What did you do with your 996 today?

I know this topic popped up recently but it appears with a bit of elbow grease you can give faded headlamps an extended life

My Porsche Carrera 4 has faded headlamps, - replacement HID Litronic headlamps being £1,949.55 each :eek:mg: :arrghh:

Yellowy in appearance and when looking at an angle completely hide the projectors and bulbs

So i started with an Autoglym restoration kit ([link=https://www.autoglym.com/headlight-restoration-kit]https://www.autoglym.com/headlight-restoration-kit[/link] that I bought at the classic car show earlier in the year

Having masked the chrome high pressure washer cover it was a brave step to attach an 800 grit sanding disc to my battery drill and apply it - but the replacement costs spurred me on...

followed up with 1500 grit...

It looked bad and i started to wonder why I had done this to my car - didnt even warrant an advisory at a recent MOT..

then i moved on to 2000 grit followed by 3000 grit - there was light at the end of the tunnel (pun intended!)

Finally a foam mop with polishing compound..

A quick buff up with a micro fibre cloth and this was the result..

Whilst not perfect the difference is stunning - need to start the next one now - lunch first tho!!

That is an amazing result , I also have Carrera 4 Gen 2 with an headlight very similar to yours that needs this sort of TLC just need the guts to have a go but the end result is amazing to be honest !!

Went to Simply Porsche at Beaulieu Motor Museum in Hampshire this Sunday. Shame that it clashed with the Club BBQ! Weather was excellent and there was a large turnout of cars. For anyone who hasn't been to a meeting, hopefully here is a link to some photos that will give you a taste of the day.

Good to hear your 996 is performing well!! Have a great time, in a great car. I have had 4 Porsches, 2 Boxsters and 2 996s. All were faultless, and only needed normal maintenance. [:)]

This week saw a major service including diff oil change, coolant, drive belt, plugs, brake fluid etc etc then a quick trip to my local ATS to take advantage of their Groupon air conditioning offer.

I thought the service from ATS was superb and the special offer they have on is great value at £32 as it also includes an anti-bacterial treatment.

On a side note I also took some time to go round my Boxsters black plastics with some of KochChemie NanoMagicPlastCare...... It really works!! the lower windscreen trim looks like new and pleasingly, after 2 washes, still looks just as good, thank heavens, finally a plastic treatment that works and keeps blacks looking black.

Treated the car to a full major service and check over at JGC Porsche Specialist in Brackley. New plugs, brake fluid change, Mobil 1 etc. Courtesy car. Almost a clean bill of health - some coil pack corrosion described as a 2 out of 10, where 10 was the worst - however for 116k miles and driven in all weathers this is pretty good and the car continues to impress. James who runs JGC took photos to keep on file to monitor the situation at the next service and he impressed me with his knowledge and attention to detail. JGC came recommended to me by another POCGB member and now I can see why. This car still amazes me and gives me so much pleasure to drive!

Coolant change, got all 23 litres out and back in thanks too the guide over on rennlist

Much simpler way of doing it.

Changed the radiator fan ballast resistors (green can type) and cleaned out the radiators.

While in there I noticed that the O/S AC condenser had rotted at the bottom, the AC still worked but it needed to be changed, so I changed the condenser. Really easy job, but you do have to get the car de-gassed before you start.

Not the best weekend to have disconnected the AC.

I'll get it re-gassed this week as part of the annual service.

Guys, what did i do with my 996 C4s? I put it up for sale :(

Sad times indeed - I love this car!

Hi , I have booked my 996 c2 2003 in with my local Indy to have the ims upgrade done and the rms , along with a new AOS and tiptronic gearbox service , the car runs absolutely fine and I've never had any issues with it but I'm just being cautious as I intend to keep it for the long haul , I've gone for the eps cylindrical bearing as this was recommended to me by my Indy as he says it is a "permanent " fix. So my question is has anyone else had this bearing fitted and if so would appreciate any feedback any thanks Gary.

Hi Gary ive just recently changed my its and rms in my c4s tip along with various other things while i had the engine and box out. i went for the ims solution oil fed bearing this is the only life time fix that ive read about and believe i did loads of reading and seeing reviews on the net. my old ims was single row and was fine with 48k on it. The main reason i changed it for the solution was for my own piece of mind seeing as i want a keeper also if times ever bad its a bonus for the resale of the car. Theres a few reasons while the bearings go as i read it. lack of oil changes, cars that stand around in garages and not used. Also the actual intermediate shaft design?. If your indy is telling you its a life fix what certification is he prepared to give or guarantee i bet the answer will be none. look at the solution and read about there guarantee. Choose wisely and don't listen to your pocket its a porsche.

Hi thanks for the speedy reply !! I believe the eps bearing is an oilfed bearing and it comes with a 2year warranty , and they claim that it's a permanent fix if you go on their website, the Indy sent me the link so I could read up about it myself so I hope it's ok ?

Took the car to Brands Hatch yesterday where they had a Deutsche fest event.

There weren't very many Porsches there, mostly BMW's and VW's.

It was a great day all the same, plenty of action on the track and plenty to see off it.

The Paul Swift stunt show involved a superb Porsche display was well worth seeing.

Took my car onto the track for a 15 minute taster session later in the day. Never again!!!

On the first lap, an Audi TT in front of me, spun off into the gravel forcing me to break hard as it bounced back off the tyre padding toward the track, a quick glance in the rear mirror as I breaked hard revealed a VW spinning 360 degrees about 5 feet from my car. I was very, very lucky!!

Thoroughly enjoyed the day though.

Gerry

Hi , I've just had my ims bearing replaced and a new rms on my 996 c2 coupe 2003 allong with a few other jobs while the engine and tiptronic gearbox was out !! And just to let anyone know who's interested my car has done 95k and the bear was in perf condition 👍👍so don't believe all you read about these cars 😉😉

Hi there ,so you had the ims and yours is a tip , I was going to have mine done , but was quoted £2000 plus any extras ,an I thought , no I'm not lol , my car is a 1999 c4 cab and it's done 70,000 , it's had a service every 2,000 miles oil change filters gearbox oil , the lot , I love the car and would have liked to have done the bloody ims , but the engine has to come out on the tiptronic models, and t thought this is too much of a trauma for my old classic car lol , i laughed when you said the old ims was ok , but you just never know do you ,you have peace of mind now though .

Anyway bloody great cars I love mine as I'm sure you do , happy porsche driving mate .

all the best

frank .
