Widow Maker!

Thanks for the update Clive, that is one gorgeous car!!!

What tracks have you taken it on, I presume you must have a lot of driving experience as I am sure it would scare the sh*t out of me on track!!!

Have a friend who has a 996 GT2 and he never gets time to do anything with it as he races a mad pick up thing designed for ovals and circuits ( one set up for each) and hence spends most weekends off doing that!!

I did ask him if he wanted me to look after the GT2 but he didn't seem keen!!

Great follow up Clive [:)]

I have to add the noise the GT2 makes is totally intoxicating, we had plenty of tunnels to play in whist in Europe and I'm sure the majority were giggling like naughty boys and girls whilst in those tunnels.

Some thing more to add, something that Clive doesn't get to see is how awesome the rear wing looks on the car, whilst I know spoilers aren't to everyones taste (especially the press) the GT2 on the move looks totally different to any other model, the spoiler almost makes the car look to have a lower roofline.. absolutely stunning :p

Today I am a little sad as it's probably the last time I will drive my beautiful 997 GT2. I have work down the coast that provides me with an opportunity for an 80 mile round trip on a quiet, sweeping road. It's a pleasant day and the weather has remained dry here for quite a while, so the surfaces should be clean. Time to fire up the Porsche! Later this week, it's being delivered to my OPC for a New Year Showroom display. Next month it's up for sale.

I have been a loyal Porsche owner for 30 years but shortly I am defecting to another marque. Ever since I was a little boy I've been fascinated by the "˜F' word (the one with 3 syllables). I've come close to buying an "˜F' several times during my adult life but could never quite bring myself to conclude a deal. This time it's come about partly by accident and partly by design.

I intended the GT2 as a keeper, placing my order at the earliest possible time. There followed a 6 month frustrating wait, culminating in much confusion over customer allocation and uncertainty as to when or even if I would get one. At the peak of all this kafuffle, the nice man across the road at F told me he'd be delighted to sell me their latest offering and, what's more, he could guarantee delivery. I slapped down my deposit and whatdoyaknow? - 2 days later my GT2 allocation came through! (???)

All this took place at a time when desirable motor car waiting lists were long and some cars were attracting large premiums. I reasoned I could enjoy my Porsche until my F arrived and get my money back - even perhaps with a small premium. The best laid plans etc. eh?"¦"¦.How times have changed.

I'm excited by the prospects of my new motor but also a little nervous. Over the years, I've taken for granted Porsche's engineering expertise, reliability, high standards of finish and (comparatively) low running costs. Chances are I am likely to be disappointed in one or maybe all of these aspects with my new manufacturer, Long term, I may well return to Porsche once this thing is out of my system. A 998 TT with PDK looks a pretty attractive piece of kit - my letter of intent is already in!

I have just renewed my POCGB membership as I'm still eligible at present. Hopefully I can continue as an associate member for the remainder of the year. Perhaps I can contribute to the forum periodically with observations from the dark side!

Judy and I have made some good friends here and I very much hope we can keep in touch. This is a good club, a great forum and a wonderfully run 997 register. I doubt there is the same level of fellowship and camaraderie anywhere else.

I count myself extremely fortunate to have an opportunity to own and drive two of the best and most sought-after sports super cars in the world, prior to senility finally setting in. It's a great adventure and a brand new experience (which at my age is a rare event indeed!).

Regards, a Happy New Year and great 2009 motoring for us all

Clive

Clive, super words as always [:)]

I can only wish the F word does give you that thing you're looking for, (I know it does the same for me) and I can't think of a single person who would not wish you all the happiness with the beast. [8D]

I think you know you and Judy are more than welcome to come to our events, I hope you do so I can a least rib you about the Italian crap you're buying (doh! did I say that out loud[;)] ) I mean to see the new motor.

As you say, how times change and timings couldn't of been worse, but the fact you're still doing the dream I give you 100% credit

Certainly for you then.. A happy New Year

It'll be a fantastic opportunity for us to hear first hand the realities of ownership of two of the greatest road cars available. Once again today I was reminded that for all the hype and opinion given to us by motoring journalists, their conclusions are reached on a very limited driving experience - a few hours at launch and maybe a couple of days for a full test. I look forward to your first epistle...

Happy New Year Clive and Judy.

Clive, sorry to lose you!

I wish you more luck than this poor Ferrari owner: http://www.rennteam.com/forum/thread/20071021/Sad_story_of_a_Ferrari_Owner/page1.html

Thanks for your kind wishes, guys. This is what's so great about this club. [:)]

Alex, I don't think you'll be getting rid of me completely due to Gary's kind invitiation to join you on occasional trips, mainly so I can become a focus of ridicule (takes the pressure off him, see)! [&:]

Judy and I would be particularly interested in another foreign trip as this was thoroughly enjoyable and a rip-roaring success last year. [;)]

As regards the F bad vibes, I'm sure there are as many stories over badly behaved Porsches (and their dealers) as there are for F's.

I recall Porsche were none too keen on my participating in a local Sprint event at Chivenor with my new Turbo a few years ago. I eventually competed with German number plates fitted - just in case - and had to bolt when the local TV station headed my way for an interview!

These cars are made to be driven so I really don't understand why track use is such a big deal. [:'(]

Incidentially, F's now come with a 4 year manufacturer's warranty- something that Porsche should also have adopted long ago. []

Hope to meet up for a few laughs in the coming year.[:D]

Best wishes and kind regards,
Clive

4 years warranty !! and manufacturers too [8D].. thats salt to wounds after the Porsche costs going up so significantly.

Plans are underway for a Normandy D-day trip.
A Possible German Tour, King and Castles but I was looking at South East Spain, this was spurred on even more by EVO magazine this month :p

Just depends which route offers the most tunnels I suppose..[:D]

I do seem to remember the track day issue happening within Porsche, mainly over the Mk1 ceramic brakes

Gary,
How about a run around the Mille Miglia course? I'd certainly go for that one! [;)] [:)]

Yes that does sound good and Chris likes Italy too. Fuel prices are already down on last year but it would be nice if the Euro dropped a little beforehand. Having watched the recent TV programme I've been day dreaming about an MG A type restoration project.

We couldn't get enough people prepared to pay for the Welsh circuit, let alone the Ascari... but yes please [;)]

Italy and the lakes may be the year following, especially now we have a contact with an Italian car maker [:D] [;)] (psst thats you Clive[;)])
I'm worried though that we may have to cross some of those god damn Swiss passes to get there though [][8|]

Many of the wonderful views and towns of the Millie are closed to traffic away from the race... timings eh [;)]

Anyone is welcome to plan or organise a trip for the register, Rob and myself welcome it.
Like Allan says, the Euro is not our friend at the moment [:(] and makes a big difference to costs.

Just recounted this story to my youngest - he asked if you also had a false moustache and put on a German accent - competing as Mr Hilter no doubt[:D].

Just to remind Clive how much He enjoyed the GT2 along with us all..

Well done to Clive for a great Article in this months Porsche Post, all about the best and his experience [8D]

You're very kind, Gary.

But what really made the article were the stunning photos taken by your good lady, Jo, on the Interlaken trip .

I've made a note to share any royalties with her! :ROFLMAO:

Regards,

Clive
