Turbo GenII Driving Event at Silverstone

Damn, VBH won't be there on the 1st Dec for my freebie driving day at Silverstone OPC in the new Turbo. I'm taking my younger brother as the Mrs is in early days of a 'family way' and 500BHP launch control starts is not a very good idea! [&:] We get a Turbo each, so he is very excited.

I'll start this thread here so that I (and others attending on later dates if they wish) can add the report from the day.

Apparently we will also be visiting the Farm Straight on the Silverstone circuit to do some straight line acceleration tests.

Only 5 days to go...

PS: mustn't forget my complete driving driving license and the indemnity forms! [8|]

I'm impressed that its a car each [:)]

That's what it was for the facelift Carrera day I went on a few months back. Groups of about 6 cars I recall.

Just got confirmation:

The group will be 12 guests per session and everyone will have their own car (each accompanied by a Porsche Driving Consultant).

I booked the 3rd Dec, last place available for any dates. Having done the Silverstone thing before I was not that bothered so did not phone earlier. Could only get the one driving place so taking the wife (under pressure) she is not a fan of these occasions. So its cost me a flash hotel hope its worth it.

Interesting about the possibility of getting on to Silverstone track, as the Porsche track is short and unlikely to show of the Turbo talents, hence the reason for my in difference to the invite. Now looking forward to the day [:)]

If she's your guest then you should get 2 driving places between you?!

My wife loved the Carrera facelift event a few months back. She's really annoyed she can't do this one with me.

It's alright for some.............. I don't think reading about it on here will be quite the same somehow![:(]

Sorry Alan, I will take my video camera and get as much video and pics as I can... [8|]

I still don't think though that the Silverstone OPC handling circuit and the short launch control exercise on the main circuit will be enough to see how this car properly handles though. I really need to take it on one of my Reading routes of fast bumpy/twisty b-roads to get a real feel for the differences. I might try to blag a weekend demo car from my OPC when demand goes down more.

Then again, if we get the use of part of the Silverstone track then I assume we will need to go around the whole circuit to get back to the start, so a few fast corners might not be out of order after all [;)]

I think I'm heading down to have a look at the 2010 GT3 RS on Monday night (been invited, not sure yet whether I can get the time off work). If there's track fun going on during the Tuesday daytime, maybe I could stick around and join in "¦

That is what I thought but was told only one driving place left, but I could take a viewing guest. I will report back.[8|]

Just pulled up the confirmation email and it says " they are delighted to welcome me and my non driving guest. So that is that.

I'm going next Thursday 3rd Dec am slot so my black gen 1 turbo will be there.

Have test driven the new car on the road via my OPC last Saturday, very impressive. then had a GT3 all week and whilst I loved in the first day after a week driving it in and out of London I realise why for me personally the turbo is the best combo for my needs.

Now just have to convince the family, and we have a new family car to get first!

Weather is looking okay for tomorrow:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/forecast/5000?count=10

Albeit the temperature will certainly be under 8 degC meaning the tyres won't grip very much. Should be entertaining given the colder it is the more BHP can be unleashed by the turbos with the air being more compressed [:)][:)][:)] That rear end is going to frisky as hell!

Hey I wonder what happens with the water test sections of the track when it falls below freezing?! [8|]

The coefficient of friction falls from 0.3 (rubber on wet concrete) to around 0.05 (not a lot)[8D][;)]

Rather technical answer there Alan! I would personally just guess that the water jets get blocked up with ice so no water at all and they close those rides [:D][:D]

...unless they mix some anti-freeze or something in with the water...

Not quite, it's a low friction surface not concrete, so assuming the place is still open, the cold temp would probably mostly affect tyre grip as summer tyres don't work so well in the cold.

Under track heating?!![:D] I had the dubious pleasure of braking at high(ish) speed on some water/antifreeze mix dumped on Castle Combe by a Turbo. That too has a very low coefficient of friction![&:]

We all get used to very high grip levels but you can have a lot of fun going sideways. At this time of year my thoughts turn to the snow and ice of the artic driving centre.
