I am looking to purchase a 964 RS and wondered if any of you were able to assist, my requirements are:

1. excellent condition, accident free light weight specification (not club sport);
2. preference would be rhd but would not be put off by lhd;
3. not red or white;
4. standard interior, and preferably without roll bar;
5. must have original magnesium wheels; and
6. full service history with invoices, not just a stamped service book.

I look forward to your replies.

Hi Damen

The only RHD car I know of that is available is for sale at GT Classics for about 40k.

I'm interested to know why you don't want a cage in the car if you plan to track it, I have just had one put in mine as it gets used how it was intended to be, and the reassurance of a cage is worth the outlay.

Have fun looking and don't buy the first car you see, there are a lot of good LHD cars around.

I thought about going for a Cup car like Melv's but my RS struggles with requirement 2, 3 and 4.

I must admit Red was not my first choice but you should always buy on condition not colour. It grows on you especially after a Zymol.

LHD is the only is the one to have.

The roll over bar is a bonus for road and track use. It is not intrusive.

Thanks for the replies.

I think I would find a roll bar/cage a nuisance for road use, as from time to time I'd want to carry stuff behind the seats (difficult enough without a cage/roll bar).

I'll keep you posted as to what I find.

GT classic well worth the time to visit paul, true Gent and as honest as they come when talking round a car , i just bought a car from paul and without a doubt would recommend the guy to anyone..

Firstly, ignore these idiots about LHD being the only way to go[;)]

As the official forum RHD expert, let me assure you that if you are mainly using it on UK roads, RHD is the way to go. The power steering is as good as it gets in terms of feel and the driving position is not as bad as some would have you believe. Its no different from any other 964 RHD and the LHD cars are far from purfect in this regard.

I can respect your wish list save for 2 points. First and most important is colour. If you are fixed on the colour thing, you will probably have a very ong wait and end up with little choice. I know. I wanted a specific colour and 17 months after I have bought my car, non have come on the market. Buy on condition and history, not on colour, although I have to admit that the "pink" cars really aren't for me!

In the last 22 moths I am only aware of 3 RHD cars that have been on the market. 2 have been red and one was Rubystone pink! I own one of the red ones, GT Classics have the other and the pink, which I personally thought was a bit rough, sold fairly quickly. In the 6 months before that, I know of 2 cars that sold - a very good red car and a blue on in unknown condition.

I personally think the red cars look the mutts nuts and get a fair number of comments to back that up. However, each to there own but I would say that the car GT Classics have for sale seems to meet every criteria you have save for the colour. By all accounts, it is a very good car and worth a look.

On the roll cage thing, yes it does restrict what can go in the back a little but the biggest restriction is getting past the fixed back seats! Having said that, I have got a pair of wheels in the back of mine!

Good luck and be patient. And don't forget to come back here for lots of advice!

Owning one of the other RHD RS's that Simon mentioned I can also concur that having a RHD car for the UK roads was one of my criteria when looking for an RS as there is nothing worse than wanting to overtake a car on the back roads but being hampered by a poorer view of the situation.

My car is Guards Red, which originally I did not consider (Maritime Blue all the way) but after I saw it I knew it was going to be mine, and after seeing it in print (GT Purely Porsche, July 2005) I fall in love with it every time I see it .

As for the cage, mine is at Autofarm having one put in as I value my life far greater than the cars ability to carry a bit of extra luggage, and to be honest when the cage is in I think I will be able to carry the same as I did on my last trip to the Ring and don't see it as a problem.

Paragon have a Rubystone RHD RS. Think it's about 38 grand. Apparently full main dealer history with 67k miles. Don't know much else about it.

Don't rule out LHD. It's how it should be!

Best of luck.

Hi Damen

There are 2 RHD cars that I know of are for sale through Independent Specialists, the red car at GT Classics and the Rubystone car at Paragon. The red car I know very well and have driven, really is fantastic and has had lots of money spent on it in the last 2 years. Been on track in it and it handles beautifully. If red is not your bag, the Rubystone car looks to be pretty nice.

