Another Cayman

Thread back on line with all the history (y)

The car had the dreaded transmission mount failure and got fixed after two months, luckily it failed mid-September on the last track day of the year. After the warranty replacement, we were up at Center Gravity on the last day before Xmas to have the alignment changed. The OPC had somehow managed to put everything back as CG had set it up.

Set up history; the first set up was too low, causing the car to hit the bump stops and the issues at speed on a rough section of the autobahn noted in Post #172. The second set up raised the ride height but the car was now moving uncomfortably over undulating surfaces and front/rear balance needed improvement.

This visit, CG tested the dampers on their "wobbly" machine and they all were performing consistently which confirmed the too high ride height theory. With the ride height taken down to the previous manual GT4's levels, the settings are now 2:34 front and 2:01 rear camber with total toe of 0:04 and 0:28 front and rear respectively. Cross weights with driver are within 4kg. Movement on undulating surfaces are more controlled and hopefully will be good on track at Thruxton in late March.

The car is approaching two years old so service arranged early March. Since September I have been taking the car out every 4/5 weeks to run with everything at normal temperatures to try avoid the battery issue that lost the first two track days last year.

I bought a spare set of black fully refurbished wheels from 9Apart and will be having them tarted up in Aurum and will put MPS4S on one set and fresh Cup2s on the other. I have one set of used front and rear Cup2s with c4/5mm tread that I ran in 2022 and on the car, a set I bought last year. I also discovered a pair of unused front 245/35 Cup2s I'd bought and stored in my daughter's garage so happily I only need to buy the MPS4S and two rear Cup2s.

If anyone wants a set of used Cup2s let me know by PM (I will have sorted out tyres by mid-March) but you'll need to arrange transport unless you can collect from Exeter area.

I'm off to Techno-Classica Essen in April with a Javelin track day at Spa on the way back and I've booked July Nordschleife Sports Driver two day training operated by the circuit. It is quite a large event, attached is a picture of some of the cars from August 2019 lined up on the Döttinger Höhe.

Insurance is falling due the end of January and again the issue is mileage limit of 7,500 miles, do I cancel the track & road policy when near the limit and buy another year or....

Finally I've discovered photos hosted on postimages.org are rejected as not an approved source, another issue for the Forum issues thread....

Insurance this year with ClassicLine was £1,605 for 7,500 miles, no commuting (hope we sell the company soon!) and 6 'free' UK track days cover with £56 each additional UK trackday. Last year same cover was £1,465 so modest increase compared to others' experience. Declared mods were PPF, exhaust tips, disks and pads, and rear TCAs - easy to be honest with ClassicLine.

Two year service early March (£1,200) then a wash and brush up at detailer followed by PU and undertrays off for cleaning and spraying before Thruxton late March. Hopefully the battery won't fail this year and dump me on the A303 again.

Mine is due in March. Last time I asked (6 months ago) it was £850.

However, knowing my luck, it'll be the same £1200 when it comes to it. I ask them not to top up the washer fluid and I don't need the top up oil so there's about £30 saving.

Dan,

Whilst there may be a GT tax, the total of £1,200 includes clearing drains £99, plus 3 not separately priced and unrequired items; top up oil and bag, window cleaner, and tyre sealant. As I don't have a tyre sealant pump, I have 4 unused bottles of window cleaner in the garage, and gallons of oil so some savings there.

As it will subsequently be going to a local indy for various fettling including removing front PU to clean out detritis they might as well do the drains.

Thanks for prompting me to pay attention (y)

I agree with Dan, Ralph. I think you're overpaying at £1200 for the 2yr service. I know prices have gone up in the last 2 years but I paid not far off half that.

For comparison, my 4yr service is booked for early March and I'm going to be paying a similar price to what you've been quoted for your 2yr and mine includes spark plugs/drains/aircon service but no brake fluid as it was done late last year.

This is at my OPC.

my 4 year was £1.6k, you might be in for a shock on prices and I got 10% off.

It was booked in via the Service Manager last week and the price given as a quote at the time. There won't be any surprises :) I also know another GT4 owner who paid a similar price late last year.

As Dan says above, it's worth shopping around if you don't have a good relationship with an OPC.

Ralph, yours should be nearer £1k unless prices has gone up since July.

Clearing of drains was always included in the quote for me, never saw it as a separate line item - whether under the old Fixed Price scheme or subsequently. The comprehensive paperwork - checklists accompanying the invoice detailed the work

Screen-wash - I have found that the Porsche supplied product is excellent and out-performs anything else that I have used - NB the dilution instructions if `value` is in question ;)

Well what a difference 6 months can make Ralph.

Just done some phoning around to get a service price for the GTS and the cheapest so far is Chester at £1070 with PCGB discount and they include the 1ltr oil top up for free (so they say). Just waiting for my OPC, preston, to return my email.

I feel March could be an expensive month

An update, service was £980 in the end. I've bought a set of spare wheels and am having them redone in Aurum and fitted with Cup2 tyres. The original wheels are being fitted with MPS4S tyres for wet track days.

The 2 Year service noted pad and rear disc wear so presently being fitted with new pads all round and rear discs. The front disks are PFC and show surface cracking but PFC advise not an issue unless cracks get close to centre vanes.

And just for a little more interest I've bought a 4.0L Boxster GTS in Python Green to run alongside the GT4. The GTS will be mostly for touring and has ceramic discs so something else to worry about.

Very nice, is that the one from Leeds? I’m in a python green porsche group that another PCGB member has set up, mainly GT4’s but also GT3, GTS and a Macan now, if interested in that let me know and can see about getting you added to the whatsapp group.

Hi, I'm not a wotsup subscriber but many thanks for the thought.

The car should be shipped down in a week's time and it will then go off to be properly cleaned and mopped, have a bit more ppf and have ceramic coating applied. I'll have the brake pads checked and maybe just replace them as I will be taking it on a couple of track days.
