952 trackcar update.

Hi All Long time between posts on this particular car...and now it's completely different again! Some of you may know that the latest version shown in this thread met a very early and unfortunate demise when out on the first real shakedown day. I came off the track on the fastest corner and took a high speed journey across the wet grass and gravel, into the tyre wall. Luckily in some regards the damage was essentially taken down the left side of the car and very little elsewhere. Very briefly, the accident occurred due to not having enough suspension travel and the inside rear wheel/tyre would lift off the ground completely. Not what you want at over 100mph through a fast and slightly bumpy corner. So the long journey started back to repairing the car and making it better. We have managed to do that and created something quite different yet again. I call it version 4 (v4) as it's the latest incarnation of what was once a stock 1986 220bhp 944 turbo. As time progressed we decided to build it up to compete in the Time Attack formats. As we have the largest event in the world down here it was exciting to think we might be able to build something a bit different to what this very Japanese centric field and crowd is used to. We have only just completed the car to the point that we did the first shakedown this week. It went quite a bit better than expected and recorded a very competitive time on this particular test track. So much so that the 'word' got out and it's created a bit of a stir in that community. A few pleasing aspects from the first shakedown was that ordinarily these days are punctuated by a lot of work in the pits as much as driving on the track. Hardly a spanner was touched on the day. The other aspect was that our times were on medium compound R specs which we've decided were running too much camber and we had the boost turned down from 1.5 bar (505whp) to 1.3 bar. So there is more to come for sure. So I'm sure it's looks might not be to some people's tastes and I accept that. Form is following function in this regard and I'm happy with the outcome. Hope some of you like it at least. [:D] Don't have a lot of video yet but here's a few short ones to get an idea. Select the highest format when viewing. Apologies for the shaky hand held out of car action video. It was quite blowy and I'm certainly no expert in videoing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2Fclwp18GI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCXkgI7VPsc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouwNVSj0EVc

Patrick, looking superb. Is your roof vent a stock item or something you fabricated? I'm after one for my rally build.

There's a 952 under there somewhere [;)] Looks like no other 944 on earth and I'm sure it goes like no other either Pat, I also love the sound on the video. Time Attack only has one car on track at a time is that right? Which is just as well or all those little aero wings at the front wouldn't last long in wheel to wheel racing. That thing must have so much grip [8D]. WHat size are the wheels and tyres?

Thanks Mark. You never know...[:D] Actually I'm very fortunate in that the builder of the car is also an ex National Kart champion who went to the World titles when he was younger. He's co driving the car with me and helps a lot in the setup. He's also faster than me and was incredibly fast out of the box. He was not far off the Supercar V8 lap times in the first 10 laps ever done in this car. Small, tight track notwithstanding. Benjj...this is pretty much the same bit of kit. I think I actually bought it out of the UK. We didn't fit it for a little while and it warped a bit, but was ok once fitted. http://www.rallysportmag.com.au/home/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=362&category_id=44&option=com_phpshop&Itemid=133

Wow [:D]. You really have gone and done it now Pat. Sounds like something from another planet as well as looking like it [8D]. ...and only an Aussie could do Mad Max on a car and keep it looking subzero cool [;)]

Thanks Patrick, looks like a good bit of kit. Not cheap though!

Paul, while not wheel to wheel, there are few cars on the track at the same time. Certainly not or shouldn't be impeding though. It's basically like 2 days of qualifying. I suppose if they're good enough for DTM racing they should last somewhat. The ones on our car are pretty solidly mounted. I cannot fathom the amount of money it must take to race door to door competitively in some classes. Beyond my means. That's why I hope to get the car to a point where it is reliable and we can turn up and drive without too many concerns. Currently the motor is actually pretty unstressed at 450-505hp to the wheels. It weighs 2500lbs with fuel. We've actually reduced weight by about 130lbs and that's after adding the AirJacks, dry sump system, wing/mounts/sub-structure, and quite heavy splitter with very solid mounts. Also a completely custom ducted cooling system as shown. So by taking weight out from other areas it is very satisfactory to be lighter than when we started. Neil, yes a few people have commented on the Mad Max connection. Most others seem to mention Darth Vader. We've nicknamed it Vader for the moment. [:)] Benj I think we bought it a bit cheaper out of the UK so I'd shop around if that's what you're after. Thanks Darryl.

Pat thats mental. Im glad to see that the car has been repaired but thinking about what you have spent makes me wince. On a separate note, Id be very interested in seeing the intercooler exhaust detail. Id actually be very inteested in seeing everything in detail, but the vent particularly interests me.

Thanks guys. It's been a long journey as you can imagine. It's going to be fun competing in a field of 99.9% Japanese cars. Very fast Japanese cars I might add. http://www.worldtimeattack.com/ There will be cars from the UK, USA, Europe, Japan, NZ and here. The fastest will lap in under 1:25 seconds on R spec rubber. A well driven 997 Cup does it in 1:30 -1:31 by comparison...on slicks! Here's another short video that you might find amusing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tO_fm-RKvw

Thanks Pat. It looks so standard around the front panels (with regard to fit and finish) that it hadn't occurred to me that it wouldn't have the original panels underneath too.
