944 Turbo S Engine Rebuild Thread

Thanks David, they looked different to the originals so I thought they were aftermarket. Good they are plastic. I presume they fit over the rubber pipe holders?

Yup, all plastic so a good replacement for the metal originals. Whilst refitting them from back to front, two of the plastic centres on the original types split hence the new ones are just the two under the arch liner. Had they been cheaper I’d have been inclined to replace the lot.

Epic post!??

High praise indeed from you, great to see you back around these parts. You’d probably do a better job of driving it than me too - after all, I’m not the 944 Turbo Championship Winning Driver :p

Awwwww shucks!!!
Your engine looks really well thought out wish i had such a technical understanding!!
Was CSCC Future Classics i drove in ,was 2010....,Time really does fly.

Popped in to the wonderful welders today, they gave me a present I may wish to return to my Indy’s.

They cut a section out around the castor mount, lined everything up and put a new captive nut in there. Lots of primer, welded up both skins, left the weld proud for extra strength and undersealed it all.

Manifold was ready to be welded up - they even clearanced it for my strut brace! Intercooler hard pipes were being made while I was there too. Getting scarily close to key turning time.

I also started cleaning up and reassembling the "old” engine. Partly so it takes up less space in the garage and partly because the more it’s ready to drop in at a moment’s notice, the less likely I am to need it! :ROFLMAO:

engine bay looking great mate !! yr red pipes reminding me so much of mine , as i now have shares in red silicone [:)]

chuffed for you and good work , looking forward to you turning that key ,… it’s the scariest and most enjoyable few seconds there is and i still remember my first after long hard engine build in the back garden waiting fir that oil preasure to build ( what a scarry moment when nothing was happening then all of a sudden - oil preasure ! - happy days )

i’ve got that all to come again soon myself ( fingers crossed anyway)

Daniel

There is certainly enough room on that intake plenum for 3 or 4 more "+5HP" stickers [8|]...[:)]

Maybe that’s how some parts vendors get their hp improvement claims.

Sorry if it has been mentioned already but are you running batch fire or sequential injection?

Batch fire still, Wasted Spark with a Bosch coilpack.

I actually ordered one of the custom coilpack leads a touch too short and swapped it over with the paired output on the coilpack.

I considered going to a COP sequential setup but not sure of the benefits and I didn’t want to change too many parameters at once.

Not talking about spark but injection ;-)
If you don't upgrade to sequential injection you will hear knocking noise caused by the lack of fuel damper on your aftermarket fuel rail. Porsche ditched the fuel damper on the 968 as they upgraded from batch injection to sequential injection.
Setting up sequential should be a walk in the park with the factory cam sensor of the 16V set up and the VEMS.

Doh, of course, sorry - brain fart, been a long week. Run without a damper for many years after the Lindsey Racing-supplied one leaked as did the replacement!

I’ll look into sequential (and possibly COP) once I have it up and running.

It‘s Alive!!!!

After a bit of clarting on with the settings for my ignition setup I got the map loaded up and it starts and runs wonderfully.

Only ran it for a minute or so but oil pressure is good and once the exhaust manifolds had burned off the oil on them everything else seems great.

ABS light is on but I’ve got 10 months to worry about that and sort it. Also some oil underneath that seems to be coming from the filter console area so I’ll get it jacked up and hopefully it’s just a fitting that needs nipping up. I can bleed the coolant and power steering fluid at the same time.

Absolutely buzzing and a mile wide smile - hard to believe it’s only 77 days since I drove it for an MOT and to drop the engine!!!

Filter is in the wheel arch.

In perfect timing, partworks.de delivered me a package of seals, etc. to finish reassembling the "old” engine too!

Found the culprit of the oil leak - I’d left this fitting finger tight while I’d been finishing the other lines. Access was a bit awkward but 10mins later it was sorted.

Great work! Delighted for you!

Can't wait to see next years 6L, V8, 32 valve, twin turbo build! [:D]
