Another Cayman

Who knows Andrew, I have the luxury of running both for a while to see which one I'll least regret selling. Strong bond with the GT4 and could add some stuff, we'll see how I get on with the wind in my hair (if I had any that is)

The GTS arrived shiny in the sun..

...but I just drove it the short distance onto promenade in town and had the traditional seagull welcome!

Anyway off to visit the detailer tomorrow - I did clean it off though. I am also having the brake pads checked tomorrow to be sure there is >50% pad remaining.

The scruffy wheel centres had been replaced, the wheel scratches corrected (before picture below) and the tyres are 4Q 2023 manufacture so hats off to Leeds Centre.

Yesterday was the first GT4 track day of the year at Thruxton, damp to start then dried quickly. I have replaced the worn PFC pads with OEM ones I had in stock. Quite a different feel on the brake pedal, it does stop but needs a firmer first push.

Bit of an update.

I had the GTS Boxster ceramic coated and cleaning is so much easier, particularly as it sits outside. I have a CTEK lead going out under the garage door with an outside waterproof junction box covering the cable extension connections. I took it on a Goodwood track day and it went quite well, especially the PCCBs then straight up to Centre Gravity who found and corrected the normal poor ex-factory alignment.

I think it found a friend..

I had to cancel a Spa day because I tweaked my back a couple of days before the event so hope to use the booking next year.

At a recent Goodwood day the GT4 brakes (new OEM pads) started to judder slightly when braking for Woodcote and then again at Brands up into Druids producing a great deal of brake dust. Not knowing whether it was discs or pads, absent any visual clues and with number of track days booked for July and August I had new PFC front discs and pads fitted and at Thruxton on Monday, braking was back to normal. I could have just fitted new discs to the old hats but time and risk with upcoming track days pushed to replace the assembly.

This Bristol Le Mans recreation (I had a Dinky toy model of this back in the day) was running at Thruxton on Monday.

It is based on a 405 chassis with a 6 cylinder 328 derived engine and goes well from my passenger ride perspective. We then went round in the GT4 which of course is so much easier to drive, especially with fancy coloured wheels.

I’ll be on a Silverstone day on Monday but plan on staying overnight and dropping in on Tuesday’s Club trackday to say hello.

Nice one Ralph, sounds like you're enjoying the cars

I'll be on track at Silverstone on Tuesday with Mrs Twinfan, so may well see you to say hello :)

Good to meet you yesterday, Ralph - sorry it was only a brief chat :)

Hope you had a decent morning and a good drive home (y)

And we move on....

the Boxster GTS 4.0L was sold a few weeks ago.

I'll be at the Silverstone Festival Friday and Saturday with the GT4. This year with the Silverstone Racing Club by the Medical Centre. I hope the rain stays away and it can remain shiny particularly for our parade lap Friday lunchtime.

This will be its last trip out with me as it is now for sale to make room for a Spyder RS which should arrive late November in Shark Blue with Neodyme wheels (I'm in a blue and gold phase at the moment ..)

If anyone wants details of the GT4 please PM me.

Congrats Ralph.

Seems like the perfect consolidation car… the big engine, mid engine layout, adjustable chassis and you can take the roof down.
Enjoy in good health.

Thanks, although I may need lessons on the top down bit!

At my age I need to stop doing track days sometime and getting a car that is not a track car but is "as mad as a box of frogs" and which lets me stop tracking on my own terms feels right.

When I posted sometime ago that I was selling the GT3 for a GT4, my overall comment on that car was "did I mention the engine". I'm really keen to get back in a car with that masterpiece.

A good call Ralph. The best of 3-worlds … BGTS, GT4 and GT3 in one package! Not sure about the practicality of that ragtop though.🤔

Hope the delivery goes smoothly.

Jeff

PS: Blue with gold wheels is a great combination. I wish I could find that photo of my Clio Williams 3!

