Young man's first Porsche aka project 951

I haved owned my 951 10 years now. Before it i owned a 944 some years. It's quite understandable also your son grows
up to like 944 models as well.

Since my son is a poor student, the only possible way to buy a 944 was to get a project car. These cars are much more expensive here in Finland, because of the worlds third highset car taxation.

This project came for sale at the end of last year. We considered it, but the asking price was not too attractive for us. We forgot it, but in February we found out it was bought by a guy with whom i have done some parts business earlier. He bouht this car to breake it for parts.

He had already sold steering rack, brakes, and some other minor parts. Luckily we managed to trade this car for some extra parts i had in my store and what he needed for his 911 project, so total we paid for it was just some parts worth few hundred euros.

We saw this car in "live" early in March, vistited thre several times and wondered would it be wise to get it or not.Well, the desicion was made and first step was to trailered it home.

This 944 Turbo was sold 31.12.1987 in Switzerland by Amag in Schinznach-Bad; Aargau. First owner lived in Hergiswill. Car was sold in 1998 to Sweden and it was imported to Finland 2005. Soon after that it suffered the classical engine fire syndrome. Car has been sitting ever since

I like to use pictures, so hope you have enough bandwidth [:)]

First step at home was to drive some electricty to power windows to get them closed. Car has been sitting for years because of the engine fire. Last few months it has been outdoors with open windows.

Now my son was able to wash the car. Next step is to remove the rest of the interior, drop off the whole undercarriage. All undercarriage parts will be media blasted, and poweder coated; aluminium parts with clear powder. Also engine room needs a lot of attention because the fire damage. First a total clean up procedure and new fresh paint. We have a spare hood which also needs some fresh Diamond Blue paint, because it's Satin Black Metallic. Lot's of work to do; luckily i have a lot of spare parts to accomplish this project. This is a father-son project and a good learning possibility to my son.Remains me when i started to work with cars with my own father

Couple of months ago, my son wondering, will this be a wise move at all to buy this?

Because i am just about to start my new business, i have been too busy to help my son.

Some progress though, we removed at the end of April the rest of the interior and dropped off the front suspension and few other parts for clean up and rebuild. Now just have to remove all the rest pieces from engine compartment, so it can be re-painted. A friend of mine promised to do it. Should get good results since he is a professional hot rod builder. http://www.herstiautoshop.com/koti.htm

Few picturs from April:

One night sleep, and story continues. Dissassembled most of the frontend. Only few electric wires left. When we removed the wires we will wash the engine bay with pressure washer and then we can start to prepare it for a fresh paint.

I also started to make a new badgepanel with integrated GTS style lights. Here's molds more or less finished

The finished product should look like this (panel for my own car, i am not going to use those light units)

We also managed to find quite many missing parts for son's project. Brake system missed booster, but a friend have some extra ones, so we get one for a good price.Another friend gave us a good steerinck rack. Brake caliper issue has to be solved, but another friend of mine fabricate a kit like this for my son, so it will be a guideline to caliper selection

Some progress this week. We removed last of the wiring harness from engine room including the fuse box. Today some elbowe grease, washed the wheel wells, bottom, engine room etc. Tomorrow we will start to prepare engine room for the new paint.

Got most of the 22+ years road dirt away from wheel wells

Fantastic work !! I often am put off working on my car due to bad weather. You guys are still going strong in the snow. Looks like a good project. How easy is it to source 944 turbo parts in Finland? I travel to Finland very ofter (working for Nokia) and don't see many Porsche on the roads.

Wow, this is just fantastic Olli, I only wish I had the skills, tools and time to do this myself! So, I'm assuming you'll be slotting a mega-bhp 5-cylinder Audi unit in the front end then, or something just as tricky? Good luck with it all and keep us updated!

Last winter was the worst in 30 years here. Lot's of snow. It's quite easy to find parts for these cars when you know all the major players. I also work in the business my self, just opening a Porsche parts business. If you work for Nokia, then most likely you visit places like Espoo/Helsinki, Salo and Oulu. In Capital helsinki area it's quite easy to spot Porsches every now and then.

Not Audi 5-cyl to this car. Most likely it will be a 2.8L storker, depends on son's hobby funds

Great post Olli. I look forward to watching progress photos. .... and so will my son!! Damn you!!! [:)][:D][8|]

Great project Olli, it is always interesting to see our cars broken down into the components My eldest is about to turn 10 and I have been thinking about her first car, and that perhaps it should be a bit of a project, although her Mum probably won't be in favour of a Porsche! So far I have floated the ideas of a re-built Landrover Defender or a Beach Buggy kit and both have been received well!

Ive had my eye on that badge panel on Rennlist (the thread where someone blatantly stole the 924.org 'how to' guide)...

Some progress today. My son sanded the engine room first with 180 then 240, 600 & 1000 grid papers. It's more or less ready for new paint. My son in action:

Love these kind of thread, story in pictures But as for the cold weather.. doesn't worry us as much up North.. this was last December when I was replacing the Auto gearbox on my 924S, on the driveway!!!

Not quite as bad but it was -1 the day we did the swap LOL

Keep the pics coming matey !! p.s, great garage you have there, I guess it is heated?!!
Actually it is my son's garage... I don't have that kind of luxury any longer, because house and garage is now owned by my ex-wife. Built the house and 70 squre meter garage in the 90's. Garage is heated, it has a water pipe system installed under floor, so it's nice to work even winter time under car [:)] There is also shower and toilet in the garage. I suppose i planned it quite well almost 20 years ago. My current house have only one car garage, but luckily i have almost 50 squre meter workshop in my house's basemanet [;)]

Went couple of hours ago to pick up a brake booster for my son's car. Well i did quite good deal, got that booster, but also couple windshield wiper systems, 3 pairs of doors with handles, power windows and central locking systems, one complete front suspension, 4 transaxles, one sunroof (wonder what to do it, because both of our 951's are without sunroofs) etc, etc. All for 40€ [:)] Now i understand why seller ask me to come with trailer [:D]

Good work, I'm just about to drop the tranny and TT on my car and didn't think of removing it all as one lot. Thanks for that!

You must also remove suspension parts in that case, otherwise TT will not drop off.

I was thinking I would have to remove the driveshafts and drop the tranny then the torque tube carrier and suspension. It seems like you dropped the lot it one go?

Yes we dropped it as a one unit. Very simple thing to do. Much easier to continue work when you don't have to remove parts one by one under car. The whole proedure took us about 40 minutes. Today my son continue finishing the engine room, most likely my friend will paint it on Thursday, at least it has been warm enough this week; between 25-27C [:)] We also bought today all necessary colors. My friend asked us to buy old fashioned non water colors. He said those water colors are more safely for envirnonment but more harmful for the painter. Local paint store studied their books but they found only mixing formulas for water colors. I asked them to check out Audi color charts.... Luckily Audi also used Diamond Blue LM5U and there was mixing forumula available for old fashioned toxic paint. Engine room will be painted in mysons garage, because it's quite difficult to move 951 which is not a roller anylonger. After paint we can start to put parts back again.

Excellent job! Great to see one of our cars being restored instead of the sad alternative! I am envious (in a good way) of your son having such a great workshop to work in and also in having a father who is such a skilled porsche enthusiast. Keep up the good work and keep us posted. i will be following this thread with interest.[:)]

Some progress today. Since it was 27C today, it was a perfect day some fresh paint. A friend of mine did a quality job, we could have sanded it better.... We are pleased of the result, after all it's an engine room. Some masking
