952 trackcar update.

Oh, for now it seems we're sticking with the top of the line LINK G4 Extreme ECU. It has many similar features to the Motec I was looking at so we shall just have to see how it pans out. As you can see, the extractors and X-over are substantially larger and apparently in concert with the high flowing head, they are actually overscavenging on overlap during vacuum. A few more pics of the motor and the floating rotors.

You should be ashamed of yourself putting such super looking shapes on here[:D] Looks absolutely fantastic - would love to see it in the flesh, pity you're half a world away, great work!

Thanks Mike. Unfortunately the motor is half a world away from me as well. It's in the U.S. and has been for a long time. I'm about to phone the builder now for some updates as it's meant to be back on the dyno this week. Am very much expecting to hear of more delays....[:'(]

What is that phrase Jeremy Clarkson says. 'Nursing a semi' [;)] wow. It just gets better and better! p.s. overscavenging = unburnt fuel in the exhaust = more entertaining flames [:)]

I'm all for flames etc, but unfortunately they were seeing radical differences in cylinder/exhaust temps between 1/4 & 2/3. I mean over 1000F differences at only 2000rpm with very little or no load. Crazy. Apparently he tested and swapped over everything. Even ran it in n/a config. So really hoping the latest visit to the dyno shows up some answers and dare I say it, solutions. If not, I'll just get the old motor re-installed. It is nothing special. 2.5L with bigger cam and GT3076. I guess the 'Silver lining' in that proposition will be at least we can see how much the chassis mods have helped the car....hey I'm trying to be 'Glass half full' down here. [:)]

Some progress followed by a break or two has resulted in some updates. Let's see; Decided to do a full rewire of the body/chassis including engine harness. All Milspec wiring which is considerably lighter than OEM let alone nice to change over from the 25 year old version. Have also made some changes in the electronic path by switching to a full Motec M400 ECU along with a bunch of new sensors. Wheel speed & suspension travel pots shown here. Mounted the Surge tank in the rear wheel well (which has been shortened from the bottom). There will also be filters, fuel pumps, and Ethanol % sensor located in there. Went with internal hard fuel lines to guard against any offroad excursions. Pic of 993 oil cooler as well. Still running the 2.5L motor in the car currently. It will have sequential CDI and be ready if/when the 3L motor arrives. Hence the firewall connector which will also allow easier motor switch when the time comes. Essentially the car is being 'future-proofed' as much as possible. Not many new bodyshots to show. Although I did buy some 19" wheels from the UK. Essentially what I assume are Chinese Techart knockoffs. They weigh a ton and won't get much use at all. Really only for short jaunts between workshops I'm guessing. The 5" silencer looks pretty ugly without the OEM diffuser. Not to everyone's taste but I actually don't mind them myself and have been one of the few that I've seen to suggest that 19"s can look good on these cars. Taste being subjective of course. [&:]

Excellent, really looking forward to seeing some videos of it in action - bet you cant wait to drive it. Tony

I believe the 3L motor is being crated up now to be sent. I had the US builder stop work on it as I wanted to go in a different direction. He told me that he'd had it on the engine dyno with conservative tune and saw well over 500bhp. I can't prove or refute those claims Thom... Tony you are right, but having said that, on these long projects you start to wonder if you're ever going to drive the car again. I'm led to believe that it's only a matter of weeks before it's going to be started and sent to the dyno. On a conservative dyno the current 2.5L made 305whp without being able to control the ignition and without CDI, so I'm hopeful that we should get 20-30whp over that which will be a good stepping stone to the aforementioned 3L racemotor. Well that's the plan at least...

I'm not sure but I feel the direction you have decided to take will eventually turn out to be the right one.

I think you should contact the Austrailian Tourist Board. Most people travel ther to see stuff like The big Rock or the Opera House,I would travel over to see your car it looks amazing and I cant wait to see video of it on a track.I would also like a walk round video as well.

The Ayres Rock Power and Torque curves are imminent..... wheel speed sensors = abs (non std 86 models)? also traction control..? keep up the good work Patrick good luck George

Cheers George. Not sure that those P & T levels are under threat with the 2.5L motor. Hoping for a modest increase on the 305whp it previously attained. The 3L motor will be a little different if that ever comes to fruition. The wheel speed sensors will be used for Traction control, yes. I'm waiting to hear back from a guy in the US who is fitting abs from a Boxster to his race 951. If this works out it will be a much cheaper way of updating or in the case of the '86 as you point out, fitting, an '86. To clarify, my body/chassis is '86 but most of the running gear is out of my previous '89. In a further twist I'm possibly going to switch the Mo30 spindles over to those from an S2 in view of fitting some Cup calipers that I picked up from Ebay. Looks almost impossible to fit later model Monoblocks to the Mo30 setup.

Now that is interesting, Patrick you have been doing some great things with your car. Stuff like the dash, electrically heated screen and Motec fuse/relay replacement are all fantastic looking and nothing like what anyone here has. I know there are a lot of racers here interested in this stuff. Those lines out in the spare wheel well do they dry break? Also I don't know if its an issue down under but here the MSA have gone crazy all over internal lines & canisters carrying fluid under pressure in the cabin. As an example we have all had to fit protective shells over the suspension remote reservoirs, to prevent the unlikely case that a suspension reservoir could explode and cause injury.

Looking very nice Patrick. BUT... you just have to run it on some split-rim BBS's with gold or bronze centres, you just must!

Neil, we're still working out the brakes. The reason that I'm exploring going up in size is twofold. The last time I drove the car back at the end of 2010 I was doing a raceshop trackday competition which we had to use R spec tyres. We made a last minute adjustment to the geometry (reduced castor) as I also wanted to try out a set of slicks that were on other wheels after the event. This caused the car with the R specs to understeer pretty badly into and through the corners. However when we switched over to the slicks (Hoosier R100 265/645 18" all round) I not only noticed a dramatic increase in turn in (so much so that I kept stuffing up my corner entries based on the day's previous pig understeering on the R specs) but an amazing ability to brake a lot later. However to add to this with the increased corner speed afforded by the slicks, there was also increased workload placed on the braking system. (That system was Big Reds, Performance Friction pads, s/s lines, SRF fluid, 2 piece slotted rotors on the front. Mo30 stock rears with same brand pads.) After only a few short laps playing with a modified EVO my pedal was getting longer and softer and wouldn't have been able to go much further. Thankfully he was also suffering similar probs and spun the car in front of me which allowed me to slow and cool the brakes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xSnau43PiE With all the changes to this car which will eventuate in it being considerably quicker (If not, where's the Luger!) and place more stress on the brakes again. I have a set of 997 Cup Calipers but it maybe that they work on 380mm rotors. I am trying to find out the specifications of the current 2011 Cups and if they can run a smaller rotor. We can get custom hats and rotors made up but need to know if they can run smaller discs. Re the internal hardware/lines etc. It will be made to comply with our Governing body (C.A.M.S.) although I haven't heard of having to cover suspension canisters before? I wonder if that is being just a little too over zealous from the Safety control? Benny, not sure that the budget will stretch to BBS wheels just now. I'm happy with the current Fikse wheels. The 19" Techart knockoffs are just a whimsy. Although I do remember with fondness those old Black and Gold cars from back in the day. JPS specials were much sought after and I was a fan too.
