944 Turbo S Engine Rebuild Thread

Holset turbos are physically large but it seems the HX35 is good for "only" 500 bhp. That's not saying it won't work with your 16V engine and I bet you will have amazing response and a huge mid range.

We’ll just have to see when it’s up and running I guess. I’m all about area under the curve though as my previous dyno graph shows. This isn’t standard, this was the precursor to Emanuel Galossen’s Voodoo turbos - he swapped out the turbine when it was built and he has offered me a larger Voodoo hot housing that should be good for a bolt-on 50-60bhp, so that’s always a future consideration.



Getting a new daily driver (hopefully just before Xmas) and that will be 434bhp so this needs to put out 435bhp+ then!

K26/8 looks absolutely tiny in comparison mind you!
 
Left it sat looking lonely yesterday lunchtime as the clutch bolts hadn’t shown up.


Spoke to the mechanic this afternoon - good news is it’s in, was a bit of a faff with headlight brackets having to come out and the cam gear cover off too. Bad news is that one of the captive nuts inside the chassis that the castor mount bolts into has come loose so first job post-start will be running it round to my welder for some "light” surgery to repair it. These things happen I guess.

EG seemed a bit odd to me, and not just because he deleted me from his group when I questioned some of his assertions [:D]. I think the Voodoo turbos were all the work of a turbo rebuilder, and there wasn't much black magic involved. And they seemed pretty expensive too. EG seemed to disappear abruptly off Rennlist, and he had a real issue with RL and Lindsey Racing. It's entirely your choice, but I think Tim tried a few turbos that he sourced much closer to home.
 
A bit odd is putting it lightly - absolute Trump-Worshipping conspiracy theorist ruling his FB world like the communists he purports to hate.


However, he does have access to some good vendors and Keith made 403bhp from a Voodoo on a stock 2.5 8v. The beauty of this turbo is that it bolts up with no issues, even the water cooling banjo fitting went straight on too.

Given all the "known and unknown unknowns” I’m likely to encounter in the coming weeks, having a turbo that just slots in has been a huge potential problem circumvented.


Simon (hi) has helpfully offered to send me his map to get things up and running and I’ll review it along with some logs and see whether there are any boost table improvements to be made for him.


Am away for a few days now so will have to get the car recovered back to mine next week and then I can start reassembly in earnest.
 
I suppose the main advantages of Holset turbos are their low price and durability. Aren't they usually used on large frame applications like turbo diesel engines for lorries?
You may want to monitor back pressure, as with all the additional air flowing through the top end the balance between cold and hot side may be altered.

Interesting to hear about some odd fellows out there. I remember being blamed for kicking out of the main 944 turbo FB page a clique of arrogant retards some years back only to be told some months later by a few long term owners who saw how things were going on on another FB page that I had done the right thing. Horses for courses I suppose.

Getting it recovered back to mine next week and then I can make a start on the more delicate and time consuming bits.
 
Had the car and the engine recovered back to mine during the week - as it had sat outside it was covered in ice and snow.


It‘s taken 4 days for the temperature to go above freezing and for me to clean all the ice off. Garage is now swept out and the dehumidifier is on.


We left the boot open as the battery is disconnected and it closed when the recovery truck went over a bump. Will need to get under the car and find the starter end of the harness, apply 12v and try to get the boot open that way.


It’s up on the Quickjacks atm, I might get the opportunity to make a start on it tomorrow.
 
I've dropped the rear seats, and reached over to connect or disconnect the battery, lots of times.

Usually *just* about possible to get wedged through the cage but all the ancillaries are in that big box.

Ha ha. Isn't there supposed to be a positive contact under the bonnet? Never tried it myself though. Disconnect the VEMS before trying any funny electrikery business though.
 
My 86 doesn't have the post, my 89 did. It was only meant to let you open the hatch but I did use it occasionally to top up the battery. From memory the later hatch was electric only and the key just operated a microswitch.

The VEMS ECU is well and truly disconnected, as is the post under the bonnet . . . because the entire engine bay wiring loom is in that box in the boot!
 
Or, given that the car is up in the air - just attach my jump pack to the positive lead hanging down next to where the starter will go?
 
Interested to find out if that powers the hatch lock with the battery disconnected. Good luck [:)].

Hopefully the battery positive terminal is not near the body!
