what did you do to your 944 today

Ahh...thanks for the picture Roger...I had assumed by your ID with 924S that it was an 'oval' dash model?....nevermind....I keep hoping to find one no longer needed that may be heading for the skip if not saved...:)

Cheers

Pete

Cable tie the instruments to the steering column and some of the longer term forum members will get deja vu!

Finally got a bit of time to fit the new custom made radiator from ( custom Rads ) great guy and excellent service and craftsmanship pics to follow for those interested in the alloy rad. 😉

am fitting a oil catch can which I’m modifying at the moment before I finally start her up again and then need to replace the feed power steering hose 🤞

suns out, time for a quick polish...:)

took mine out to the London XL classic car show, lovely day for a drive, that's twice this week, weds was a 120 mile round trip to Haywards Heath

I've been working on recommissioning my 944 Turbo after it has been off the road for 4-5 years getting a (slow) bodywork and paint restoration.

This weekend I managed to get quite a bit done (I've been working the car since November 2018), a culmination of all the preparation and previous jobs I've completed :)

As my wife's Stone Grey 924S is due an MOT & last year ,my friendly garage told me that they wouldn't pass it again unless the steering shaft was replaced,I tried to order a new shaft -initially from ECP where I got one last year for my Guards red trackcar for £91 inc VAT only to be told that they had non in stock ,they were on back order with Germany ,same at Frazerpart & Design 911 so ended up getting a very good used one from James at Only 9 at Anderton (he's moved into new better premises from Weaverham)

Was able to select what I considered the best out of 7 of them but a little subjective methodology-could only base decision on absence of free play.

So today fitted it -bit fiddly single handed apart from my wife holding the steering wheel at appropriate moments & angles.

Didn't JMG used to have these rebuilt, and offer them on exchange?

Paul,I remember those posts but unfortunately I left doing the job until the MOT was imminent so had to find a quick solution to keep my wife on wheels.

I posted for 2 reasons - as a post for anyone interested

-to advise the lack of availability & that Only 9 have some good s/h ones.

Of course I now have 2 removed shafts 1 from each car ,which could be .reconditioned.If I knew how to get the cup bearings out ( each bore is crimped 4 times to hold the cup in) ,then I would have a go but I imagine I'd need a high speed pneumatic die grinder , suitable burrs/grinding stones to remove the crimps & of course then confidence to know that the new bearings could be safely retained with what metal was left- probably need a bench mill to be accurate enough-plus getting appropriate bearings-all seems to add up to too much cost.

Should add that the steering shaft I selected from the choice of 3 was identifiable as being already a replacement as it had the remnants of the self adhesive label ,new replacements have

I'd assume there's a fixture to hold the joint, and then with the right cutter it would be easy to machine out the crimps. Perhaps Hartech do it, or sub it out.

I've always promised myself a bench drill-Aldi have one at £70 or so -then you need a cross slide vice & chuck to take take endmills(which I have) so looking at over £100-then 16 crimps to mill away-guess a not too sharp cold chisel would do to re-crimp-then all you need are 4 cup needleroller bearings.

I paid £50 for the s/h shaft which could last say 17/18 yrs ( existing one removed was the original after 34 yrs /112K miles so although I like to do as much as I can myself,it doesn't make economic sense.

A few tools in my roll cab and top box have only been used once, or not at all. I line everything up in the drawers, and admire how shiny it all looks :ROFLMAO:.

I rebuilt steering shafts, done quite a few 944/968 ones, are 924 ones a bit different ?

I charge £80 exchange for them

They are all the same as far as I can tell-even the power steering version is the same as the manual-but PET shows a different no for LHD cars.

If your figure of £80 includes top & bottom bearings, then that's a reasonable price plus postage of course both ways-as above last ECP price was £ 90 or so inc VAT-prices I saw last week for other suppliers varied around £134-£128 inc VAT.

However both the ones I've replaced would really only need the bottom bearings replacing

Today I took advantage of the amazing and unseasonal weather and took the 944 into the Peak District with my wife and our dog for company. We sat outside a packed village pub near Chatsworth, basking in the warm sunshine and kept reminding ourselves that it was still February! It was a great drive and on the way home I even got a wave from a red Boxster.
