Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

Interesting you think PDK will be in high demand. I would have guessed a manual would be the preferred transmission for a Spyder. I can see a PDK GTS being a sensible choice. Still, what do I know? The whole car buying scene is pretty wacky right now.

I was convinced I wanted PDK (and ordered that on the Boxster 4.0). All three of our cars are PDK or auto - haven't had a manual since the 996.2 GT3.

Then took a test drive in the OPC's Cayman 4.0 manual, and rather liked it - downshift blipping, active throttle around idle, didn't mind the long gearing as not looking for a race car.

So now, happy to take a Boxster 4.0 or Spyder in manual. Not happy about gouging over list price as that will be only temporary till next model announced and delivered.

Anyway, first step is the lovely 981 GTS shortly coming from OPC Bolton, then when my finances are clearer, will look at the next step.

I could not order a Boxster 4.0 GTS, so gave up bought a Z4 and it's far better then expected. Nice gearing and a much better roof, and idrive 7 is great. Happy bunny and was 1/2 the price. Really nice to goto BMW and they want to sell you a car :). As for new cars dropping, with no new cars till 2023 then I would say 718 Spyders esp PDK cars will be high for another 18 months at least.
Since you disappeared from another forum i wondered what you had bought, like you I wanted a 718spyder with no chance so a few months ago I decided to visit my now local opc which I never have used before since relocating and was able to order a boxster gts now we all know this is not written in stone until you get a comm. number but my silverstone invite came through recently so fingers crossed although I am not a 100% sure it’s the car I want with the 718 Spyder on the back of my mind.

Not sure I would buy any BMW though but I love the idrive in our daily JCW which is basically a BMW I suppose!

IMHO prices are already softening on the over inflated secondhand Porsche market further so when production gets ramped up at the end of month.

Well I went PDK and love it.

If I want manual I select manual!

Then I can scream every gear to 8000rpm if I so desire

or I can let the PDK worry about the gears and I just worry about the slow and fast pedal and keeping on the black stuff.

Zero regrets.

As for BMW yes they are nice but don't expect it to be worth much in 2 or 3 years.

My friend just sold his 2018 M4 30K on the clock for £38,000 cost £75,000 [:-]

However if you are enjoying it then none of that matters

I still have 2 porkers so all's good. Still loving the Z4 for daily use and the torque is amazing on the 3l Turbo unit.

Also have the Lotus Emira on order, but 987.2 Spyder Still lives on. BMW is a steel imo £20k off list and very rare cars. Doubt it will loose any money, no one pays retails but every one quote rrp prices when they talk about values. Porsche have lost me as a client they suck money arse. And nothing new excites from them anyway.

well at least you still have one of Porsche’s finest wish I still had mine as still not sure on the BGTS 4.0 but finding good quality back catalogue cars ie 9x7.2 is getting harder and expensive so a new BGTS at c£75k looks good value

Having previously had both a 987 then a 981 Spyder, both of which have been missed, I decided it was time to return to the fold. For me personally it had to be the 987 to now keep long term, it just has that extra bit or character, nicer steering, less annoying roof design re boot opening, and a few other things, all IMO of course.

Now for the spec, purists should really look away now !!

It's pretty much the full heavyweight version with PDK, sports heated seats, full leather, and nav, - it does have the right wheels though. Other options include sports chrono, dials in white, seat backs and roll bars in white, plus the all important sports exhaust. Mileage around 15k, with 3 previous owners, and fairly immaculate really.

It's my perfect spec going into older-ish age now with keeping it long term in mind. The transmission wasn't the decider but I quite like PDK, I have other cars with buckets, a bit less keen on them now than I used to be anyway, and the missus likes heated seats.

So there you have it my perfect Spyder, probably the heaviest and in many eyes the least driver focused spec around, but I love it and really just don't care :)

I have owned a 987 Manual a 987 PDK and currently a 981

Each model is a winner IMO and for different reasons but for me the updated interior, 3.8l 380bhp engine with sound track to match has made it my preferred version to date

There are finally enough "youtubers" and actual owners of both 981 and now 718 who have confirmed what I found the 981 version was more user friendly ride wise on the road and sound tone and volume compared to the latest 718 which is definitely far more track day focused than any previous versions but somewhat lacks in character compared to the previous more polluting versions when it comes to normal day to day adventures

I no longer do tracks days and I thoroughly enjoy the factory sound track from the 981 so the £25k to switch to the track biased version made no sense to me especially as you then have to part with thick end of £5k for an exhaust change and £300 for a valve controller to get around the new factory silence even with PSE "ON" between 2k-4500 rpm where one spends most of their time driving compared to 5-8k rpm when the valves open but I found the actual high speed in any gear, wind and tyre noise reached all negate what little sound and volume the factory PSE finally unleashes [&:]

Sandy you might have the heaviest but certainly not the least driver focused according to my experience having driven on my 987 PEC session the lightest spec possible for the first half of the session to the heaviest spec possible as the car didn't even have the Spyder lightweight alloys! and I couldn't tell the difference on track at all. My instructor that day said with all this skills and track knowledge neither he or any of his colleagues could get around the PEC more than milliseconds quicker in the very lightweight car I had driven earlier So my experience on track was totally understandable to him as I was way off the max either car could deliver compared to the hands of a professional

Enjoy your preferred Spyder version especially as the so called summer doesn't have long left to run in 2021 [8D]

Its a good job we are a bit different, or we would all be chasing the same specification! The 987 Spyder looks the sweetest design in my eyes with slightly better proportions than the 981 which has a bit too much metal aft of the door. However, I would gladly put up with that for the 3.8 motor.

They are all a bit special in all guises, but my preference is with a manual g/box. I don't have a/c and don't miss it. Its an open top car, and if too sunny the top can go on with the back window left off. I would have PCCB though, as I had them on a 981GTS and noticed the benefit on todays roads with reduced unsprung weight. I think they would be great on a Spyder. Not many around with that spec though!

Every model is a winner does some it up pretty well I think, and as mentioned it's good that everyone has their own individual preferences for sure.

I was going to ask if any of the previous owners might be around on here, reg no is LA11 TYP, it came with a few concours awards - at least one from PCGB ??

I just spotted your "White Seats" and concours wins LA11 TYP Guilty as Charged :ROFLMAO:

I owned it until January 2016 4200 dry miles only SOR car went to 911 Virgin who were very strong sellers on Spyder's and it sold within days of being there for the agreed asking price

Excellent thanks for that.

It still looks great with 15k miles on it so will try and keep it that way, although it will be driven as well.

Cheers

Interesting choice as I would have been thinking the more modern technology especially as its one man one engine which is a really nice touch these days but on the other hand a manual shift would also have been preferable to the auto

Real 1st World conundrums :ROFLMAO:

In the meantime as autumn is about to kick in nice to see Brian has been having a last summer fling with the resale racing red Spyder[8D]

I had 'launch colour white' but I have to say 'resale red' and the scarce aqua blue metallic really stood out on the 987 Spyder

Should really give the car a good polish it looks a bit dull in those photos :ROFLMAO: any colour looks good in the 987 but bias a bit for Red ones.

Flat 6 saw a bit on TV off Maurice in Ginetta Juniors at Knockhill sadly had another event to attend ,looked like a packed event as the BTCC brings in the crowds

.thanks to RS for posting the pics

Hi Brian

Yes it was packed at Knockhill and Maurice had great results, getting into the top 10. Here's a summary video of how he enjoyed his weekend there :)

Would be great to take your Spyder around the circuit for a promo video [:)]

I understand that you no longer have the 981. How did you choose which one to part with?
