Winter projects begin

Hi,

Well my C2 is in for the first lot of "enhancements". Good time of year to get it done really.

First priority is the bodywork. Some minor corrosion needs attention as well as stone chips on the bonnet and front bumper (as well as some scrapes etc). I am getting the front resprayed given the work involved. Car dropped off Saturday

My MOT expires on 19th Feb so the car will go straight to RPM Technik for MOT, fitting of KWV3's and new front discs and pads (currently weighing a brake upgrade or just standard replacement). I am also going to get a leakdown done and assess "current state" of engine given its 90k mileage (it does leak a bit of oil and has no history of top end work). Am hoping its good for another 30-40k miles anyway [;)]

Credit card is going to get a hammering!! [:(] but should be just how I want it for spring/summer 2011.

Rgds,

AC

Nice one Andrew.. RPM have been doing the servicing and other requests for me over the last couple of years. I get on really well with Ollie and Darren and often a quick Saturday morning drop-off ends up being a 2 hour hang-out with the guys with an 'Ollie Tour' of latest projects and motors just in! Who's doing your bodywork touch ups'? Marcus

Hi Marcus, Yeah I like the guys there as well. Very easy to get along with. Good workmanship. Reasonable prices. Ollie is a big fan of the 964. Bodywork is being done by Daytona Coachworx in Hertfordshire. I will post some photos as they come through. AC

Agree totally.. Indeed, definitely get some photos out of your 'project' before/during/after if possible. Out of interest, where are your minor corrosion areas? Wondering if they are in the usual areas of front and rear screen bases. I know there is a small section piece you can get specifically to replace a (corroded) area cut out from the base of the windscreen. Not sure who does these though. Your brake upgrade sounds interesting too. My rear discs were marked down in the MOT as a potential replacement requirement in the next year or two. Not sure which way to go with this (standard or turbo/993/other) or even if it really makes a huge difference under normal fast road conditions. KW3's.. hmmm.. nice..

Hi Yes there will be a full library of pics for all stages. I want it for the history file primarily. Once he writes up the full job sheet and emails it to me I will let you know the exact areas of work. The brake upgrade will be "hobby funds" dependent but Olly has quote me prices for standard replacement, an interim state, and a full RS spec upgrade. Prices were about Ă‚ÂŁ500 ish (standard) through to Ă‚ÂŁ1900 (RS spec). I think you hit the nail on the head there as I asked the same question - if i pay 2-3 times as much will I feel 2-3 times the difference [:)]. My car is primaril normal/fast road use as well....so i dont think the extravagance is worth it at this pt. Its always something I can do later on down the road. I hear they are the best...... AC

The other thing to bear in mind with a brake upgrade is not just the initial cost but the cost of replacing discs and pads in the future. RS ones are approximately twice the price of standard ones. Have you got 4 pot calipers on the back?

good pt steve and will weigh it up. I will get a view on the current set up first before making a decision as not sure if its anything other than the 4 pot on the back at present.

What I meant was, has it already had the 4 pot upgrade on the back. A 1990 C2 came with 2 pots. Those of us who do a lot of track work have put the 4 pots on (these are standard on the C4 and on the C2 from 1992). They are less prone to overheating and give you a much better choice of pads (the pads are the same size as those used on the front).

Indeed, I meant to say in my reply but forgot to add it in; I have 4-pot calipers on the rear and the upgrade for me I scratch my head over lots sometimes.. I guess the best choice for me is new standard dics and then Pagids or Red Stuff - who knows.. Yes, library pics a good idea, looking forward to it.

Well...small update - car was due an MOT on 19.02...which was concerning me given i didnt want to rush the bodywork. Any - Dave at Daytona Coachworx just ran it down to a local guy he knows and it passed with no advisories!...nice result. This is just exec summary of the work to be remediated....still waiting on the full worksheet as he is finishing up a 928. "Small ding on RHF wing over repeater, slight corrosion blisters at LHS scuttle/LHF wing seam, blisters on RH/LH Cpillar base with sill, blister on rear edge of LHR wing by stoplight lens, stone chips to fronts of front wings and bonnet"

Think I know the owner of the 928 - hope it looks good! Also, another thumbs up for RPM - great guys and love 964s. They run my NGT, which reminds me I need to book a service and MOT with them!

yeah the 928 look good...its gone to black from it looks like a maroon type colour....i am heading there for service and other bits and bobs straight after so might see your car in there if i am lucky

Well...after a couple of week delay work has begun on the bodywork. Initial strip down photos from work yesterday. Enjoy!

Mine had rust in the same place as your pic. It's either a common thing to occur or it's because we both bought our cars from the same previous owner! [:D]

Andrew, Looks like Olly's workshop in the pics - they stripping it down for you then? And which one of the nearby bodyshops are they sending you too? I ask as Darren there has given me a quote for a glass-out respray but suggested I go direct with the recommended guy. Really need to see other completed 911's before I commit, so would be interested in why you're choosing whoever to do yours.

Its not Ollys. Its Daytona Coachworx in Hertfordshire. I saw their work on another members 944S2 ("Copperman" - you could drop him a line also and ask detailed questions about standard of work etc) plus i have seen other work on 928's and feedback on them from other places. I guess I used gut feel about them and that evidence of previous work. fingers crossed!!! [;)].
