VEMS Engine management systems, plug & play ECU upgrade

Sorry can't answer that one as I didn't have the laptop logging at the time, but it's got a fairly well sorted enrichment curve as it warms probably about 200% at -5degC, 175% at +5degC and easing off up to 100% at 69degC which is my min running temp.

Is that Peeps cold start mapping or have you adjusted it ?

It's mostly what peep sent over with small tweeks to get a smoother idle as the temperatures rise from cold. Peeps Base map is a brilliant starting point.

We just installed a vems set up on a friend's car, it started right away and idled perfectly fine. A few hardware details need to be sorted before we can go for a drive but quite impressed so far, the interface is very good and simple enough. Looking forward to getting into the core of the tune.

Any updates?

Nothing to report at the moment, the cars is still tucked up for winter. Hopefully digging in out later this month and do the belts and rollers before any more tinkering.
I've been thinking about doing a stealth install and going back to a standard looking engine bay. What's so appealing about VEMS is it's versatility.

Re-awakening this thread as I've been having some issues of late with my ECU.

The story so far is:
Worked fine when recovered from winter storage.
Removed the ECU to install a switch to activate/de-activate the bluetooth module so that I could 'hardwire' to the PC if needed. (I also want to do the same for the A/B config setup)
Now the car is a pig to start/run.
All usual checks are okay, including continuity checks with the wiring harness but currently investigating a poor spark at plugs. Coil spark is okay but possibly a bit weak (new coil, although I've ordered a second just to rule it out)) But at plugs it's either non-existent or very weak (No. 2 being the strongest). This would suggest poor reference signal timing I think.
I have an auto-electrician booked for 6th August to investigate further.
I wonder if there are any VEMS users in the UK that might be able to loan me an ECU just to do a side/side test while the electrician is here?

Good evening, looks like I still get notifications for this, not something simple like the rotor arm, if the coil is good? Failing that, if it’s anything like mega squirt there’s 2 ignition drivers that can be burnt out if the settings are wrong. Pretty easy to replace, not sure about Vems tho.

Thought about going for wasted spark?

How old are the plug leads? On my first 944 the first time I ran my car in the dark with the bonnet open I couldn't believe how much the leads were leaking and it was still running reasonably. They didn't look very bad at all with a visual inspection in daylight.
I have also seen the resistance on the plug caps go out of spec, (they have a fixed amount of resistance),
Tony

Plug leads, rotor arm, cap are all less than 12months old. Coil is new but build quality these days I'm gonna try another one. Pulse signal is present at the coil so not sure what the problem is. Would like to try another ecu just to rule it out at this stage.

If you are suspecting the ECU Phil, have you spoken to Peep? Knowing nothing of VEMS I'm assuming it replaced the ECM and KLR units...if so isn't it under warranty?...it's not that old?

Pete

I am in contact with Peep, but it's a bit of chicken and egg, I can't prove what the problem is and it's a long way to send the unit back for testing, so if I had a second unit I could rule it in or out. I've got an auto-electrician booked to try and do some more detailed testing, but all the signs at the moment suggest it should start. i.e. I have fuel pressure, I have pulse signal to the coil (from the ECU), I have tried two new coils. I have tried 3 DME relays. The plug leads and distributor are all less than 12 months old. I appear to have weak spark at plugs (strongest on plug 2 for some reason) and reasonable (but not great) spark at coil. I have cleaned all major grounds. Pot luck, it sometimes starts after some tinkering, but won't run for long. Most of the time it won't even start.
I've checked and cleaned the ignition switch.
All I can think is either ECU fault (but what I'm not sure, as I say I have fuel and signal to coil) or a ground 'leak' somewhere.....but no signs...

hmmm...have you tried running a new earth lead from engine to chassis, no need to remove the old one, just use a jumper lead as a test....Not much else that I can suggest having zero experience with VEMS. Now if you had Vitesse I could simply say plug in the override board which disables the vitesse chip. If car then runs you'd know it's the chip and could send it back to John for test/repair......:)

Hope you get it sorted soon Phil, I know that it would drive me mad, luckily for me with these sort of problems I just hand it over to my son..:)...auto electricians aren't cheap...good luck

Pete

Was going to say earths too but Pete beat me too it, jump leads from battery earth to head. What sort of air filter are you running? (weak sparks could be poor contact between plugs and ground assuming you are viewing them held against head. fuel / air/ spark / compression / timing. Unlikely to lose compression on all 4 cylinders at once, timing loss often losses all 4 (no signal from flywheel or broken cambelt)
So sparks could the weak sparks be down to test method? holding against head? jump lead from battery onto plug should eliminate that. Double check Air (replace or clean filter) is VEMs MAF or MAP any way to test sensor? Leaving Fuel, you have some is there enough whats the pressure like in the fuel rail?

There is buried in the manuals somewhere a resistance value for each side of the coil,

Good luck!
Tony
