944 Turbo S Engine Rebuild Thread

Well done, happy for you. Looking forward to hearing how you get on with it. I am sure you will find it is a completely different beast from the original engine.

Thanks - still slowly getting there, fixed the leaky power steering banjo but the other end of the high pressure power steering line seems to be leaking. I’ll remove it tonight and top it off at a hydraulic hose place locally tomorrow for new hose to be crimped onto the hard pipes.

Still a slight oil weep, not from that fitting but looks like it may be from the oil filter itself. Annoyingly since I’ve had to move the coil pack down for bonnet clearance I may need to remove this (only 3 nuts admittedly) and see if i can tighten the filter a smidge.

Ran it for a good 10 mins up to temp and through the revs today, needs a bit of finessing at idle but I can do that later on tonight with a glass of wine and the laptop. Sounds good and oil pressure, fans, etc. all present and correct. Still burning oil smoke off the exhaust manifolds and downpipe - stingy eyes - but they both carried on smoking for a good 10 mins after I turned it off so it’s just external gunk not a leak.

This is pretty much ready to throw a sheet over and park up in the corner of the garage now that I’ve refitted the turbo, crossover pipe, etc.

New high pressure power steering hose sorted and fitted same day. Been playing with the map and settings on the laptop and uploaded that to the ECU then tidied that all away under the passenger footboard - no mean feat given the limited space plus the adaptor loom and other wires and connections!

Another run up to temp hopefully later today, check the PS levels and re less coolant and then ready for a road test this weekend - fingers crossed!

Car has been up and down like a Bride’s Nightie!

The guy that redid the power steering hose put a swivel joint in so I could get it perfectly aligned without twisting the hose and apparently it needed to be tighter than I thought it needed to be!

All continent now, ran the car up to temp and varying the revs until the oil thermostat opened to the twin coolers. Another litre of oil added, coolant bled and its back on its wheels. However it then rained heavily this afternoon so I bought a new coat from TK Maxx and went to Costa and Asda with MrsEldavo - I know how to live.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Made it out!

Car ran great for 95% of the 30min spin out - was lugging a bit on the 1 junction trip on the motorway back but I think it’s a mapping issue I’ve hopefully resolved with the laptop this evening.

Cam cover was leaking oil onto the crossover pipe which was nice and smoky. Will reinstall that with some sealant this time. Tried at first to just nip the bolt up but one snapped so had to drill it out and order a new one.

Just bedding the rings in really today with 4th gear 30-80mph pulls and then coasting back down - but did get a bit of boost on the go before hitting my 12psi fuel cut limit I’ve put in for running in. Comes in a lot later than my other engine but hoping I can remedy that with the EBC setup.

Helix clutch has a super smooth action too, really impressed with that. Busy week with work coming up but hopefully I’ll get some more miles under my belt at the weekend.

Exciting stuff. Let me know if you need any running in tips or handy advice about good places to break down to avoid motorway traffic.............[;)]

Nope - turbo was built by EG as a precursor to the Voodoo, it’s a HX35 with replica #10 hotside.

Had the car back out last weekend and running really badly, like a misfire but still smooth-ish, however zero power. Turned out it was only running on cylinders 1&4.

I swapped the coilpack but still the same issues, pulled the plugs out as they were wet and went to swap a new set in when I noticed that the Motorsport plugs I’d been running in my 8v were noticeably shorter than the Bosch ones and the long 16v plug wires hadn’t been engaging properly.

Bosch plugs in, started first time and purred like a kitten again But then it’s snowed all week. If the weather is reasonable this weekend I’ll get a longer run in with some logging to start dialling the map in.

Always a joy when you fix a potential disaster for peanuts! Good work!

After my breakdown and multiple attempts at fixing wires, amidst much head scratching, when it finally purred into life with the new MAF sensor, the feeling was joyous! Tempered slightly by the fact I had had a brand new MAF sensor sat in a box 10 yards from me, whilst I had wasted a week playing with looms!! Anyway, all's well that ends well, part of the fun of ownership!

Look forward to some mileage reports!

So plugs 1&4 were igniting but not 2&3, with the exact same connectors and plugs? Are you sure you don't have trigger errors?

I have zero trigger errors (and the log files to prove it) - I’d rearranged the wires for 2 & 3 and they’d come away just enough to break contact.

By holding them all down I could get it to run on 4 and conversely, a tiny wiggle had it running on every other combo from 0-4! (although technically 0 isn’t running).

Now running great, and consistently so (crosses fingers) but snow has stopped play.

Slowly getting there - was out for a spin at the weekend, firing on all cylinders and logging the run. Great thing about VEMS is that you can then use the logs to correct the fuelling table for next time. Also been slowly dialling the boost control in, but limited to 12psi at the moment for running in.

Couple more niggles resolved too, found the actual source of the/an oil leak being the AN adaptor fitting into the housing wasn’t tight enough. Had to remove the balance belt tensioner pulley to access it and then managed to retime everything back up without even removing an intercooler pipe.

Found that my modified upper radiator hose was leaking too, I’d had to cut down the 90 degree aluminium bend pipe and in doing so had lost the bead rolled edge and coolant was leaking out under pressure. 35mm pipe was too small for my welder’s bead roller but he made me a lip from a new bit of pipe and everything is all back together now - he really is a talented welder.

Shame it’s torrential rain though!

Turbonetics replica #10 hotside? I thought they were NLA a few years ago, Only interested because that is what's on my new old stock 61-10. And there was some discussion about there being not much difference to a KKK# 8 hotside. Unless EG had the #10 machined?

It’s definitely had some work done to it - if it becomes a restriction then we’ll see down the road and it’s not a major job to change the hotside and mounting flange etc.

They have been NLA for a while, I was lucky in that this had been imported from the States several years back and sat on a shelf for a stillborn 8v 3.0 project, then ended up on someone else’s shelf for some time before coming to me brand new unused.
