Where have the exotic 944 projects gone???

As above it seems like ages since I heard anything about any mad scientist projects!

Rick and Paul seem to be content with level of lunacy they have achieved and have now stopped thinking and talking about modifying because they are too busy enjoying driving their cars.

I heard all sorts of exciting rumours about 3.0 projects and big power cars back in January and suddenly they've all gone quiet. I need something to get my blood going again something to revive the 944 spirit and evoke some excitement on the forum...

New news anyone...

Regards,

Ben

Here's what I know about the big power UK cars:

Nicks 968 Turbo is up, running and being finetuned on the Motec
Hartechs 3L 951 should be up and running by now
Your engine is finished but not in the car yet, awaiting a Vitesse MAF
Tommos 3L was finished but I'm unsure of its current status
There is another 3.2 being built now (I've swapped emails with the owner but he's not on here)
Mark K's 400bhp monster has been improved since last year
Ricks 400 bhp monster has enjoyed a period of stability
John Dalys 422bhp monster is in Ireland, has had a respray but not been to the R.O.T yet
Mine is visiting the R.O.T in one hour to get some figures at 18psi

You kept that quiet you miserable little devil. We might have all come along to shout words of encouragement otherwise.

Snap decision :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: (brought about by a 3rd party)

Well I'm back from the dyno and..........

........Rick is still king (just) [8|]

Scans will follow but the headline news is that I wasn't running at 18psi but was at 17psi according to the Weltmeister sensor - arrrg []. The good news was I did hold it to the redline, and this yielded 393bhp and 480lbft Torque, a very nice increase from 337/420 at 15psi.

The torque is still dropping off a bit and Jon is confident this is because we are still running with a virtually standard ignition curve. When she goes in for her 6k servive next month they will be tuning the ignition timing and I had better get a new G-Force suit [:D] (and clean unders [])

ahhh MUCH better [:D] thankyou Paul. I am now satisfied! 393...could you not have just upped the boost 0.5psi to tip the scales and get over the big 400hp mark whilst you were there!! Now you'll have to wait till the next Dyno day for your hat! But still very impressive figures on a standard exhaust, intake etc etc and at only 17psi!

Well done again Jon / Paul. Have fun Paul I'm insanely jealous!

Regards,

Ben

Here are todays Dyno Charts fresh off the scanner, hope they're exotic enough for you Ben [:)]

Oddly the boost seems to be coming on a little slower (maybe 100rpm) than it did back when I had the AFM still installed, but at least it can hold a steady level now after a small spike

Fantastic result Paul! You must be dead chuffed.

As a turbo charging numpty can anyone remind me what boost Rick runs to get his figures?

Best regards,
Peter

Superb result Paul and i'm impressed with the stability of your AFR plot, just goes to show how good the Vittesse piggy back system is. With so many cars achieving around the 400 bhp mark by very very different methods it would be interesting to study the results to see what the subtle differences in the way they all deliver their power and torque are between all the different solutions.

Well done as usual Paul!!

Much more to come... ignition tweaks will give you a boost in bhp and maybe a tiny bit of torque, exhaust would transform the car without making it track unfriendly.

The interesting thing is from this project, we have shown just how far you can push the standard exhaust, intake manifold and a number of other components. They are holding you back, but we have demonstrated that they cause a loss as a percentage not as a hard bhp cut off figure as some would have you think.

I think we have also proved the benefit of a "proper" ballrace turbo being able to produce low down boost which can maintain all the way to the red line.

Your breathers also need to be reconfigured.. will not gain you any power, but will just cure the last niggles.

1psi of boost would on its own get you a hat at the next dyno day on its own.

Put all this together and its anyones guess what the gains will be.. but it will be interesting!

Paul,
I do plan on getting the car on the R.O.T hopefully sometime later this year, If I can hit the 400bhp mark at the R,.O.T I'll be well pleased

.

BTW, Your car is just awesome - TORQUE MONSTER!

^^^ So who's going to get the first 500hp hat then! Should we have a 'TOP HAT most powerful UK944' hat for the car at spot no. 1 and a 'TORQUE MONSTER most muscle bound UK944' or would that encourage unconstructive competition?

ps should there be a top tuner hat to encourage technological competition? I think we should have a track afternoon once a year for all the Porsche tuners to demonstrate their products for competing lap times like they have the tuner battles in Japan. We could encourage the 911 nuts like 9ff etc to join in and turn it into a big event?? It would be great to see modified 944's running in competition with modified 911's on a track. I bet you could draw quite a croud too if it were advertised in magazines etc. Could be quite an advertisement for the marque and a money earner for the club?

I have a patent on a "Gearbox Guard" for 951's.[8D]

It is specially designed to contain all the circlips, selectors and gear-teeth as they explode. I would recommend safety glasses for the spectators on the start/finish straight as some shrapnel may escape......[:D]. Dust masks may be prudent if the gearbox holds as the clutch is sure to be dusted......[:)] Failing that the tyre smoke will take hours to clear.

But its a GREAT idea, - can some-one get 500 on the ROT from a 951? Then get a time for the 'ring which is really impressive?

You mention 9ff Ben, I read somewhere of a twin turbo 4 cyl water cooled 3.0L they built in a 951 for a special customer, but dont know any details.

I've seen photo's of the 9ff twin turbo car and it looks awsome though i've not heard about it running yet. The turbos were mounted on the exhaust manifold side of the engine with the engine rotated round so the cylinder head was up vertical to create the space. There was a huge hole in the bonnet due to half the engine sticking out and they hadn't quite sussed out how they were going to mod the bonnet to cover it. There are photo's on this forum somewhere if you care to search.

This line reminds me of the wonderful time in F1 during my early youth when I used to sit down every weekend to watch toxic jelly fuelled, flame spitting monsters running almost 6bar boost pressures, driven by total lunatics like Senna, leaving black lines the entire length of the track!

A different dimention to the mind numbingly dull Scalectrix line driving on TV today!

hmmm 1.5ltr turbo's running 1500hp under stringent regulations... I wonder what a 3.0 944 turbo could run on condensed fuel??

Regards,

Ben

Nice going there Paul and Jon. There is still so much potential left in Lil that 400hp or near enough is great at this stage but there is definitely more to come on her!
There are quite a few projects running or nearing completion internationally that will push our cars way beyond what we are used to. The biggest project will be Evil 944t's attempt at 1000hp!! This will happen probably within a month and whether he makes it or not, he will provide some big numbers and get a lot of useful info from it. There are also quite a few northern European guys with some pretty modified cars which will have in excess of 500hp and one or two down here that will be pushing those numbers with a bit of luck.
So don't despair Ben, there are still lots of cars out there to be inspired by.
