1973 911e barn find

Fantastic news - looks like the original keys too, two sets per vehicle with red masters. So nice to see them all intact. There, I'll take my anorak off now. Looking forward to more pics.

Well at long last ive got them, been a great day and I cant stop smiling. A few more pics: http://s853.photobucket.com/albums/ab97/myatt1972/Porsche%20pick%20up%20day/

Thanks for the kind comments, Have drained the old fuel out of the 914 today and will be doing the same to the 911, the fuel smells awfull. Was wondering if these cars can run ok on unleaded petrol, I assume with alloy heads they have hardened valve seats fitted but would be grateful for conformation. Cheers Keith...

These old 911 will run on anything, the compression ratio is 8.0:1. They were designed originally to run on low octane are are perfectly happy on unleaded.

Thanks Nick I was hoping that was the case. Have made some progress on both cars today, the 911 starter is playing up so have removed the starter today which is a bit of a fiddle but not too bad. After putting fresh petrol in the 914 and a gap in the points she fired up a treat, the clutch is ok and I drove a lap of my yard at work so very pleased. All electrics work on both cars so need to start work on the brakes next. Keith...

Amazing! [;)]

What a fantastic story. Just found it this evening. Absolutely transfixed and an excellent result. I hope these two fine machines are soon proudly sporting a new MOT. Please keep us updated on your progress.

wow! what a story! i'm hooked, i didn't think things like this really happened! can i ask how you came to know about the cars? just so i can find the next one! ;) with this and the '67 911 that my friend just bought, my hankering for an early 911 is gaining some serious momentum!! :) well done indeed, please keep us all updated as we live our barn find fantasies through you!!!

I cant believe it myself some days, but it all becomes very real when you are on your back with your arm bent in three places to get to the top bolt of the starter motor. As for finding the cars, a good mate of mine does house clearance and finds all sorts of amazing stuff most of which ends up in my garage. Keith...

Blimey they're both lovely. I picked up a 1983 944 which had been in a garage since around 2000 but it wasn't in the greatest condition before hand so yours look like they won't need as much work to get them back up and running. I look forward to hearing how you get on with these two.

Worked on the 914 today, have posted in the 914 section. Keith... http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=536457&mpage=1&key=&#536457

Managed a couple of hours on the car this afternoon, got the starter back on but it still wouldnt turn over so bypassed the ignition switch and it turns over perfectly, I then noticed that the reverse lights were on but the car doesnt seem to be in reverse. I removed the reverse light switch and tested it and its fine so is the car stuck in reverse? I dont seem to be able to select gears as you would with a manual car but of course I cant engage the clutch without the engine running. If it was in reverse that would explain it not turning over from the key. Any ideas folks would be gratefully received. Also noticed the fuel pump doesnt run so I have removed it, are they repairable or is a new one needed? Also some grease monkey seems to have jacked the car up on the rear anti roll bar drop link and bent it, Is that part available or do I need to straighten it? A question for Mr Moss, whats a full set of poly bushes going to set me back? Cheers, Keith...

I'm not sure if this will fix the problem but sportos have a cut out switch to prevent them starting in gear, if it is going to start, you would need to have the gear lever in neutral. I once had the reverse light on problem and it was because the wires which are attached to a sender on the side of the gearbox were attached to the wrong posts or were shorting to earth because they were old and cracked. There is quite a bit of info on the sporto gearbox [link=http://sportomatic.org]here[/link] including service manuals. My sporto is lovely to drive, I just wish it had six gears! Look in the 'gallery' and 'driving with sportomatic'.

Prices for SuperPro bushes [link=http://www.early911.co.uk/html/superpro.html]here[/link]. That drop link could be straightened, new ones are still avalable from Porsche for £23.33 each. Left is 901 333 731 01, right is 901 333 732 01

Thanks Bones, the wiring to the switch is all good so I think it may be something more sinister. Can you engage all your gears while the engine is not running? Thanks Nick, I will be in touch soon about the bushes, prices are good, it costs more to do my mk1 Mazda rx7. Hi Robin, I took the fuel pump to work today and gave it a gentle tap while applying 12v and away it went, dont know how reliable it will be but I had it pumping fuel for an hour so I will give it a go. Its a bosch pump 0580 970 001 Cheers, Keith...
