944 Turbo S Engine Rebuild Thread

WR5 fare a bit better on track but the car HATES them when cold - literally won’t run at less than 1500rpm until up to temp.

That's odd. Never had an issue starting in even sub 0°C weather with NGK 7's (equivalent to Bosch 5's).

My car came to me without the skirts 10 years ago and given how low it was I never bothered sourcing a set. I’ve raised the ride height a bit now and never really given it another thought. When I fitted new front wings I think I even had the attachment points removed. As you said - one less thing to clean behind or catch on a kerb.

Dave you can remove the stubby jacking point extensions if you want a cleaner look, there is a bolt straight through them with a nut on the other side. I had to hacksaw mine off but now I don't have that odd sticky out bit under the sills.

Day after my Trackday I dropped the car back at the bodyshop as there were a couple of things not quite right that I hadn’t noticed at handover.

Just needs a polish and reassembly ready to squash bugs and pick up stone chips on the way to the Transaxle Meet next weekend!

I'm thinking I prefer the look now without PORSCHE scrawled across the rear, that turbo badge says all it needs to say.

I've not re-applied the decal since my last lot of paint, probably won't.

The reason that area was repainted was I fitted one of the Highgate House OEM-style decals and where the paint had been blended it lifted as I was repositioning it.

Subsequently bought one of the "Woolies Workshop” outline style ones as I think that they are better.

Well - that’s it. 3.0 16v Turbo engine loaded in a mate’s pickup and dropped off at my Indy’s- and my last drive of the 2.5. Nothing to write home about, traffic with damp and greasy conditions - I took the opportunity to light the back end up at will.

First thing Monday is an MOT to buy me more than 2 months fettling time and then it’s engine out, strip off the bits I need for the new one - mainly flywheel/bellhousing, etc. and then put the new engine physically in the hole. Then getting it flatbedded back to mine to build up, plumb in and solve all the little issues that appear ready to appear in the spring as a 450-500bhp butterfly.

Greedy bar steward! Poor 2.5, what did it ever do to deserve a divorce, well apart from demanding a rebuild after ingesting piston coatings?

In all seriousness though, that thing going to be mega! Good luck with the transplant.

Stuart

Got several 2.5 maps for when you finally/ever get around to needing them. VEMS is a pretty straightforward install, happy to guide you through it. I’ve been doing a boost lookup table for a guy in California who daily drives his twbo this week - he emailed me the logs and his config, I tweaked it and sent it back and it was there for when he woke up - time difference worked in our favour!

Cheers Stuart - 2.5 is running great so it seemed the perfect time to do the swap as I‘ll just clean it up cosmetically and leave it on a stand in the garage with a sheet over it - it’s like taking your tools out in the car, by having it I’ll hopefully never need it but it’s nice to know it’s there. I aiming for a nice solid 450bhp for now, I already have an amazing torque curve (plateau?) but hoping to dial up the off-boost characteristics a bit and hopefully the 16v head should stop the usual 8v power drop off in the higher rev range. I’ve got a feeling that my Stage 1 intercooler might become a restriction but as I’m trying to go "fully dressed” with aircon, etc. I might have to get creative with a solution for that in the future should I wish to mount an attack on 500bhp.

Couple of guys (including Simon now) have gone over to an electric power steering pump setup so that’s something I may scope out for the future. As it is I’ll have enough on with some other "while you’re in there” jobs as I’m planning on changing the fuel lines from nitrile braided to PTFE as well, not to mention all the unknown unknowns as Donald Rumsfeld would say.

I'm definitely putting the car back on the road early next year. It's been 2 years since I've used it, for no good reason other than the MOT ran out just after I moved house. If you're ever in Boston with work, perhaps you could load the map for me. [:)]

I might be down at Caldwell Park at some point - although its only 2 mins to load the map via Bluetooth or Serial-USB cable

Looking forward to hearing more of your progress with the new engine. Mine drives quite a bit differently than the 8V, all for the better. Will be interesting to see how you compare both. This is an S2 head with standard 37 mm inlet valves, right?

Thanks. Were you running 80lb Deka injectors by any chance?

I am (engine is still in the car today) - so more reason to get yours back on the road.

Thanks Thom, would love to hear the differences - give me something to look forward to and keep me motivated when the going gets tough?

Standard S2 head for now, I do have some different valves I could play with but for the moment I’ll see how it runs. My 8v head has +1mm Ferrea inlet valves. If I’d built the head I’d have probably done some work to it before fitting but there’ll be plenty of time for that I’m sure.

How many lbs/min can your compressor flow already? You will be surprised how much a turbo that feels oversized for an 8V engine can feel undersized for a 16V engine

Not sure on the specs, it’s a Holset HX35 mated to a replica KKK #10 housing.

It’s physically this big (and I don’t have a BeetleJuice head):

Yep, I've paid insurance on it, and it has just sat under a cover in the garage. Plan is to fit the VEMS, and new Lindsey 61-10 turbo I bought years ago, and see if I still feel the love.
