Winter Projects anyone???

Guest

Just wondering if anyone has any interesting winter projects planned. A nice little 993RS engine swap maybe, big brakes, new suspension, backdate to 73RS??? Speaking of which, can anyone believe the price Autofarm are asking for their "Autofarm RSs" based on 3.2s and appearing in every car mag in the country of late - £65k+ !!! Are they using solid gold bolts?

I am going to get a set of 16x7/8 wheels refinished in RSR pattern and hope to lose a little more weight from the car - rear wiper, a bit of sound deadening, who knows what else may be ditched in the quest for lightweight. Has anyone used an Optima battery on a car that isn't driven much? If Santa is very generous I might treat the car to a new clutch and "while I am in there" look at a lighter flywheel and short 3rd and 4th gears - but somehow I don't think Santa will be that generous [].

Anyhow, RSR wheel picture attached.

Richard,
Due to the youngster in the family, I'm still trying to get my spring fettling jobs done!!! The cars going in for SSI's in the next couple of weeks, really not a job I fancy tackling myself !! Other than that, I've still got the super blue and braded hoses waiting in the corner of the office. I'm just about to start a new job and will have access to a VaciBlast, this is a blast cleaner (very mildly abrasive) thats used for clearing gas turbine components....... should work wonders to a cooling fan and shroud!! [;)] I'll take some piccies as I get on with the jobs and post them on here.

BTW, those RSR style wheels really look the nuts!

Cheers

When I converted to the 964 look on my SC I also ditched the spare wheel in the search to shed kilos, even without rebalancing the car as I still have a lot of suspension work to do, it transformed an already good handling car. It's now very 'pointy' without lurching into any form of oversteer, so if you haven't already buy some 'get you home' tyre goo and take a drive minus all that weight up front. Lose the jack and all the other paraphanalia too except for bulbs, fuses, oil, spark plugs and a spare fan belt and shims (plus the few necessary tools). Hang onto the spare though.
Here's two or three other things you mught like to try. Recently I fitted relays to the headlights, cleaned the inside of the headlight lense and put in Osram uprated bulbs (still 65-55W though) . What a difference, hardly comparable to a current set up but way better then stock. I've also fitted the latest available LED wedge bulbs to the instruments and they are a vast improvement over the yellowy stock lights I had with my white dial faced clocks.
One mod I'm looking forward to doing is reversing the wipers to give a little more visibility out of the drivers seat. I sit very low as my spine compresses more than your average person so every inch helps. If you sit in the passenger seat as an experiment that is the lovely uncluttered view you will then be getting.

Richard,

I'm with Phil - the house extension has relegated the poor old Porsche somewhat down the priority list these last few months. However, there is light at the end of 'decorating' tunnel, and over the winter I have a set of 8X16 Fuchs to refurbish (see earlier posts for ideas on colours etc.), whilst braided lines, fluid and pads are already waiting on the shelf. I also have the relays referred to by Bones to fit (just await my questions when I get in to it as electrics really are not me). Finally, I still intend doing a suspension refurb / upgrade for next year, but that become next winter if things get delayed, as I want to make good use of the car during the spring and summer. Will post pics etc. as I progress.

Richard

Please post piccys of those RSR finished rims as soon as you can...they look REALLY good! Is the centre finish actually rough to the touch?

BTW all of you who have removed the spare, what make of tyre "goo" are you using? I wanted to buy the same tyre repair kit as the one fitted to the latest GT2/3 (no spare tyre supplied) cars but am unable to source a part number for it. Any ideas? Do you still need the compressor when using these "goos", as my cigarette lighter socket doesn't work (fuse is OK), so my compressor is pretty useless too.

The Optima battery route sounds good. Most people recommend the #34 Red Top version, but it appears that the fitting kit needs to be ordered from the states, along with a lengthened ground cable.

I must also get the bumpers, sills and valances refurbed this year...I've been putting it off for the last two years.

Cheers

Anil

My decorating is over for the year...probably until March....

A couple or three projects lined up......

'86+ rear reflector and fog lights to clear up the back end.

fitting a indie central locking system to reduce wear rate on door handles.

have said door handles refurbed...powder coated??? anyone know who can be trusted with this?

Lots of good ideas here.

Phil,
Were are you getting the SSIs from and how? The UK sticked price always puts me off compared the US price - it seems to equate to double.

Bones,
Where did you get the relays and the LEDs? Are there "how to" instructions? I am very electrically challenged and would need good instructions! I need to replace a seal round one headlight so this is a timely reminder and a good "while you are in there" project.

