944 Register Dyno Day 7th May 2005

Top, top, top day. I was there for 8 1/2 hours and only left because I wanted to be home before dark (you beat me on mileage Chris but only just and my route is less fast moving I guess taking 2 1/2 hours at a "respectable clip").

Also a big thanks to Allan who has a fantastic facility there and took quite a bit of time out to talk to some of us. I came away with several questions (good ones I'll enjoy researching) but also some fantastic answers, not least to the question "where will I get my car remapped after I have finished the post-rebuild mods?"

Yes thanks to Alan and all at Weltmeister, Paul for sorting it, Rick for logging it and John for photoing it. Nice to see old friends and meet some new ones. Excellent day but boy are those Australian Horses are strong! [;)]

Top day. A big thank you to Paul for arranging it and Allan for his hospitality - and not a UK Truck to be seen.

Great ride in the RS, I remember again the day I decided I must have a Porsche. I now know I must have a 911. I shall probably hate Allan for months to come.

What a superb facility, what superb company, what a superb day and some very interesting results. Anybody want to by a Link Map kit?

Firstly, thanks to everyone for their patience while I scanned the data from your graphs and filled in your car specification information.

It was a brilliant day out - an exceptional turnout of cars from some of the friendliest owners you could wish to meet !

I am sure everyone will agree that big thanks are due to Paul Smith for arranging the day.

Weltmeister - thanks for the use of your exceptional facilities. I had the good fortune to spend a lot of hours at Weltmeister on Thursday trying to get the GURU MAP computer to program. Although the kit would not map properly, the guys stuck with me till gone 11PM. Their knowledge and dedication (as well as facilities) are truely exceptional. The Dyno is truely awesome in its capacity, accuracy and facilities.

Thanks to John Sims who took over the role of photographer while I scanned the nearly 150 graphs !

The full report with detailed table of results etc will e posted on my website some time next week when I've had some sleep !

Below is a table of results taken from the graphs I have;

If you ran & didn't make it on to the list it's because I didn't get to scan your graphs! Please emaile me so we can somehow get that sorted

Some of the lower figures were as a result of problems with the cars, many of which have been diagnosed by the shared knowledge of those present !

More will follow soon !

Rick.

Apologies to Will - not intentional - I just picked up the rear wheel horsepower (RWHP) graph by mistake !

First correction. I'm off to bed now. Any further corrections pointed out will be updated tomorrow !

I was only going to stay for an hour or two... but too interesting to leave.
Peter, thoroughly enjoyed himself. He is here for a few weeks working for Quantas as an Aircraft Engineer. Apparently, the price of 944's in Oz are double! He is considering buying one here and shipping it over, (also right hand drive) so anyone with an s2 for sale ....?

Complete trivia.
The wipers in Oz on a 944 wipe/park the opposite way.
Anything to do with being upside down?
Anyone know of models/country the same?

Nice to meet/talk.

Hi All,
A great day out. Thanks to Paul for organising it, Rick for the computer work and John for the photography. Special thanks to the guys at Weltmeister - they hardly stopped all day. A professional and expensive set up and we had great value for money, looking forward to next year.
Regards,
Phil

Hi everyone who attended

Great day, great company and superb facilities (and burgers)

Thanks to all who offered advice regarding my `new` car niggles and in particular to Andrew Sweetenham who crawled all over it and confirmed its a good `un. Thanks Andrew.

Special thanks to (cant rember his name) who managed to get his key to unlock my car when it alarmed it self and self locked while idling []

Roll on the next one when I may have made a few mods upon advice received from you all.

Regards

Paul

I think I heard Peter say his car is an '85. That being the case it could be an early '85 with the 924 dash in which case they all wipe the opposite way AFAIK.

Don't worry! I wouldn't nick it[;)]

You are correct about dash etc. So, no revelation then. Whoops[:(]

Should I be concerned that the S2 only returned 200 BHP yesterday when most of the other S2's averaged around the 206-208 , the chap at Weltmeister said the car was running fine but 200 was a poor return. Worth worrying about or just leave alone ?

Cheers
Chris

944 Reg members :

A great big thank you from Chris, Jamie & Myself to Paul for organising the day and to Smithy for his exceptional food.

The biggest thank you must go to the owners of the 31 cars that we ran during our 11 hours or so. Some cars ran really good numbers and gained membership of the "exclusive hat club" , others sadly were dissapointed but in the main I think a good day was had by all. It is always a pleasure to host days such as this, especially so when the owners and their families are so evidently enthusiastic about their cars.

I thank all of you for your comments regarding our facilities and I am sure the guys here feel rewarded by your congrats on their efforts.
We look forward to seeing you all again soon

Regards

A nice thing for us to see was the standard unmodified 250 Turbo E64 TEG to actually record 250 on our dyno ! It all helps to validate the accuracy of the machine.

Cheers for now

Allan

Assuming Chris at Weltmeister gave it a clean bill of health in terms of fuelling then maybe it's been driven "carefully" for too long and you just need to start giving it a bit of thrashing, or continue to do so if you already do. My cab loved to redline and didn't really go until 4,000 rpm but some owners never find that out.

I don't believe it has a 'learning' ECU that has optimised for pootling but it might still have deposits around the head disrupting flow because it has not been run hard enough to burn them off enough.

Might be worth using Optimax for a while too (not just one or two tanks) because I have seen enough proper technical testing of it to believe it really does clean the engine.

Finally take solace that at 200 bhp it wasn't the lowest S2 output on the day; that went to a chipped, exhausted and filtered version.

Cheers Fen - Optimax is certainly worth considering and yes I can take some solace re the chipped S2

Just to state again - what a great day - will def do it again

Hey Folks
Glad you all had a good day...]

just out of interest..

What was the highest BHP recorded for an S2 + what had it had done to it.??? Just curious...

Chris r...
Were you in or around Blackpool on Friday mid AM...??
If so i saw you .. i was in a Horizon Blue 968 cab....Skipool roundabout..????

I think from Rick's list that the highest S2 was Andy Lintern's 208.0 and from his post on Titanic I believe it's standard.

If anybody has tried a GTECH performance meter, I would be interested to know how the results compare to the dyno?

Mike

Man what a busy Porschering weekend!

I've just got back from the R10 display at the Stoke Goldington Steam Rally, and combined with getting in at 8pm after the Dyno Day on Saturday I'm completely creamed. Thanks very much to everyone who came on Saturday, it was a very long, loud, and petrol filled day. The guys at Weltmeister looked after us superbly, and you were all very patient getting your runs in.

Once Rick has all of the graphs on his website then the real fun can begin. Amatuer post dyno analysis [:D] and we'll start with my Air Fuel Ratio, because it seem way too rich to me.
