I've been self-employed for 14 years now. I'd hate to ever have to go back to a proper job.. I usually try and avoid telling people what I do as when I say "Information Security and Business Continuity consulting" they either look blank, or ask me about computer viruses.. Software architect. Which means I spend part of my time designing software systems, a lot of time telling programmers "yes that will work", more time writing prototypes to prove to programmers "see it works", yet more time showing customers it does what they asked, and finally more time telling programmers "it doesn't do what the customer wants because you didn't do it the way I asked".

I am currently a secondary school teacher but will starting a new position at a prep school as Head of department in September
I'm a system architect. I work for a company in Cambridge that designs microchips, figuring out what needs to be built and how to do it. It's not just buildings that need architects you know!! Bizarrely, I acquire and sell care homes on behalf of people. Based within a specialist surveying practice. Small world !ORIGINAL: aporschefan I'll go next. I was an IT project manager but left that field 4-5 years ago. I now own and run a group of nursing homes for the elderly. 3 of them specialise in Dementia care. They're based in the midlands and one is in the south. Which is why I spend a lot of my time on the motorway. If it's care for the elderly you want to know about, I'm your man.

Small world indeed. Might look you if I want to expand further. Feel free to email me if you like. (I might look to sell one in the next couple of years.)

I am a Quantity Surveyor - if you need some bricks counting then I am your man !
I've been working as an electrical engineer for the last 10 years - working within automotive manufacture. Work with all sorts of CNC & automation/measuring machines. Keep thinking about moving on to somewhere where engineering is more important than counting beans, but the grass isn't always greener!! So if you an electrical problem with some machinery, I could be your man!!
I retired from running a management consultancy three years ago, but found that retirement was boring so set up a letting agency. The agency has now grown significantly and takes a reasonable amount of my time. I also work for a church - looking after their property portfolio, funnily enough! So, if you want any advice on property management and lettings (or have a property you want to let out in E3 or E14) then drop me a line! [] Oli.
CNC's, robots, measuring, general automation - sure...........Maserati's......maybe not, lol!! Having said that I have dabbled with automotive electrics over the years, the principals are all similar - but usually, machine tools are far easier to work on due to having better access and good documentation! Have you added some pics of said Maserati's to the 'other cars' thread??ORIGINAL: Ewan Hallsy - given that I have a collection of Maserati's, I always have electrical problems with my machinery!

Engineering Support (Electrical and Instrument Biased) means i get involved in major breakdowns, wade through reams of paperwork, organise and look afer specialist contractors amognst other things (Nuclear Sector) Currently awaiting word back from a position as a Construction Engineer (Nuclear Sector) i have been offered a position in new build pre operations engineering but i need a suitable replacement in position before being released from my present role, which is easier said than done (experience and security clearance status) I would jack it in and go as a contractor and chase the big money but i am on a final salary pension which is probably one of the best in the UK so short term gain only (8 years to do)
