944 Values

ORIGINAL: poprock

I can't believe Rick's car is up for sale at £7k. What a bargain! If I had £10k to spare I'd be needing a bigger garage about now.

Personally, I think the wide wheel arches are the only thing I don't like on it "¦ but I'm prepared to bet that even they look better in the flesh.

Then again, my own car is a bit "˜Marmite' too I suppose.

Nor can I, put some better pictures of it on pistonheads advert for those that like it!

The 944 still has an air of inferiority from some of the more die hard air cooled porsche generation and I think it is partly this view and those of their contemporary's that keep prices down. (Along with there being still many around)

Now we have more water cooled and front engined porsches in the current line up I think this will be less of an issue in the future and you will start to see people from our generation and others start to appreciate the 944 for the excellent model it was.

But it wont happen overnight and we might as well enjoy the low prices whilst we can as they work to our advantage.

If the 944 had the 4 rings of Audi on the front they would be worth 3x or 4x what they are now, if it was Italian and had a singing alfa v6 in the front it would be acclaimed as one of the all time great cars.

I have no doubt that in time the Cayman will go the same way, don't believe me? Look at contemporary tests and comparisons such as the 944 turbo S v 911 turbo one that put the 944 way ahead in terms of performance. Porsche = 911, its the way it has been for going on 1/2 a century now.

I agree with you...to a point, except the Cayman wasnt made in an Audi factory and is a mid engined flat 6, not too far from the 911, and much more in common with it than the 944.

Its true the 944 wont make 911 prices but it will catch up and perhaps exceed those of current classic Ford's and the like. IMO anyway.

It's an absolute pity that Porsche seems to equal 911 to so many people. I've had two 911's both SC's (a targa and a coupe) I favour the 944 any day of the week. It's very unfortunate people don't go and try other Porsche before they buy a 911, my first Porsche was a 911 that I thought I could make money on because I found a TVR too uncomfortable to sit in and needed a car the next day... and look where that led!

The point I was making though is that I think if people tried the range of Porsches before just buying a 911, 944 values would find a new high [:)]

Plus (and I quite understand when you need to sell a car, you just want it to go) but we are not helping ourselves with the prices at the moment. Good cars REALLY good cars are being advertised at silly low money.

As the cars get harder to find in decent condition and that is going to happen very fast now that rust is widely starting to become a serious problem on cars that have not had maintenance work done, I think the well kept examples could put a 1 in front of the prices and people would still be just as willing to pay it if they couldn't get another one cheaper. There are MANY cars I've driven recently for £15-18k that don't feel as if they should be worth as much as a 944.

Regards,

Ben

968 and some of the late S2's though where made in the home factory, hasn't stopped all 968's except the CS falling into the toilet value wise, and it is a properly rare car. There was a time when the 964 and the 968 cost about the same, now I reckon an equal condition 964 C2 is worth at least double that of a 968.

Have a look at the 914 or in particular the 914-6, having the engine still isn't enough.

The later Turbos too were manufactured in Stuttgart - Anyways I personally don't believe its what factory the car was built in that depresses 944 values. In fact I am sure most don't even realise that the cars were built on the Audi production line.
