what did you do to your 944 today

Following on from last weeks steering shaft change,oil & filter change ,then successful MOT, I changed the gearbox oil today in my wife's 924S today.

Used Millers fully synth EP 85/90 from Opie Oils ( bought enough to also change the oil in my red car) -old oil came out dark brown nearly black - new oil is clear with appearance/consistency of Johnsons Baby shampoo👶-this is at mileage 112,000-1st change from new & after 34 yrs!

Found it a messy job even using my Machine Mart syringe-oil drips everywhere -used the small 1litre "make up " bottle to get the measure ( conveniently graduated on the clear side strip in 50cc intervals.

Had previously free'd up the filler plug but not the drain plug , which required a really hefty 2 armed wrench using 1of my breaker handles.Next up the red car-🤔

 
Changed hopefully the last piece of the puzzle to my 3 long year rebuild on my 944 turbo and that was the power steering pipes , to the pump and return .

Bought hydraulic 10mm ID pipe from pirtek and managed to change both as they have always seemed to seap out fluid as they were full of tiny pin holes.

that should be my last job so I can hopefully test drive her after the big engine build and take her for an MOT all being well in a few weeks 🤞

One of the problems with having a fully equipped workshop at home is that other people seem to find lot's of things that you can do for them...ie my son's.... only joking, love them to bits...

Anyway, so this week I've been asked to do some mods to son number 2's Cossie, this is his Escort Cosworth which is in the process of having a complete restoration, the car is already in fresh paint thanks to son number 1...

My son wants 500+ bhp.. well he would, can't think where he gets it from?...:) My job was some machining on the block and the pistons, I just do as he tells me here as this engine is fairly foreign to me although I have done similar work to his other Cossie's in the past. The block required having it's oilways to the head reduced, this was a simple job of turning up some threaded studs from stainless bar(10mm) drill a hole through the centre of 4mm, tap the block's oilways for the studs to be screwed into flush with the top face, I cut a slot to allow this to be done easily using a screwdriver. The idea behind this is to increase the oil around the crank and bore sprayers, evidently, the head gets too much oil in standard trim, or so I'm told. As for the forged pistons, the first job I've done in the past for his other cars, that's to machine semi-holes (6 off equally spaced at 60 degrees and 3mm dia) around the top lip of the first ring groove. The other job was to machine a depression around the piston between the top two rings, this one was new to me but all done now and the engine is now being reassembled.

All this was done while trying to continue to build my own project at the same time having to share both mill and lathe, oh well, the things you do for family...:)

Today was a very speacial day for me, I finally after 3 years of being on high stands in my garden and rebuilding the entire engine myself , got the 944 turbo down onto the ground and drive her for the first time to the MOT station!

she passed with flying colours! .....the best bit was the emissions which to be honest had always been higher than allowed and becuase I have new racing pistons and wet linners along with quite a heavy port and polish job which I decided to do to my head myself, I was veryy on edge to say the least! Your allowed max high of 3.5% on idle and I remember last time mine read something like 4.2 couldn’t believe it when he said “bloody hell its perfect“ it was 1.57% which I’m over the moon with and still cant Believe it, all that hard work has seemed to have paid off.

im now in the running in period which is going to be frustrating but it’s something that needs doing. I have untill May time untill I am booked in with the man himself on the Dyno and tune (Wayne the Wizzard!) which I cant wait for! 😊

That’s really good news dan, think if the weather is good we will try to arrange the first cars cobblers and coffee of 2019 In 3 weeks

 
Can't beat some encouragement like that Dan-well done-my Wife's 924S has tested at 4.5% the last 2 years but I got an MOT (pleaded setting hadn't been touched since purchase & was controlled by ECU)-however this year using Albert Walsh's Hawk analyser ,I reduced it to 3.08 % -required 180 deg anticlockwise turn of the mixture socket screw & no other adjustments were necessary-just runs the same.Car will do 32mpg on long motorway runs

at 78/79 cruising speed.
