Lost the last half hour of the day because the car seemed a little hot and either the Motec or the engine seemed to be "tinkling" a tad and it wouldn't pull smoothly through 4000rpm in 4th ... so I'll ask Colin to take a look at it.
Chris, I was thinking about your hot running on the way home. On reflection mine gets no where near as hot - only half way up on a really hot track day. I'm sure Colin will sort it but have you tried the 'hot wing test'? If all is working correctly your front right wing should be warm. If it's cold then the thermostat is not opening. If it's boiling hot there might be a problem with your oil cooler fan.
Steve, thanks for this.
I'll mention it to them ---, I am guessing that maybe the thermostat is cutting in a little late. I'll try the hot wing test --- I guess this also works when the car is just ticking over !
I'm trying to visualize someone strapped to the wing doing the test while you're steaming round Donny! [][] But in all seriousness, it's ideally done after a drive of around 20 minutes as that's about the time the thermostat should have opened.

Chris, I've got some video of a couple of laps behind you - I'll put it up on youtube soon.
Thanks Ian ---- I'm happy to share the gory detail. And all advice tried, within reason .... !!

Just a couple of notes you may like to try next time (IMNVHO[]), (but I'd be interested on SE's comments!!):-
- Apex the left hander at the and of Craner but let the car move out to about two thirds of the way across the track then bring it back diagonally to the turn in for Old Hairpin -you can still brake in a straight line for OH but it means u can carry a bit more speed from Craner;
- Ignore the second apex at Coppice (that's for bikes!) and let the car move out -you can straighten up earlier and get the power down sooner-you gain a few extra mph at the end of the straight.

The instructor really helped with fine adjustments, and he got me going through the bottom of Craner curves and round the old hairpin a lot quicker by keeping me in fourth (remember it is not geared like an RS ) and carrying more speed through the corner and using more of the road - great fun on 205/60X15.
I did manage to catch and pass some of the 993 and 996 cars, so it isn't always sheer cubic inches that matter
Had a great run in Jason's car though, and that really opened my eyes to how good the 964RS is - shame I didn't go for one I was offered at £25K about 5 years ago, as they are now just too expensive :-(

Melv, you are spot on.
Took some instruction once things were getting scrappy and it seemed so obvious once Mike Wild did it.
He was travelling faster cooling the car down than I was warming it up !
And the problem ? A broken second distributor belt.
There's a lesson in that too !!!
Thankfully no damage done, and 9M found me a extra 50 horses -- at least ?

Ian, incredibly useful, thankyou.
I am braking too early and not hard enough.
Yep, short and sharp -prolongs pad and disc life too!!
And just goes to prove how a little spent on instruction will improve your car far more than thousands spent on mods.....[&:][]