I would echo what people have said about a roll cage, the setas limit access to the rear space more than the cage and I have been on several long trips with soft luggage and never found it a problem. I was going to have my cage removed after buying the car but was glad I didn't as I wouldn't track a car without one now.

Re documented history, I think you would be better off ensuring that it has had what it needs in the last few years more than what has/hasn't been spent 15 years ago. A big service, clutch, new brakes and tyres plus a little tidying could set you back GBP5k easily.

Just my thoughts, best of luck with the search.

Regards

The red car is the car to buy. IMO, rubystone cars tend to be harder to sell and the red car is as good as you will find. Milage, spec, price etc. Spot on. And you would be buying fom a person who is widely acknowledged as not only being "The Man" but also the fairest and most decent trader you could find. If you are serious about a good 964RS and have the money, buy it. If you don't have the money, the amount you save on a cheaper car is will be spent a few times over on maintainance!

Simon - Agree on all counts except the car is red!! And he wouldn't want to be confused for you at a PCGB meeting and get all that abuse [:D]

That's why ya got that devastating close ratio second just hang back slightly and FIRE! Anyway you should NOT be giving these cars stick on B Roads anyway no problems overtaking carriageways etc....BUY A LEFT HOOKER take it to Europe and DRIVE IT for current RHD 64RS money you can buy a stonking LHD which in time will be worth more and I'm always right just look at differences between LHD/RHD GT3 practically none, these guys take over the river and enjoy them............

The problem is that there are some true "full time" 964RS enthusiasts who want to be able to use their car all the time for whatever they want. Yes, LHD is acceptable but for the UK it isn't ideal. You say that us RHD drivers are compromising the purity but IMO, on the road the LHD drivers are compromising, period! That's fine if the car is an occasional drive, trackday machine etc. But for those of us who are the true enthusiasts, an LHD car is just too compromised[;)]

Sorry Des, but the reason for the parity is simple. The cars are still depreciating and the rate of depreciation is about the same the world over. It is only when the cars start to appreciate that you will see a premium for RHD.

I cannot think of a case of an appreciating car that had more LHD built than RHD, where there isn't a premium for RHD. And this will remain. Damen's search for a car just proves the point. If he wanted a LHD car, he would have quite a choice and therefore might have room to negotiate on the price. In RHD, he cannot find the car he wants and will have to pay whatever the owner wants, or go without.

Simon ....not sure that he would have "quite a choice" if he was looking for LHD. His criteria states no accident damage. I'm told this is a near on impossible find and mine is white and not for sale.

I've seen the Rubystone car and all I can say is that I don't thing it runs on petrol. Pedigree Chums is more likely. IMO of course.

Hi Damen.....Having recently bought a 993 RS from Paul Mc at GT Classics, I would echo 'Sambaman's' comments. In addition, Paul is a true enthusiast who has a love for all things air-cooled RS and you would be buying from someone who's knowledge is second to none. My advice would be to talk to Paul, be patient and he will find you the right car. just to add, no I am not on commission, I just think when you find someone who does exactly what they promise...it's only right to let others know.

Good luck and remember, when you have outgrown the 64, there is always the ultimate of a 93[:D]

Until recently my everyday driver was a LHD Smart great car wish I kept it........64RS Lightweight as a everyday driver is a contradiction in terms....will do the job well and god bless you every day drive RS boys you must have good dental and bottom area back insurance....however nature of the beast is a cloned Cup Car with everything offset for LHD.....remeber is a road adapted track car and does what it says on the Tin RS RENNSPORT by Porsche unlike the fancy rebadged GT3's they are now prostituting the RS badge with.......I nearly bought a right hooker in amythist met RHD from Slough missed it by hours only £27000 three years ago and lovely........
