968 Club Sport at long last

Well as you guys know from the other thread I've finally bit the bullet and bought one. Sorry Glenn you need to be quicker off the mark m8 [;)]

The Story:

I went down first thing Saturday after numerous secretive emails with Phil last week (again apologies Glenn but alls fair in love and second hand Porsches [;)]).
I'd already discussed money before going as its 150 miles each way so didn't want to waste any time, Phil had said he'd had some silly offers but would negotiate a little.

Its in pretty good nick for a K plate with 222000Km on the clock, It has loads of history and came into the UK last year with full Porsche history. Since then Phil has had the belts etc done and a service plus a new flywheel & clutch. Paint and body is perfect, the interior needs a little tidying but not much only slight cosmetic fiddling and a radio. There were no nasty noises from box or engine, infact the engine was exceptionally quiet not a hint of any rattles or chain noise, It drove very well indeed suspension & steering felt tight with no drama when cornering and no excessive rebound so I assume the shocks are sound. Brakes were sharp, although the front calipers look a little tatty and the rear discs are slightly scored. All electrics worked as they should so did the A/C which has just been recharged.

Now the Problems (minor so don't panic) when we went out we got to a nice long straight and just as I was about to floor it, the drivers windscreen wiper stopped !!! Phil was gutted, we had a look when we got back and it looked like the arm had come lose so he has promised to sort it before I collect her at the weekend had a good laugh about that.
The rear tyres are nearly gone probably about 2-3000 miles left on them, so that'll be the first big bill. The tail pipe was rather rusty so I can see that going in a few months and finally and until I can get at it properly, there is a hint of an oily film on the cam belt covers, couldn't really tell whether its a seal or if it a bit of vapour deposit, I'll need to get my spanners out to investigate that further as I don't want that getting on the belts.

Thanks for all your advise chaps along with some tips from a friend of a friend whos had 968s I think I managed to give the car a pretty good shake down. This friend also happens to have a harness bar for a 968 so looks like the 1st modification is sorted [;)]

Finally just for the record I didn't find the CS too harsh at all, compared to some motors I've driven I found the ride quite reasonable even on the back lanes, although I like it hard and fast a bit like my women [:D] (If only it were true [;)])

Cheers from a very happy Mike[8D]

Congratulations Mike, that's the dog's danglies. With the belts, clutch and flywheel done recently, 8 grand is an absolute steal!!!

Now comes the hardest part - the wait!

Well done Mike, 8 grand seems a pretty good deal to me too, even if it is a lhd car with a few miles under its belt. Just think, you paid ÂŁ4,750 less than I did for my rhd coupe. That buys an awful lot of new tyres and catch-up servicing (or half an MG!)

I know you have read all the stuff about 968s by now, so you probably don't need reminding, but if I were you I would lift the cam box cover and check the condition of the chain, sliders and cam teeth before you give it any serious stick.

BTW, what are those things on the "parcel shelf"? are they speakers? ... if so I'd be mighty tempted to bin them, as they do the interior no favours.

Hope the next 7 days pass without you biting your fingernails to the quick!

John,

you read my mind, first job on the list after polishing it [:D] is going to be to whip of the top to make sure it has been done properly, I've even dug out an old dentists mirror to check out the lower tensioner pad, hows that for keen.

Agree about those dodgy speakers they'll get in the way when I'm doing the shopping at Tescos ................NOT.

7 Days !!! no its only 6 now [:D] and counting the minutes, I've got to sort out how I'm going to get there yet ?

Mike,

You have been such a good contributor to this forum, that I'd be happy to offer you a lift on the big day ... just a pity I happen to live in Scotland. []

Any other volunteers? [8D]

Don't worry about me Mike, Im still after James' car. But with a brand new Caterham R300 and new Buell motorbike in the garage, Im busy trying to run my other toys in! So long as I find something by the spring/summer I'll be happy[:D].

Looks a geat car Mike, Congrats on the purchase.

Where to and from and when do you need this lift?

Glenn I knew you'd understand, cheers matey & have fun with that R300 nice machine.

Paul, its a fair trip Shrewsbury in Shropshire down to Reading about 150 odd miles I'll probably have a look at the train times as its probably easier than messing around trying to meet up with someone and covering their fuel/time etc...

Thanks to the rest of you for your comments and I'm glad you approve of the colour it was my first choice although I'm very partial to black, something to do with watching too much Knight Rider as a pimpley youth [;)]

5 days to go [:D]
