Young man's first Porsche aka project 951

Let's see how well we can mechanically re-condition them first. Somehow i hate the idea of powdercoating/paintin them. Started to restore steering rack we got from a friend. It's a total mess, but still useable. Put it to the parts, now waiting for some soda blasting for aluminium parts and fresh yellow passived surface for "tube". I found ZF repair kit from my stock of unused parts :) (here's poor quality phone picturs)

Restored clutch cylinders.Removed surface rust, then re- painted them. Since we are on tight budjet we used Mercedes W124 rubber parts, which are a direct fit also to 951. Total cost less than €10 :)

Did also some overhaul to son's Golf today. Nice pair in his garage :)

Got yesterday a great pair of 964 C4 front calipers. Calipers were taken from this C4:

Calipers are (as you can see from picture) as good as new [:)]

Opinion needed; should we stay black finish or should we use "Corso Traffico" ? See the picture of GT3 set up i just rebuild:

Calipers were so sooty you would not want to touch them. Easisest way to improve them was to put them into citric acid bath as i did yesterday evening.

After overnight acid bath calipers are much nicer to work with. Now just remove slide plates and pop out the pistons. [:)]

Disassembled calipers. Some difficulties with burnt seals, which glued pistons very effectively. Also had to use mig to couple of screws to be able to take them off. Otherwise "business-as-usual" caliper job. Now they are ready to get a new surface. Removing a stuck screw:

A friend designed a new transmission mount for son's project. My friend have a nice set of CNC machinery and he promised make this trans mount and several other billet aluminium parts. First drawing of the new transmission mount. Type is a semi solid.

Warm weather continues, so when it is just about 30 Celsius, it's good time to practice some excercise which needs strong muscles :) Since i am an old fart, it's younger men business. My son put most of the rear axle to parts. Plan is to remove hubs & torsion bars tomorrow, after that these parts are ready to be media basted and some re-surface.

Olli - this project is making a superb thread, it is fantastic to see how the cars are put together. The photos and notes are great - keep up the good work! Mike

So basically this thread is telling us the explotation of children doesn't take only in the third world? I would have kicked my father pretty hard if he had ever tried to put down my throat his own obsessions/passion/fad...[:D]

Yes, my son's destiny is to work with cars. I suppose it's not though question of use child labour, he is 22 at the moment, time flies.[;)] His another ride, just passed the yearly inspection ( i suppose it's MOT in UK ? )

Would you be interested in getting an extra one made up? I need a new one for my rebuild project. What else are you getting made up?

Just delivered 70kg various 951 parts to ZNC coating. Due the EU reculations, it's not possible to get that factory like yellowish surface anylonger(stuff is very poisonous). Shop i use make clear ZNC and a little bit lighter shade of yellow now.We decided to go with that.
What else are you getting made up?

Since we are going to install dash board soon, it is time for some AC/heater unit overhaul. Car's original unit was damaged a bit in engine fire, so replacement unit came from a parts car which was originally sold in Saudi-Arabia (see pictures).

Need to buy some oem style seal material tomorrow, after that parts can be put back together. Most likely this unit will give some heat/cold like it used to when it was new [;)]

When it's 33Celsius, it's nice to work with heater/AC unit :) Putting back the flaps

Terve Olli, Your skills are fantastic, i wish i had the nerve to try things myself instead of running to the nearest garage. Keep up up to date. Those Carbon tear drop mirrors are sooo nice.[:)]

Amazing :) how do you get it so clean? did you dip some of the metal parts in solution? Cracking work so far [;)]
