Upgrading a 981 PDK Cayman

I would not recommend putting that much power through a non-Turbo PDK. At some torque value there will be clutch slip never mind gear train stress. The PDK box is not a serviceable unit and exchange replacement is circa €10k.

Ehresmann has seen 450PS on his Powerkitted Boxster with no clutch slip but that was running the engine to around 8,200 revs. For drive train longevity he stays with stock limiter at 7,800 revs.

I was of course referring generally with the appropriate PDK box, much like the G50 G50/10 and G50/50 Merc built gearboxes, the best manual box by far ever built for Porsche … who builds the PDK for them?

ZF supply the PDK gearboxes.

Don't forget with the 991 gearbox forward of engine it means you'd have 7 reverse gears if fitted to a 981. [:D]

Thanks Ralph. Looks like a neat installation with a decent power and torque hike.

On a related matter, we've been discussing the difficulty of upgrading the Gen2 engine Siemens DME. In my village there's a one-man outfit called AKS Tuning [ [link]http://www.akstuning.co.uk/[/link] ] which specialises in custom tuning the VAG turbo-4 engine. Alex is also an ex-Porsche tech and a REVO Technik agent and told me that he's flashed a Boxster Spyder DME [no piggybacking required apparently], although I can only find an option to upgrade the 987.1 DME on their website. Unfortunately a suitable 4-wheel dyno wasn't available to check the Spyder's output, but if other examples are anything to go by, the power hike wasn't dramatic.

Didn't MrD say his Spyder had the Cayman R map? The 991/981 ECU encryption seems a bit tougher to crack.

TPC's kit uses a piggy-back arrangement as does their Atmo 355 kit. I am not sure I would want to put the turbo kit on a PDK though.

Not sure about MrD's Spyder remap and wasn't aware that 9X1 DME encryption had moved to another level over that for the 9X7 series. I wonder how the tuners are going to approach DME remapping on the next generation of turbo-engined cars, given the potentially significant power and torque hikes which can be achieved with a turbo arrangement?

I suppose you'd be concerned about the headline extra 100+lbf-ft torque increase with the TPC turbo kit. I think that the oil-filled PDK multi-disc clutch pack would probably cope OK, but it's long-term durability might be open to question. Mind you, the same could be said for the manual 'box clutch but then an upgrade would be relatively straightforward.

My long planned suspension upgrade was completed by Centre Gravity late Saturday (it started 08:30 Thursday!) and Chris and Jayne delivered the car to Silverstone Sunday morning for the PCGB track day.

Dampers are now Bilstein Damptronic fitted with Elbach main and helper springs, using GT3 front and GT4 rear top mounts.

At front are RSS wishbones with shims and PF caster puck, GT4 anti roll bar and Tarett drop links. Settings are 3:20 degrees negative camber and zero toe.

Rear includes 981C OEM front wishbones with PF camber puck, GT4 anti roll bar and OEM drop links. Settings are 3:15 degrees negative camber and 0:10 toe.

The rear camber was somewhat 'defined' by the parts fitted and the 11" rear tyre width and perhaps a little less camber would be better but on the front I can get more negative if I want to go from MPSS to Cup 2 tyres.

The GT4 rear anti roll bar needs a spacer to more robustly clear the PDK oil pan (I think it is less of an issue with the manual gearbox)

With the camber you'd expect the car to hunt out 'tramlines' on the road but it doesn't and turn in is far far better than previous, (as I would have hoped given the extent of the upgrade) and on track it doesn't know what understeer is. Although front/rear camber relationship is slightly odd being so similar, but based on one track day and driving home I don't feel a need to change it, other perhaps than to find parts that would provide less camber through more adjustment, if you see what I mean.

I am still running standard 991S front callipers, disks and pads, and rear brakes are completely standard. It would be nice to have some larger and slotted disks but I have not experienced any fade, just a tad of softening of the pedal towards the end of enthusiastic runs, which recovers to normal for the next run. So perhaps just a better brake fluid for the annual fluid change.

I am going to stop modifying at this point to allow my wallet some recovery time and because the car is at the point where cost/benefit starts getting silly.

 
Well done Ralph. Good to hear that your mods have been largely successful - at any rate, good enough for a first iteration. Maybe some fine tuning will bring the development to a desired conclusion for both road and track use.

A useful learning curve for Chris too I would think.

I have finally got round to registering for these forums and have just spotted this thread about your cayman. We met at Spa in June 2015, when I was running the 50th anniversary. I returned there a few weeks ago with my new 991 RS,.. pretty amazing on track. Glad to see your cayman is going strong and you are still fiddling with it .. :)

I remember it well, good day all round. I bet the 991RS is very strong there, I am back with Lot June 16th. Did your colleague change his GT3 as well, am I right he was going to get a GT4?

Thanks, yes quite bright! David sold his 997 GT3 and has a guards red GT4. It is a lovely car and they seem to go well on track! Am in Le Mans in June so won't make Spa then.. have a good trip

I have also just found this thread - and great to hear about the process and the result!

I had my own BS 981 (Dec 2012) with Jens Ehresmann in October 2015, for modification of the 3.4 engine - without update to 3.8.

I can only repeat the good things "ralphmusic" wrote about Jens - and will just add a copy of the message I wrote on Boxa.net last year.

I were also at the Track day in October on Silverstone, but somehow must have missed this car. Bummer - but hope to come across it at a later date

On the meeting at Blackbush earlier this month - I promised to send an update on the Upgrade I were about to have done.

I am fresh back from Duesseldorf, Germany - with a car which is pretty much un-recognisable (in a good way).

My Boxster S PDK (Dec 2012) was bought 12 months ago (x-997 Turbo), and I had been thinking about a upgrade for a while - and now it should be!

I contacted Jens from Ehresmann Automotive (Racing Erich on Planet-9), who together with collaborators have done good things to other cars - and he drives his own 981 Boxster "RSR" to good effect.

We agreed upon the following updates:

BMC filters, IPD plenum with 82 mm Throttlebody

Cargraphic longtube 200 cell manifold and M&M Sport muffler with flaps (replacing existing PSE)

Custom ECU mapping with on a extra new ECU

This means I can unbolt everything if next owner wants it back to stock - and I can Swap ECU when going for a service.

During the process Jens found that a Manifold Flap Valve was defect - so it had probably been 15-20 HP down before even starting the process.

To top it off - he also managed to give it a Alignment adjustment to fit my use (70 % road - 30 % track day - or attempt to).

The result is like night and day as it now probably has 370+ HP and 380+ Nm - which of course translates into a very physical experience when the right pedal is pressed. It can still be driven civilised - with a slight drone around 1800 RPM - which I feel is is getting a little less pronounce after the 400 miles back (or I have gone slightly deaf already).

I look forward to the Track day on Silverstone with PCGB in 8 days time - really to find out what it is made of. But for now it has lived up to my expectations and then some.
