Values

Hi all, I've been following this thread with interest-values of air cooled 911's seem to be fairly constant at the moment between £35 -50k, having said that, being involved with a leading Porsche Specialist, I get to see the reality as well as the speculative prices. It's really down to condition, history & desirability, Targa's & Cabrio's always seem to be worth less than Coupes and always have been. I am seeing 911's that appear on the surface to be very good cars but looking deeper, we are finding oil lines, coolers & tanks that need replacing, sills, B pillars & 'kidney bowls' rotting away, exhaust systems on their last legs, let alone engine rebuilds needed as oil leaks are visible etc. I personally value vehicles on what I see, if the images provided to the Club for valuation are not of a reasonable quality (I've seen better!) then Steve Kevlin will value the car he sees. My valuations are accepted by most Classic Insurers and indeed Locktons are happy to accept them, please remember, this is provided free of charge by the Club. If you are not happy with your valuation let us know-it is in everyone's interests.
As Steve Edwards has pointed out during the summer months, Steve Kevlin is inundated with requests for valuations and as MotorSport Manager has to balance his time, that is why I have volunteered to assist and I will be taking the time to relieve the pressure on Steve and providing valuations at this time. As I stated before, please do allow time for us to reply but if you have an urgent request, LET US KNOW- we are not mind readers!

Morning Albert
Yes some cars do look good but on deep investigation they can be rolling basket cases and some sellers are quite good at covering up horrendous botches.
It's all ways worth contacting someone who has a good kowledge because if you lay out £30,000 to purchase a car this can quickly turn into £45000 before you can really enjoy the car

It's good to hear that the club is addressing what was a serious failing in one of it's member benefits. When my car was valued by the club for the first (and last) time 3 or 4 years ago, the result was woefully short of the true value - and before anyone asks, I'm not under any illusions as to the true worth of my car, my 'personal valuation' is based on real world knowledge of classic 911 values and their ACTUAL selling prices. I also have intimate knowledge of the issues that 911's of all ages commonly suffer from.
Clearly, the problem was that with the best will in the world, Steve Kevlin couldn't be expected to keep pace with the price movements of all 'classic' Porsches, from 356A's to 997GT3 RS's - as well as perform his other roles within the club, something had to give. The good news is that the load is now being spread, which can only be good news for the service and those taking advantage of it.

You can always get a valuation from John Gylnn at who runs the Impact Bumper forum. - http://www.ferdinandmagazine.com/
He's well know and respected in the industry, and his valuation accepted in the insurance industry.
It costs £35 but is relatively quick and if you use him on a regular basis (annually) he get to know the provenance of you car.

John Glynn's your man john@johnglynn.co.uk
Porsche guru, runs the Impact Bumpers forum, owns the online Ferdinand Magazine, is respected by the insurance companies and most important of all, knows the market inside out. Cost of valuation, £35 but it's quick, realistic and worth every penny.
The club valuations tend to be very slow and very, very, wide of the mark

Aha............................[8D]

are values really going up this much

i have a nice example of an unmolested non crashed 3.2 carrera black couple with full reliability , 96k , standard 3.2 with sports additions from factory

any ideas of value - just for interest you see

ps also have nice original 16 inch wheels

pleasure to drive, just that when you drive it everyone wants to see how fast these old porsches go, whereas in my 98 3.4 people see this as a fast car and don't bother

ps love both cars to drive, however even though the 996 is modern, its a fabulous race car for the road, whereas the 3.2 carrera is a great cruiser

Simon,
We have driven from home to the west coast of Spain, above Portugal - the N roads are fantastic for the 3.2, it's proving more than a cruiser here!
With respect to values, if anyone on the forum were to guess more details on; year; condition; and service history would be needed.

I have just sold my MK1 RS2000 for 42k. This is ridiculous in my opinion but it is what the cars are now fetching. I am now wanting to seek a valuation on my 911 as I keep seeing the prices creep ever higher so want to be completely covered if the worst ever happens (Again :( )

Thank you. That's a big swing. Just contacted my insurance as I definitely want an agreed value policy but they are rightly saying that I need a club valuation. Want to use this as I have paid my membership & see it as a benefit.
Currently I am assuming that the car is on market value, I have submitted a load of pictures to them but if the worse happens (Again) then I will probably have to fight them to get a reasonable pay out? I keep saying "Again" as in 2012 I had a MK2 Escort RS Mexico destroyed by a catastrophic fire which was subject to an agreed value club valuation (RSOC). Not having one at the moment makes me somewhat nervous.

Kevin,
I know just how you feel, and luckily I haven't had the misfortune of losing a car. Call me pessimistic, or just a worrier, but I like to keep on top of these things; being under insured is something anyone can easily avoid. If you want to go the PCGB route see my post No.4 of this tread. Alternatively, you can consider John Glynn as suggested by Chris' post No.37, as you have probably already seen.
There have been unhappy reports about slowness to respond and undervaluing but the club isn't consistently under performing, honest! To be fair, last year I thought some of the valuations were very strong and were being returned quite promptly (maybe not both at same time though?). Good luck and continue to enjoy a stress free ownership.

Just shocked by the fact that Porsche Centre Leeds have a Guards Red 3.2 showing 29,000 miles (although the speedo is in Kms), 6 owners, non-standard steering wheel and audio and they are asking £110,000!!

Nice looking car but really??

This one is right hand drive Paul. I presume it's an import as it has the rare air con.

It is an import, not evidenced by the air-con (which was an option on UK cars, albeit rare) but the KM odometer. The price to a UK buyer would appear to be utterly outrageous, but to a buyer in the Euro-zone, the recent collapse of Stirling against the Euro would make it far more appealing. I suspect it will return to Europe...

Taking the "collapse" of Stirling vs the Euro (<10%) in to account, it would still make this car around £100,000 in pre referendum terms, to our European friends - still way over the top!!