Ian,
I really think Silver centres with silver Carrera stripes would look fan-bloody-tastic.

Anil,
I can't drop them off until (earliest) end of November. It then takes 3 weeks to have them completed, so this is a post Xmas completion date. The price is also scary - I will post details when done - as they are completely re-anodised. Thanks for the tip on the Optima, do you know who supplies them in the UK? BTW, yes, you need the compressor if you have lost more then a little air. I have two cans of Halfords goo in the car but suspect the local Porsche dealer will ave the Porsche goo.

Alan,
Have you thought of colour coded 993 handles?

ciao,
Richard

I fitted the relays in 30 mins , the instructions are excellent , you need to be able to solder and you will probably need a few electrical connectors.

The leds I bought on ebay

You can buy direct if you email him. You will need wedge bulb holders I haven't found a source yet although they may be available here.

Look for wedge bulbs '..........74 LED bulb........'

I reversed the wipers last year, only problem is, that when the screen is slightly wet, or there is a slight
drizzle, the water runs off the leading edge of the blades, leaving a couple of tiny rivers right in front
of where you look out of the screen.

I changed it back as soon as I could.

Richard,
The SSI's are in from the states along with a suitable back box, when I was going to get the job done earlier in the year(had to stall due to job uncertainties) we were looking at about £1k fitted inc. new oil line and heater mods.
At the time I got offered a pair of SSI's by Bert Gear for £600 which I thought was really good, Watsons advertise them at £450 per side!!
I'll keep you posted with the progress.

Hi all

Well with new baby due any day now[:D] and an extension to the house to think about [:(]i am going to be busy enough but going to try a few things to spruce the car up.
The front bumper is seriously stone chipped and also is corroding round the edges of the bellows, also the rear has the same problem at the bellows and some of the trim. The wheels have some corrosion under the lacquer so going to get the rims diamond cut and the centre's powder coated satin black. i was also like Alan thinking of updating the rear reflector to incorporate the ugly fog lamps. Where would be the best source for the parts?
And also work out why the interior lights dont work with the doors. They work when you switch them on to constant but when in the position for them to come on when you open the doors then nothing.

Cheers all

Dave

I won't be defeated by that I'll think of a soulution when I get round to it and let you know, perhaps I won't drive in the rain!?

Nice thread here Richard.

Dave,

I changed my 86 rear reflector to the integrated fog light version, and it is a good visual improvement to the rear of the car. Got the part off ebay. Your need to mod it slightly to fit, but PCT did it for me whilst doing a service last year.

As for bumpers, how about a nice set of IROC / RUF style bumpers - lots on Pelican, just search for iroc bumpers - there are loads of pictures - not sure where or if you can get them over here though.

Richard,

Cannot afford to spend too much on the wheels (cost enough to buy in the first place!), but a local firm will powder coat or two pack the centres and polish the rims. Will probably go for blue centres to match my existing fronts. Cheapest option for now, but will still look good.

Heres the rear bumper as could not post above...

Bones,

The statement "you will probably need a few electrical connectors" is what concerns me, as I have none.

Any idea what I should source before the soldering etc. or do I need to look att he wiring first and then try to decide.

I am really challenged when it comes to electrics, and quite strangely think my lights are actually quite good already - just hope they don't already have relays - in which case someone can have my new kit.

You may not need the connectors , I was being a bit fussy and replaced a dodgy looking ground connector as I wanted to connect the earth from the relays to it insted of screwing a self - tapper into the inner wing. That was the only connector I used , a large ring type one. It really is very easy but read the instructions through and if you don't feel up to up put out a post for a Porsche buddy in your area.

Ian,

I have been thinking about RUF style bumpers for a while now, really
like that clean look. Followed the pelican threads closely and from what i can gather there is a company called MA Shaw in the states that are very good quality and they do front and rear RUF style bumpers for $750 for both. E mailed them bout a month back regards shipping costs but no reply.
Oh and i also don't think the stock headlights are not too bad but if the results are impressive then may be another job for the future

Cheers

Dave

Richard / Ian,
I'm right with you on the electrics front, what is it about the damn stuff, I look at a wiring loom or electrical diagram and start to shudder. It might just aswell be a bowl of blue string pudding for all the sense it makes to me!! Having said that, I did manage to get my central locking working last winter, I had a grin like a Cheshire cat for days[:D]

I think they should do electrical diagrams that look like the layout in the car, I might have some chance of finding that illusive green, pink and black striped wire then ...LOL I still can't believe I managed to get a degree in engineering, mechanical I might add!
