Hello - I am not sure I am in the right place but I have just had some really bad news. Porsche Guildford have just told me the chassis on my 1990 H reg 944 s2 cab is suffering from structural rust. I need to discover who is the best person to take a look, what the costs would be to have the car evaluated/necessary work done. Can anyone make any recommendations? I am based in Hampshire. HELP.

So sad, I got my black leather sports seats from a turbo that was broken up for this reason.

Hi Carol,
You are in the right place!
You would have seen in the last couple of Porsche Posts my requests for details of the corrosion on the cars, and it's not good news, particularly for the S2 and turbos.....[]
The rust does seem to spread from the rear cill into the suspension mountings, about half of the cases reported to me had only found the rust when the mot failure meant it had got this far! It is repairable. As always, you could bodge it to pass the mot, but it will be back. A proper repair is not going to be cheap, but should last at least as long as the original parts and, if protected, even longer. Of course, you have to weigh up the condition of the rest of the car, and how long you want to keep it, before comitting what will be a large sum to a decent repair.
Regarding finding a local bodyshop, try your Region as they may have a recommendation. I can't see why any decent bodyshop would have a problem, so asking around your local friends, neighbours, garages etc. should find someone.
Good luck, and let us know how you get on!

I feel heartened by your responses. Thank you. I fear it is probably all you say. Perhaps it will have to be an incremental rebuild as parting company does not bear thinking about. I am still reeling from the shock but if anyone can recommend someone who has the skills and enthusiasm to take the old girl on - the car that is- then your input is appreciated. x Carol
Not sure if this qualifies for exotic 944 projects though. lol. Actually while I'm here, why is the S2 any more prone to rust than other members of the family? I'm actually looking at one for a project car but we think it's out of Japan. Any obvious signs to the naked eye or where it's most predominant?
Thanks

True but as it was Carols first post and we are really gentle moderators we might as well leave it here as opposed to starting a new thread []
We have a pet theory that the S2 and Turbo are more prone to rusty sills because of the black plastic trim underneath the sills. This is prone to collecting mud, salt and gunk which starts off the process that ultimatley leads to the rear suspension [] The earlier cars don't have this trim and seem to fare slightly better
Absolutely no malice intended to Carol. Hope you can remedy your situation.
As for new projects, I am still getting my 3L up and running in about 2-3 weeks which should be good for 450hp+ pretty comfortably. Waiting on this car to be done over many months of seemingly endless frustration has given me enough impetus to have a 2nd engine built as a backup. As it turns out this is now turning into something a bit special which will render 450hp+ a laughing matter...stay tuned. Should be 2-3 months away.

Well, that will be my aim, however, it depends on what takes up my time in between.
I am building the engine at the moment, a 2.5l with nickasil type bores and it will have the prototype all-Garrett ball bearing turbo, should be a nice package similar to my last 'torquemeister' car!
At the moment the car has no dash fitted, during its life it had been fitted with no less than FOUR alarm systems! As I was removing them I noticed a couple of wires with the insulation melted off in the main loom, from below the fusebox which runs up over the heater A/C unit and to the column area, I couldn't risk leaving them in the loom in case they shorted out some other supply, so bit the bullet and dissassembled the loom and replaced the two offending wires with correctly colour coded wires. nice....
I figured I would leave the dash out until the engine is installed and running so if I have any wiring issues everything is still open to facilitate fault finding.
Engine should be finished next week (famous last words) and then the car needs a couple of weeks to finish off, has still got an MOT, needs tax, running in etc. etc....
I am looking forward to having a 944 on the road again though, have been driving a 996 lately which is nice but somehow 'different'

Hope its as good as your last 'Torquemeister' which is going really well - done 1750 miles in 18 outings, getting some fantastic outings (religiously warming up & cooling down) its a real treat to drive. Are you going to use the new one yourself, or is some lucky person going to have the pleasure of ownership?
Clive

Get it to Silverstone for one of the Goldtrack evenings [] plenty of 944s will be there
p.s your first picture seems to be leaning a bit, maybe an alignment is in order