That’s it Ralph. Monaco Blue, which was a nicer, lighter shade of blue than that used for the Williams 1 and 2. A better spec too, including a sunroof and radio!

Originally it was my company car, but I had it for about 13-years in total. Fantastic little car, and definitely my favourite hot hatch, but was succumbing to the dreaded tin worm in the sills and those bulging rear wings [common problems], though it’s now on SORN, so very pleased to hear that it’s survived. Would be interesting to know where it is and in what condition.

Congrats on the RS Ralph. Put your spec up if you have it.

The configuration:

I tend to focus on the exterior colour and wheels and then extras that provide me with practical driving benefits. The colours are a personal choice and I am partially colour blind so prefer bright colours. The standard and optional pallette choices IMHO are not great, the launch colour Vanadium is elegant in bright sunlight but otherwise a bit ‘meh’ Some go well with an unpainted carbon frunk and others don’t, a partial painted frunk is available but again some colours work with it, others not so much. PTS is a lot of money to get a colour I can’t see in the flesh before buying.

I started with Shark Blue which was for me the best non-PTS colour. Neither the Weissach partially nor unpainted frunks work with SB (too much black/dark trim on the base car IMHO) so spending >£9k for an option where the most striking visual aspect would be missing and a furry (Race Tex) covered dash was not attractive, so no Weissach pack for me. Maybe for a next owner but this is not for them.

Wheel colour was either Satin Aluminium (the brighter of the two “silvers”) or Neodyme, I chose the latter which is subtler than Aurum and looks better on real cars (v rendered images). Do I need mag wheels? No, not on todays roads.

I prefer a lighter interior so Arctic Grey rather than Red. Years ago I had a GT Silver Boxster S with a full Carrera Red leather interior which was certainly bright and wonderful but I am a grown-up now.

I have never specified a leather covered steering column casing before but decided to treat myself to one decorative bit.

Other stuff, front lift as there have been times with the GT4 (running lower than stock) I would have benefitted from having it and I did find it useful on my old GT3. LED lights but now lack auto dipping, LWB, chrono, white main dials, standard carbon interior trim, light design, smoking pack (12v socket) and the FREE footwell net. I added Bose simply because I hope to listen to music over the car noise and need more power than stock audio. Decals deleted as colour choices do not work with SB but I am proud to have “Porsche” badge in Silver on the rear.

I’ll get Neodyme OEM style model name door and rear PU decals from Highgate House and it'll have full PPF and ceramic coating after whatever prep is required. Not sure about tyres, I have a spare set of MPSP4S tyres so I might put those on. I’ll take it up to Centre Gravity once it has 1k miles to have a fast road set-up.

It should arrive mid/end November so a likely first trip to Thruxton just for a noise test (my JCR noise reduction tips fit) to see whether I think I can run on Goodwood 98dB or 105dB days, I’d like to do a couple of Goodwood GRRC days in the summer. I have a credit to use after a cancelled Spa day earlier this year so might see if next year’s event coincides with the Techno-Classica Essen trip in April.

The focus is on touring/attending events rather than track days but I do like the GRRC days at Goodwood and a drive at Spa would be great. As for miles, I am uncertain on insuring annual 5k or 7.5k miles, I have found the lower mileage a bit limiting in the past so I'll probably try to max the depreciation with use - top down of course. 😎

very nice, I hope you can live with that top, that noise and less torques lower down . GTS 4.0 Boxster is a great car and a hard act to follow. As I own the GTS 4.0 Cayman and 4RS I do find you have to ring the neck out of the 4RS as the torques up at 6750 rpm ! the GTS is nicer to drive on the roads and just feels faster lower in the revs. So much so I never drive the 4RS on the roads it's just a toy.
You have to drive these new RS cars like a mad man. I prob end up with just a normal PDK 718 Spyder with a remap next year as my long termer when the GTS and 4RS get moved on. Not sure I could live with a SRS myself.

You won't need exhaust tips, you WILL need ear plugs lol.
