. I then heard the guy's wife berating him with "I told you so" lol!!!

Mark - I looked on the RMA site. The prices aren't too bad - I thought it was just for posh boys in their GT3's [:D] Is there any sort of membership fee as well?

ORIGINAL: edh so did you book any Dave?
Yup! Cadwell Park on Saturday 29th of March and Knockhill on Bank Holiday Monday 26th of May. I've got my eye on a couple of dates at Croft and possibly a run around Donnington with the guys from Motorpunk magazine.

Got Brands Indy booked in a couple of weeks to just have a roll round to see if i can remember which way it goes[:)]

Thanks for reminding me Mark, I need to book for Brands soon largely because I have always been unremittingly carp at Brands [:D]. Very tempted to do the Goldtrack Silverstone GP day in a couple of weeks, if the weather stays dry it could give me a good baseline for this year. God I hope the weather stays decent, really need the track time before the racing starts.

If you go before Thursday you should be OK. I did do Silverstone reading my older post, went on 9th feb was well worth doing as I collected some fantastically useful data on the logger and got to drive again for the first time in several months. Was bitterly cold back then though. 1.31g in Luffield and corner speeds way beyond anything I have managed in the 2nd half of the lap previously but soooo slow in the 1st half of the lap. Can I blame the conditions? winter testing is an odd thing so I am trying not to read to much into it all. CSCC Test day at Snetterton next Thursday is next up! Just need to get my Range Rover tow barge fixed in time [&o]

I did a day at Curborough last week - very informal (non-MSA) timed sprint, organised by some guys on midlands pistonheads. Did it in the Boxster, had maybe 12 or 13 runs for £60. The Boxster was excellent - seems very forgiving and controllable, with slides happening nice & slowly and not snappy. I was impressed how deep I could brake into the corners without unsettling it, in fact it's really necessary as it's still a bit understeery. There were approx. 15 cars running - a huge spectrum from several MX-5's, couple of 350Z's, 944 turbo (hairyarse's old car), turbo mini, various FWD hatches, a supercharged E92 M3, supercharged Atom, a hillclimb westfield & an OMS single seater. The track layout appeared very simple - enter through the gate at the finish post, sharp right hander, right/left complex, then round the top bend, down the straight & brake for the bottom right hander again. Three laps timed. This is a video from the day of a chap in a 997.2 C4S - he was very quick. [link]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N51oQ6yyaEY[/link] We all signed a bit of paper (presumably a disclaimer - I didn't read it), but after that it was extremely relaxed. There were no age limits on passengers. No helmet requirements either - so no-one bothered apart from the Atom & OMS (single seater) drivers. Actually I'm not even sure the OMS driver wore one.. They have been running these days for a couple of years so many were regulars. It might have appeared simple, but it wasn't - I don't think I ever got the top bend (Fradley) right - too much understeer. By the end of the day I was getting the nose in more by braking much much deeper into the apex. The right / left was great - and much faster on the second and third laps, so needed a slightly different approach second time round. Through the day I pushed my time down gradually, getting ever closer to 1:30.0. Best time was 1:30.1 & I'm sure my last run was going to be even quicker until I went a bit too fast at the right/left on lap 3.. I was impressed that the car managed to keep me on the tarmac after a few twitches.. I'll definitely be going back - maybe with the 944 next time, maybe with the Boxster on AD08's... (I bet they are worth a chunk of time). The timing element certainly makes a difference to the day - I enjoyed the element of competition.

Sounds like FUN,is the course nice??Is it flowy?Any hairpins??I would love a go at that! Are there different classes? What would a 944 turbo be up against?? Had a few laps of Snetterton yesterday was a different layout to anything I have seen, was lots of straights which kind of suited my heavy road car[:D]

The track is very narrow so makes precision imperative, and surprisingly challenging as one error blows your chance of a good time. There are two hairpin 'ish bends at the top & bottom of the course - watch the vid I linked to. It's all very informal so there's only one class for road cars above 2000cc. I'm coming to Rutland so I'll tell you more about it then.. Here's all the classes and times - from an email the organisers sent after the event Right, the times from yesterday; (FTD) Derek - OMS 2000M - 1'20.0 - No improvement - fastest in class 3 (fastest ever) Nigel Pugh - Porsche 997.2 carrera 4S - 1'24.6 - New car - 1st in class 2 (new leader) Michael Andrews - VX powered Westfield 1'25.5 - New car - 2nd in class 3 Carson Wong - Supercharged E92 M3 - 1'26.3 - Improved time - 4th in class 2 Kev - Ariel Atom - 1'26.7 - No improvement - 4th in class 1 Ross P - E92 M3 - 1'29.2 - New driver - 9th in class 2 Ed H - Porsche Boxster - 1'30.1 - New driver - 10th in class 2 Paul Hammant - Mazda MX5 - 1'30.1 - Improved time - 1st in class 4 - (new leader) Shaun Fisher - Nissan 350Z - 1'30.4 - Improved time - 12th = in class Rich Harman - Porsche 944 Turbo -1'30.4 - New car - 12th= in class Marcus - Mini Cooper JCW - 1'30.4 - New car - 12= in class Ashley Brown - FN2 Civic Type-R - 1'30.5 - New car - 4th in class 4 JJ - Nissan 350Z - 1'31.1 - Improved time - 16th in class 2 Luke S - Clio 172 Cup - 1'31.7 - Improved time - 6th= in class 4 Kane - Suzuki GSXR 750 - 1'33.2 - New Bike? - 1st in class 7 (new class - alternative vehicles class!) Been to Curborough each year for several years ,initially with Steve Brookes's organised days in the 964 & then since with Region 22 's day in May with the 924S-this year -May 22nd-£35 the day & got 15 runs last year ,half the time on the full circuit. Sometimes wet at 1st then drying out-Ed's right -it's a great little circuit but quite testing-staying in 2nd mainly apart from the long straight-left foot braking in the bends---Boxsters do very well with their balanced handling but 968's are impressive as are C4's. Look forward to it every year.

Left foot braking eh! Funny I was talking about this being a good idea for Curborough - just need to summon up the courage to try it.. The Boxster is well set up for LFB, and relatively easy to do on the road but I'm not sure how much finesse I have with it so might go horribly wrong when flat out.

Ed, I have used LFBing for years starting with a tuned Austin A 30 I use to rally & do sprints but was never very successful--since running the BMW 530D with steptronic transmission I have practised more & more until generally apart from a real emergency stop ,I always left foot brake. It really started because to engage gear, you have to depress the brake pedal so it was natural to then use the left foot so keeping foot on throttle for swift getaways rather than handbrake each time(to stop creep). Initially one tends to not have enough sensitivity but now I don't have a problem & it is particularly useful at Curborough on the "mounds" wiggle and on the sweeping bend & then the lefthander following when starting from the timekeepers hut using the full circuit.
