Keith, Do you know what happened to the Rolls Royce which was pictured in the garage along with your Porsches? Rich

Yes you should be able to engage all the gears with engine switched off and you should be able hear the selectors clunking into place from the driver's seat. Behind the front seats there is an inspection plate under the carpets, in there you will find the coupling between the gear lever and the input shaft, it is possible that the coupling is unattached but, as it is a splined fitting, that possibility is remote; have you checked the oil level in the g'box?

Hi Rich, It was sold just before the porsche's for 7k, it needed some work but not a bad price. Keith...

Seems I have problems then, will check the coupling tomorrow and oil level. Thanks for your help, Keith...

Spent a bit more time on the car this evening, checked the oil level which was ok so decided to drain it. On the drain plug was remains of what looked like the spring from inside an oil seal, not a good sign. The linkage was ok although the bushes are worn. I then decided to take a plate off the side of the box next to the reverse light switch, this plate has a fork on the other side slotted over a selector lever but the selecter seemed to be waving about in thin air. when I shined a torch into the box I could see where the selector should be, after a bit of fiddling I got it back in and replaced the fork. I can now get some gears and turn the engine over from the key, Ive got my fingers crossed that with some adjustment on the linkage I may be ok, but the question would be what caused it??? 925 Sporto box on e-bay in usa £550 hmm Keith...

IF i'm not mistaken, Helen and Larry Goff bought a spare sporto gearbox for their 2.2 911T which is still laying in their garage? send helen on here a pm : she is answering in the following post: [link=http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=542024&mpage=1&key=&#542024]http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=542024&mpage=1&key=&#542024[/link] Best regards and good luck, Bert

I think the 2.2 had a 905 box, mine is a 925 box, but its worth a try. If they got it as a spare it may be a 925 box. Thanks for the onfo, Keith...

Thanks for the pump info, the pump is a roller cell type of pump where an electric motor drives a cruciform round inside a circular chamber which has an inlet and two outlets. The small rollers are very susceptible to tiny bits of grit and can be stopped very easily, what you did was to have dislodged the small speck of what might be rust from inside the fuel tank or the fuel lines be they metal or rubber. The fuel pumps are now unobtainable, the last time I spoke to Stuttgart they were waiting for a big enough order to place with Bosch for Bosch to have a small production run. Some restorers have found other ways to pump fuel to replace faulty Bosch units. If your pump is running leave well alone apart from cleaning up the outside and perhaps painting it and make sure you replace the Fuel Filter, which is the large silver can inside the nearside engine bay in front of the ignition unit. The pumps will go on and on but as I said dont like any dirt present. I believe the E, S, and RS pumps have different outputs but are otherwise interchangeable.

Hi Berny, I would be very interested if you could lay your hands on a 925/00 sporto. Many thanks, Keith... Hi Robin, some great info there, thank you. It seems a bit daft to have the pump before the filter if the pumps dont like debris, maybe a pre pump filter would prolong pump life. Keith...

Spent a couple of hours working on the car this evening, drained the fuel tank, put the pump back on, replaced the fuel lines, put 20l of fresh fuel in. I got some plugs from a motor factors, he has 60 old bosch w260t2, didnt think 6 for a tenner was bad. So with new fuel, new plugs and points I decided to turn the key. She fired up almost immediately and apart from the exhaust blowing she is sweet as a nut! Now the gearbox is a different story, for some reason when it is in neutral I have no power to the switches on the gear leaver that activate the clutch, if I blip the throttle I can get it into gear without the clutch working, once it is in gear I have power to the switches and the clutch seems to work, also the reverse lights are still on. I think the box needs major surgery but the engine is sweet so Im smiling. Keith...

Although you may be correct about the g'box needing surgery, don't jump to that conclusion before you have given the sporto system a thorough check over because if you do renovate the g'box you will still be left with a system that doesn't work. Fix the sporto's electrical and pneumatic system before you strip the g'box. Start by removing the gear shift lever boot and verify that the points in there are working. Start the engine, then turn it off, the sporto air reservoir will allow a few tries at putting the car through the gears, you should hear the bellows in the clutch servo wheeze and the clutch activate, if you have never used a sporto box before, remember to take your hand off the gear lever as soon as you have shifted the gear stick, if you hold onto the stick it will always be out of gear as the clutch is disengaged. From neutral push the gear stick into gear and let go immediately, the car should be in gear now and hopefully won't stall, although after all this time the sporto valve may need adjusting, this sets the 'pick up' of the clutch, hard or soft if you like. See if you can persuade Berny Tester to drive over to see the car, Bernies mustard on these era cars, especially sportos as he owns one.

Thanks Bones, I can hear the clicking and wheezing noises with the engine switched off but I can only get those noises when its in gear, for some reason I have no live at the gearstick contacts when in neutral. I will check the wiring diagrams tonight as I think the switch on the side of the box is cutting the live to the contacts because something in the box is caput. Also still can only get two gears but have loads of play in the linkage so need to get it re-bushed. Keith...

Also try Mike Bainbridge, http://www.mbporsche-engineering.co.uk/ -for spares... I think he had a Sporto box or two floating around....

Thanks Mel, I will give him a try if all else fails. I want to repair the one Ive got but it would be good to have a replacement while I strip the original. Had some time on the car today and was pleased to find that the clutch mechanism is working ok. Keith... Also got a week in the lakes in may, hmmm, may visit Kendal !

was indeed true. but, as i no longer own a sporto, i sold the spare gearbox(and bit's) to Mike Smith of PR services.

Thanks for the info Helen, think I will need a box at some point, was hoping it might be an easy fix but it looks like its a bit more serious. Keith...

Many thanks Mel, Ive just got back from camping in the lakes and called in to see Mike Bainbridge while I was there. What a great bloke he is, very helpfull. He thinks the box should be a fairly simple repair so Ive got to whip engine and box out and take the box to him. So thanks again Mel for putting me in touch with a top bloke. Keith...
