Where have the exotic 944 projects gone???

ORIGINAL: SimonP

At the moment the car has no dash fitted, during its life it had been fitted with no less than FOUR alarm systems!
Reminds me of my last Golf - Mk2 8v GTi. I think that had 3 alarms and 3 immobilisers (or remnants of) when I purchased it. Not to mention a ghastly 'Hi Fi' (innit) installation.

I reckoned I removed over 3km of cable from that car one warm May Saturday ...

No upset 333. After all I am an Aussie and Sydney is my hometown. I was navigating like any woman when I collided with this thread. Thanks for letting me in briefly you were all very kind.

Hi Carol. Well you'll get good advice from the guys in here so check in for good tidbits. Sydney seems to be changing all the time and while it's still a great city, it is becoming more like some OS destinations with the traffic etc. Good luck with the rust issue!

PS Simon, that loom looks SCARY!! What sort of power to weight are you expecting from the new beast? Are you sticking to metal panels? Paul you sound sort of optimistic about Lils imminent return. Is this based on more than just 'a good feeling'???

Well I don't know about imminent, there is a lot of work involved whatever happens. I spoke to Jon yesterday and it has been confirmed that LIL is repairable and cosmetically would need a front wing, a door and a rear quarter panel. The sill is a bit crumpled but basically sound and repairable as is - man these cars are built strong. Mechanically it looks like the only damage is the steering rack is bent, though it may be wise to replace the passenger side alloy wishbone. I have a ballpark figure for the labour and paint and though expensive, it is at the lower end of what I really hoped it would be. We just have to get a price for the panels so I know the total. If I do go down this route I would want to get a new wing and rear quarter from Porsche (for the obvious rust reasons of S/H) but would be happy with a S/H door which Jon already has.

The alternative (and far cheaper) solution is to stop messing about and go straight for an out and out track car using a spare shell that Jon has. Transplant the 3.2 and running gear into the shell, fit a half cage and bucket seats and I'm good to go. When the engine is out it may be opportune to fit a 3" downpipe and exhaust at the same time [;)]. Heck we even talked about a lightweight bonnet and maybe fit the widebody carbon/kevlar rear quarters from GT Racing so we can fit some 11" rear wheels at the back []

.....but lets not get carried away [;)]

Paul,

That's not getting carried away, it's (as you yourself said) a wise, money-saving option.

You know it makes sense. No, really.

Hi Paul,
Good to hear that a plan is starting to come together.

If it helps I have a spare low mileage nearside M030 wishbone which I'll let go at a really good price to you (cost circa £400, and I think was on the car for about a year [:(]).
Best regards,
Peter

Good news Paul, I've just come back from a holiday in Cornwall today and did wonder how you were getting on during my homeward bound 5hr slog up the motorway. The thought of the potential of a lightened dedicated track LIL is truly mind blowing but with her being in such good nick it somehow seems a shame to tear her apart. I for one hope to see her restored to her former glory with a few improvements under the skin of course!

Some interesting parallels being considered in the UK and Australia. We have just taken upon ourselves to build a track only car and purchased a very clean '91 S2 lhd. We haven't drawn up a battle plan but I have been investigating some widebody stuff from various vendors and have a thread going on Rennlist a.t.m. that has some nice pics of widebodied cars. The bottom line is that there seems to be an underlying issue with GT panels fit and finish and while they have an extensive catalogue, there are others out there that sound better. I am now deciding which boxes to tick for the new motor as well. 3.4 16v d/sump has a ring to it, but that may also be the ring of the cash register too. Ah, you only live once sort of thing.[:D][:D][:D]
Keep us posted Paul.
