952 trackcar update.

Hi Alisdair I did have tube ducted vents direct to the rotors but when I switched to the Tarrett sway bars we found it kept getting crushed so eventually removed that. So, yes, there is definitely scope for improved cooling as well.
 
Thanks Patrick for the vid link, was fun watching that. That evo was seriously hanging it out there, not surprising he eventually spun off.
 
Quite a lot of progress has been made but mostly connecting sensors and hardware. Front and rear brake pressure sensors, steering angle sensor, water, fuel, trans temp sensors. Wheel speed sensors. Moved the rear brake line inside the car. Hard fuel lines inside the car. ECU & CDI now mounted. Coils mounted. Steering wheel with scroll buttons done. Control panel moved between gearshift and dash. Not a heap of pics but just a few to show the quality of the workmanship these guys are producing. I'm very happy with it. There's been a lot more work than I anticipated but the light is visible at the end of the tunnel. With any luck it will be off to the tuner within the next 2 weeks. It will be interesting to see what different results we get with the same motor. In the past we had 302whp at 22psi on the local dyno known as 'The Heartbreaker'. I'm hoping to pick up another 30whp give or take, now that we have ign control.

Superb work! Is that an extra oil tank for the gearbox underneath it? What is it for? I still can't figure out what the steering angle sensor is for..
 
Thom, do you mean the black square thing mounted on the back of the trans? If so, it's actually just a mount. For the trans oil pump on one side and the filter on the other. As for the steering angle sensor and all the other sensors, I too am a little flummoxed and slightly anxious about all this extra data that I'll have at my fingertips. Here's a basic outline as described by someone else: Steering angle sensor is excellent for analysing data. Can be used to help in diganosing under and oversteer conditions and the causes of it. Can be used to identify and help driver steering behaviour issues, typically things like argressive steering or getting on the throttle to early on corner exit. Can make it easy to tell if you got off the throttle becuase you were trying to control oversteer or encountered traffic ect. Make sure you group your data when you view it so its not confusing. Basic group it into major categories most commonly used. Driver - G forces, Throttle Position, Steering Angle, Brake Pressure, Time gained/lost, Wheel speed, Gear, Clutch position Engine - RPM, Oil Pressure, Water Temp, Oil Temp, Lambda, Inlet temp, Boost, Coolant Pressure Damper - Position and velocity , temperature Driveline - Diff temp, Gearbox Temp, Power Steer Temp FWIW the driver needs to get out of the car after the session, have a drink, get out of his suit and then before he does anything else write down what the car is and isnt doing well and what points on the circut the car is good and bad. The driver needs to do this without thinking about what was causing the probem or what changes need to be made. Then the race "engineer" (which could be the driver) can sit down with the list and the data and look for the cause (car or driver) and solution to the issue.
 
And I thought I was beginning to be a bit geeky going through the shedload of engine parameters already recorded by my ECU. I suppose I should look at my sandcastles from a different viewpoint now. Haha. Congratulations for having the courage to go through setting up all this - it sounds like a fair amount of tuning stands ahead, but it should return rewarding results!
 
Yes the datalogging represents a big mountain yet to be climbed and I'm not convinced that these roller blades that I'm wearing are suitable. That is to say, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed in regards to deciphering Squiggly lines...but I will do what I can and get some good support. The object of all this is to extract the most out of me and the car. The guys doing the engineering on this car work with Supercar V8s and other high level racers down here. The builder is an ex Racer who was a National Karting champion so I can learn a heap from these guys. Besides which, I'm not religious nor believe in reincarnation...so this life seems to be the only one we've got and I want to push myself in a discipline that I've always enjoyed. Pity it's all too late to make anything of it. [:D]

Well, I don't think there are many 944 enthusiasts who have the opportunity (will/money/whatever) to push their car project this far, and I would feel quite satisifed to have gone this far already.
 
A few more pics since the last update. The car is just about ready to head off to the dyno for mapping. Unfortunately I thought that was going to be this week followed by 2 test days and a club event next week so I was getting very excited....but the dyno guy can't get to the car until at least the 13th of March...so I'm a little deflated after that news today. Anyway, the interior is pretty much done. The final wiring is being worked on today/tomorrow so it will be much tidier than in the pic. The dash was sent away to a great local trimmer who did it in Black suede with some nice stitching. Even got the old fashioned '8-Ball' shifter knob. Done as a bit of a joke but it's actually very functional so it will stay for now. The naca duct in the LH rear 1/4 window allows ducting to the rear mounted fan and trans oil cooler. The surge tank and associated filters, pumps and Ethanol sensor turned out very nicely. Pity to have to cover it up. Might have an idea for that... Great to see the car again with doors and windows. I'm basically very pleased with it although there are just a couple of panel gaps I hope we can improve upon but it is a track car so they're seldom perfect. Of course the rear wing will take some attention from the rest of the car. We're just figuring out where/how to best mount it. Been in discussion with the designer Simon McBeath (one of yours :) ) who is assisting us with advice. Extremely nice guy who has no air and graces. Can't say enough good things about his character. Just hope the wing is as good. [:D]

Very nice, that'll scare people out of your way! Have you used the driving lamp holes for for cooling? Its hard to tell from the pics.
 
Yes, well sort of. [&:] The RH one leads directly to the 993 oil cooler. Not sure what we're going to do quite yet about brake cooling so they will probably be utilised as well.

Thanks guys. Much of my early education was drawn from this forum so I owe thanks to many of you. Hopefully I can repay you with some fun videos in the not too distant future. :)
