what did you do to your 944 today

Hi Giles, compared to a 944 Turbo or 968 it feels big, heavy, sluggish and soft....but it is a magnificently comfortable and swift way to get about compared to 95% of the cars on the road. Half-throttle off a roundabout has you going up through the gears from 3,000-4,500rpm, where the torque is, and it just effortlessly surges forward with a lovely unflustered V8 soundtrack. full throttle and it bellows around to the red-line with a lot of fuss and damage to your fuel tank contents but making good progress and it is fairly quick, it just lacks a little torqe low-down that they obviously fixed with the XKR! Lovely car. My only experience is that of a mate who bought a low miler convertible off an old feller who had given up driving. It had a few scrapes so he got it for a song and had a professional re-spray. Fantastic car, not quite my cup of tea as I prefer 4 pots below 1000kg but if I said woofy comfortable then thats how it felt. Urgent exhaust note whenpressing on, not too loud but nice and almost effortless pulling when pressing the pedal - accelerates faster than it feels, fantastic when revving it but found not a lot of point in pulling to the red line. Good build quality apparent too[:)] I`d have one if I hadnt other cars, timeless in my view too. Enjoy PS: I didnt know about chain tensioner issues so I`ll prompt my mate who isnt a mechanic at all.

Pulled the belts etc off fitted new water pump ( old one is still in good nick better safe than sorry) popped the belts etc back on. Took me 4 hours not bad for a first time. Everything came to bits nicely and fitted back together like a dream. Bean worried about doing that job for months.Everyone says its a nightmare but I would quite happily do it again and quicker next time.

Fitted my new radiator and reassembled everything. Filled her up with water and ran up to temp/pressure and no leaks! Also runs much cooler and maintains temperature now with a new thermostat of the right rating too. Left it to drain overnight and I'll fill with coolant and replace the fans tomorrow.

my S2 has not been as smooth recently so fitted a secondhand AFM from a 90k miles S2 cab and what a difference.Mine had done close on 180k miles.Quite happy now at 1200rpm in 5th and pulls in all gears smoothly through the full rev range. Big smile when back from testing. Nick [:D]

Refitted fans, filled with coolant, bled the system, put undertrays back on, washed it and booked a trackday at Croft for the 1st of June :)

ORIGINAL: andy watson Removed the driveshafts ready for new CV joints
Just did one of mine this week - much easier than I thought it would be, just very messy with all that grease! Careful not to drop your balls though - I did! [:D]

Sorted some hesitance when accelerating (See Competition Time Thread) fitted new poly bush rear drop links, drove it and cleaned the glass and changed plugs ready for Germany. All on the Turbo S (220 still in hibernation) Glorious day in Cumbria [:D]

Armed with information from that fascinating "Decarbonising" thread, I bought a compression tester and ran a check on the old girl. Didn't expect too much, as the engine has 160k miles on the clock and no head rebuilds etc. Results were pretty astonishing: 200 / 201 / 202 / 208. Plugs (NGK Iridium, 10k miles) were clean as a whistle with traces of perfect pale brown shading. I must admit she is running beautifully and pulling like a train - the 2.7 8V engine may not be the poshest variant of 944, but my goodness what an engine...

On Wednesday night I spent 8 hours removing (Grinding, cutting and swearing) the near side lower front suspension arm and replacing it with a refurbished one from Hartech. This task was undertaken due to an MOT advisory. It took 30 minutes to get all but the main bolt out, 7 hours to cut and grind and 30 minutes to replace. I've just taken the car for a 60 mile run and you can really feel the difference. I planned to take some photos of the job to post but when it all started going wrong.....I forgot. If anyone has any questions as to the process please ask.

Cleaned up the front brakes, fitted braided hoses and new bleed nipples, bled them and put it all back together, think I got the two wire plugs the worng holes as its complaining about brake pads and ABS ! Will swap them over in the morning.
